In October 2024, BrucePac expanded a recall of nearly 12 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry after testing linked Listeria contamination to its chicken. Prepared foods sold at Costco, Trader Joe’s, Target and other retailers were among the products reported as affected. A retailer’s name alone does not identify a recalled item: check the exact product and package information against the official recall details. This is a historical recall, not a new announcement in 2026.
What happened in the BrucePac recall?
USDA testing detected Listeria in poultry samples, and follow-up testing identified BrucePac chicken as the source, according to the Associated Press report carried by CBS News. On October 21, 2024, CBS reported that the recall had grown from an initial 75 products to hundreds of prepared foods, including salads and pasta meals. The expanded recall was reported to cover nearly 12 million pounds of meat and poultry.
The affected products were reported as produced from June 19 through October 8, 2024. Because those dates and the associated best-by dates are in the past, the report describes a 2024 event; it does not establish whether any particular product currently on sale is affected.
Which retailers and foods were named?
Contemporaneous reporting named products sold under or associated with Costco, Trader Joe’s, Target, Walmart, Kroger, Aldi, Wegmans, 7-Eleven, Amazon Kitchen, Boston Market and Taylor Farms, among others. Examples included Trader Joe’s Crunchy Slaw and chicken salads, Kroger salad kits, Amazon Kitchen chicken wraps and salads, and Taylor Farms chicken salads. These are examples, not a complete item list.

The retailer or brand does not tell you whether a specific package was recalled. Match the exact product name and label information to the official recall details. CBS reported that USDA had disclosed a 326-page product list and urged consumers to review product and label information. Establishment numbers “51205” or “P-51205” were reported as appearing inside or under the USDA mark of inspection, but downstream processing could result in a different establishment number on a package. Do not use that number alone to decide whether an item is included.
How to check a product
- Identify the item. Record the full product name and brand from the package, not just the store where it was purchased.
- Compare package details. Check the label and any relevant date, lot or establishment information against the official recall entry and label information. The official FSIS item-level list could not be verified here, so this article does not provide a complete product-by-product list.
- When in doubt, do not eat it. If you cannot confidently determine whether a package matches the recall information, contact the retailer or relevant food-safety authority for guidance rather than relying on a retailer name or a single establishment number.
What to do if you have a potentially recalled product
At the time of the recall, officials advised consumers who found recalled products in refrigerators or freezers to throw them away. Do not taste a potentially affected product to check whether it is safe. Freezing is not a remedy: FDA says freezing does not eliminate or reduce Listeria.

Clean food-contact surfaces and sanitize surfaces that may have touched the food or its packaging. FDA recommends keeping refrigerators at 40°F (4°C) or below and freezers at 0°F (-18°C) or below; those temperatures support safe food storage generally but do not make contaminated food safe.
A related Albertsons deli-food recall
Separately, on October 19, 2024, FDA posted an Albertsons recall involving 12 types of ReadyMeals and store-made deli items containing the recalled chicken ingredient. The listed banners included Albertsons, Carrs-Safeway, Eagle, Jewel-Osco, Pavilions, Randalls, Safeway, Shaw’s, Star Market, Tom Thumb and Vons. This was a related downstream recall, distinct from the broader BrucePac recall; verify any item against its own recall notice.
Why Listeria matters
FDA explains that Listeria monocytogenes can survive and grow under refrigeration. Invasive listeriosis can be life-threatening, with higher risk for newborns, adults over 65 and people with weakened immune systems. Infection during pregnancy can also cause severe outcomes. Anyone who suspects they may have listeriosis should consult a healthcare provider.
