Bungie’s 220-Role Reduction: What the Studio Said About Its Finances

Bungie said it would eliminate 220 roles in July 2024. Then-CEO Pete Parsons cited expansion, rising development costs and industry pressures; a separate 155 roles were set to move to Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Bungie announced on July 31, 2024, that it would eliminate 220 roles—about 17% of its workforce. Then-CEO Pete Parsons said the studio had been “overly ambitious,” exceeded its financial safety margins and begun “running in the red.” Those are management’s stated explanations, not an independently audited account of Bungie’s finances. The announcement also described two separate organizational changes: about 155 roles moving to Sony Interactive Entertainment and an unnamed game project continuing in a new PlayStation Studios studio.

What Bungie announced

In its July 31, 2024 statement, Bungie said it would eliminate 220 roles, roughly 17% of its studio workforce. The cuts were expected to affect every level of the company, including most executive and senior leader roles. Bungie said affected employees would receive severance, a bonus and health coverage. Bungie’s announcement is the primary source for these figures and terms; contemporaneous coverage appeared in GeekWire and the Los Angeles Times.

Why Parsons said Bungie was cutting jobs

Parsons described a combination of higher development costs, changes in the games industry and broader economic conditions. He also pointed to Bungie’s rapid expansion, an industry downturn, what he called a quality miss with Destiny 2: Lightfall, and the need to give The Final Shape and Marathon enough time to meet players’ expectations.

In the statement, Parsons wrote: “We were overly ambitious, our financial safety margins were subsequently exceeded, and we began running in the red.” He further described how the studio’s 2023 expansion met “a broad economic slowdown” and a sharp games-industry downturn. These statements explain management’s rationale; the announcement did not provide an audited loss figure or quantify how much each factor contributed.

How the 220 cuts differ from the Sony integration

The announced reduction and the Sony move were separate changes. Bungie said approximately 155 roles—about 12%—would be integrated into Sony Interactive Entertainment over the following quarters. Those positions were not described as part of the 220 roles being eliminated. The figures and timing are from Bungie’s July 31, 2024 announcement.

Was Bungie’s new science-fantasy game canceled?

No. Bungie said an incubation project—an action game set in a new science-fantasy universe—would be spun out to form a new studio within PlayStation Studios. The announcement did not name the project. Its stated plan was to continue development under the new studio, not cancel the game.

What Bungie said it would focus on next

Bungie said it would concentrate development on Destiny and Marathon. It reported that more than 850 team members would be building those games after the announced changes. That is the company’s figure from July 31, 2024, not a current headcount.

What the workforce figures do—and do not—show

GeekWire reported that Bungie had more than 1,400 employees before its October 2023 layoffs and around 850 at the July 2024 announcement. Those are the outlet’s reported figures, rather than a new official headcount disclosure in Bungie’s statement. They provide context for the successive reorganizations, but they should not be treated as a precise, independently verified staffing ledger.
