The Burlington Hotel in Bunbury changed hands in 2025 after 33 years with the same family. New owners Fiona Hutchinson and Brendan Craig said they wanted to refresh the heritage-listed venue with more entertainment and renewed accommodation while keeping the character locals know as the “Burly essence.” The plans were reported in February and March 2025; they should not be read as confirmation that every renovation or offering is now in place.
Who owns the Burlington Hotel in Bunbury?
PerthNow reported on 28 February 2025 that Fiona Hutchinson and Brendan Craig had become the Burlington Hotel’s new owners, marking its first change of hands in more than 30 years. Visit Bunbury Geographe later described the transition as following 33 years with the same family. PerthNow’s report and a PubTIC industry report published on 12 March 2025 both named Hutchinson and Craig as the owners.

What did the new owners plan to change?
The owners’ stated aim was to bring new energy and activity to the hotel without discarding its established identity. PerthNow reported plans for live music, varied entertainment, refurbished rooms, reopened bars and new customer offerings. PubTIC described ambitions to promote local and national music acts and strengthen the hotel’s connection with the community and Bunbury’s central business district.
Hutchinson told PerthNow: “The important thing is to retain that Burly essence — we don’t want to take that away, we just want to enhance it.” The emphasis on continuity matters in a venue with a long local history: the reported vision was a refresh, not a claim that the hotel would become an entirely different place.

What is known about the accommodation renovations?
PerthNow said renovations to the upstairs rooms were already underway when it published its report in February 2025. The Visit Bunbury Geographe listing described plans to restore upstairs accommodation and anticipated that it would return in mid-2025. That date was a target in the listing, not confirmation that the work was completed.

Why does the Burlington’s history matter to the plans?
Visit Bunbury Geographe says the hotel first served locals in 1899, during Bunbury’s Gold Boom-era growth. It describes the Burlington as a landmark and gathering place, with a traditional front bar, Bar 51 bar and restaurant, and Indi Bar as a late-night music venue for all ages. PubTIC likewise describes it as one of Bunbury’s remaining Gold Rush pubs and dates its opening to 1899.

The venue’s reported history helps explain why the new owners spoke about retaining its character as they pursued changes. Hutchinson told PubTIC that the hotel held a special place in locals’ hearts and that the owners wanted to honour its history while introducing new experiences. These are the owners’ intentions, rather than evidence that each planned change has been delivered.
