Use this budgeting calculator to estimate what remains after your monthly expenses: monthly income − monthly expenses = money left over. Enter income and spending for the same period, include costs that do not arrive every month, and compare the estimate with what actually happens. A negative result means the expenses entered exceed the income entered.
How to calculate your monthly budget
A budget is a written plan for using income each month, not a guarantee that spending will match the plan. For a household cash-flow estimate, use monthly take-home income and expenses so the figures share the same time period. The basic calculation is:

Money left over = monthly income − monthly expenses

Consumer.gov defines a budget as “a plan you write down to decide how you’ll spend your money each month.” Its Making a Budget guidance recommends gathering bills and pay stubs before starting.
What income and expenses should you include?
Use a consistent income figure
Add income for the same period as your budget. Include all sources that apply, such as pay from multiple jobs, self-employment income, benefits, and support. If you are building a take-home cash-flow plan, use the amounts that reach your household rather than mixing take-home pay with gross salary.

For irregular income, consumer.gov recommends adding income from the previous year and dividing by 12 to estimate a monthly amount. This is an average, not a promise that each month will bring that amount; account for the variation when deciding what you can reliably spend.

Make room for expenses that are not monthly
A budget built only from monthly bills can overstate what is available. Review several months of spending and add categories for costs that arrive less often or vary by season. CFPB examples include insurance, medical and school expenses, support for family, seasonal recreation, gifts, charity, and vacations. A miscellaneous category can help accommodate surprises. See the CFPB’s Assess your spending guidance.
Include savings when it reflects your goals
If you intend to save regularly, include that contribution as a budget item. There is no single required savings percentage in the guidance cited here; choose an amount that fits your circumstances and goals. Consumer.gov’s budget guidance and the CFPB’s spending guidance treat savings as something to plan for, alongside other expenses.

How to read the result
- Above zero: The entered income exceeds the entered expenses by that amount. It is an estimate; compare it with actual spending before treating it as reliably available.
- Zero: The plan assigns all entered income to expenses and savings. There is no calculated remainder.
- Below zero: The entered expenses exceed the income used in the calculation. Review the amounts and categories that could change; the arithmetic identifies a shortfall but does not solve it by itself.
How to check whether the estimate is realistic
- Gather records. Use pay stubs, bills, receipts, and bank or credit-union statements to make the starting figures more complete.
- Track spending as it happens. Record purchases and bills during the month, rather than waiting until the end to reconstruct them.
- Compare actual results with the plan. Check whether the amount predicted to remain is close to what is actually left.
- Revise the figures. Adjust estimates when real costs, income, or circumstances differ, and repeat the comparison each month.
The CFPB’s budgeting guidance describes tracking and reviewing spending as part of making a budget work in practice.
Calculator, spreadsheet, app, or paper worksheet?
The calculation is the same whichever format you use. Choose a method that makes it practical to enter spending and compare the plan with actual results. CFPB and consumer.gov offer worksheets and support manual tracking; a journal, spreadsheet, financial-management app, or bank or credit-union tool are other possible approaches.
