British Airways’ 16 March 2026 winter schedule announcement names two new long-haul destinations from London: Colombo and Melbourne. Other changes include more frequent flights on existing routes, an airport move, seasonal services and short-term extra flights—not 12 new destinations. Colombo is planned as a seasonal direct service from Gatwick; Melbourne is planned as a daily year-round service from Heathrow via Kuala Lumpur.
What new routes has British Airways announced from London?
The airline’s announcement covers its planned winter 2026 schedule and identifies two new long-haul destinations. It also reports a planned nine per cent increase in the number of long-haul flights operated from London compared with winter 2025. That is a flight-count comparison, not a claim about seats, passenger numbers or the number of destinations.
The announcement does not support the headline figure of 12 new routes. The other changes it lists are frequency increases, seasonal services, an airport change, a planned return to service and additional flights added temporarily. British Airways’ broader new routes page includes entries from different dates, so those should not be counted as part of the March winter announcement.
Which new British Airways flights start in winter 2026?
| Destination | London airport and routing | Planned start and frequency | Season and cabins named |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colombo, Sri Lanka | London Gatwick; announced as a direct service | Three flights per week from 23 October 2026. Outbound BA2045 is listed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; return BA2044 begins from Colombo on 24 October. | Seasonal winter service. World Traveller, World Traveller Plus and Club World. |
| Melbourne, Australia | London Heathrow via Kuala Lumpur; one stop, not nonstop | Daily service planned from 9 January 2027. BA33 is listed from Heathrow from 9 January; BA34 from Melbourne from 11 January. | Year-round service. World Traveller, World Traveller Plus, Club World and First. |
These dates, frequencies and cabin details are from British Airways’ 16 March 2026 announcement. The company says the final schedule is subject to scheduling and slot constraints, so the announced timetable is not a guarantee that a flight will operate on every future date.

How do the Colombo and Melbourne options differ?
Colombo is the announced option for a seasonal winter trip from Gatwick on a direct flight, three times a week. Melbourne is planned to operate daily throughout the year from Heathrow, but the flight stops in Kuala Lumpur. The release names First among the Melbourne cabins; it does not list First for Colombo.
For either route, check British Airways’ booking information for your specific travel dates before making plans. The airline said tickets for the new routes and expanded services were on sale through ba.com from 17 March 2026; availability and schedules can vary by date.

Separate short-term flights to Bangkok and Singapore
British Airways said it added seven additional return services to Bangkok and Singapore in the weeks before the announcement to meet short-term demand connected to the situation in the Middle East. The airline reported more than 3,300 extra seats between 10 and 19 March 2026. This was a temporary capacity measure, not a new destination launch or a stated permanent winter frequency.
