His interview is a record of what he said and predicted—not proof that his technology claims came true, that recovery efforts endured, or that disputed legal history was resolved. Later reporting adds a more complicated picture, including local criticism of crypto newcomers and questions about the continuity of some business efforts.
How Pierce described his path from games to cryptocurrency
In a 2018 interview with GamesBeat, Pierce traced his interest in Bitcoin to late 2009 or early 2010, said he focused more seriously on it in 2012, and said he began forming companies by 2013. That chronology is his recollection in the interview. GamesBeat also repeated a then-current Forbes estimate that ranked him ninth in cryptocurrency wealth and put his holdings at about $1 billion. It is a historical estimate, not a current or independently verified measure of his wealth.
Pierce presented his career as a continuation of his earlier work in gaming and online communities. “I live life like it’s a role-playing game,” he said, describing an approach that treated business and personal projects as interconnected experiments. That framing helps explain his interest in games as more than entertainment: he saw them as potential environments for digital ownership, payments, and new forms of economic activity.
What he meant by cryptocurrency games
Pierce argued that blockchain could give games payment systems and decentralized applications that were less dependent on conventional intermediaries. As an example, he described a dice game paired with a wallet, where players could move value through the game. He also argued that lower-friction payments might help games attract users and increase their long-term value. These were arguments and forecasts made in 2018, not demonstrated results.

Why he singled out EOS
Pierce recommended EOS to game developers, contrasting it with what he viewed at the time as Ethereum’s limitations. “The only thing is if I were a game developer right now, I would be looking at building something on EOS,” he told GamesBeat. That is a dated recommendation, not evidence that EOS became the best or prevailing platform for games. His claims about network capacity, user acquisition, and game feasibility should likewise be read as advocacy rather than current technical findings.
Puerto Rico: recovery ambitions and local response
Pierce said he moved to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and described helping with recovery through efforts including Restart and Puerto Crypto events. He also recalled an earlier interest in the island as a possible base for crypto banking. His account presented the move as both an opportunity to contribute and a way to build a community around cryptocurrency.

That account is only one side of the story. A 2022 Washington Post report described local objections to the crypto community, including protests after a conference and criticism that outreach lacked continuity. It reported that Pierce said he donated $8.9 million to island organizations in 2021; the figure is his reported claim, not an audited total established by that coverage. The Post also quoted him describing some early plans as “loose ideas, nothing of which was concrete or well thought out.” A VR start-up founder, Cruz, described departures after a crypto market decline by saying, “A lot of people just disappeared.”
Puerto Rico’s tax policies were part of the broader draw for newcomers, but migration figures should not be mistaken for crypto migration alone. TIME reported that a government-commissioned study counted over 4,500 individuals and businesses relocating under the relevant tax acts, primarily from the U.S. mainland; the study year is not stated in TIME’s passage. TIME also recorded local concerns that island residents do not benefit from capital-gains provisions in the same way as incoming beneficiaries. The figure covers relocations under the acts, not necessarily crypto investors.

What later reporting says about Pierce-linked ventures
In 2024, TechCrunch reported on Pierce-linked business dealings in Puerto Rico that it characterized as ill-fated and short-lived, drawing on broader reporting by The New York Times. This account complicates the image of a durable recovery effort, but it is not a court judgment and does not establish the current status of every project associated with Pierce. The available reporting supports a distinction between announced ambitions, particular reported business outcomes, and the longer-term state of local initiatives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to understand the controversy around his past
GamesBeat’s 2018 interview discussed controversy surrounding Digital Entertainment Network and Marc Collins-Rector. Pierce denied wrongdoing and offered his account of lawsuits and events. The interview records his position; it does not itself establish either guilt or exoneration. Without a complete independent chronology and primary legal records, allegations, denials, and adjudicated findings should not be treated as interchangeable.
