British Airways announced on 17 February 2025 that it would acquire Boeing’s London Gatwick hangar facility and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) business. BA later said it had acquired the facility, but the company materials reviewed do not disclose the purchase price or exact legal completion date.
What did British Airways acquire?
The transaction covered Boeing’s Gatwick hangar facility and its MRO business, rather than only the physical building. Boeing’s 2021 description of the operation included maintenance and repair, aircraft modifications, transitions and surveys, as well as hangar and tooling leasing. Boeing also planned to open a 737-800BCF conversion line at Gatwick in 2022. That earlier description establishes the range of activities associated with the asset, but not which Boeing services continued after the acquisition. Boeing’s 2021 announcement
What maintenance work does BA expect Gatwick to handle?
BA said the site would support several parts of its fleet maintenance operation:
- Continue minor maintenance on Boeing 777 aircraft at Gatwick.
- Bring some scheduled heavy maintenance for Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft in-house.
- Expand capacity for unscheduled repairs.
BA said the additional work would strengthen resilience and relieve capacity pressure at other locations. It also said maintaining more aircraft at Gatwick would reduce the need to ferry them to other bases, supporting its wider sustainability commitments. These are BA’s stated aims; the announcement did not quantify added capacity or report realized reductions in ferry flights. BA’s announcement

What happens to Boeing’s employees?
BA planned to establish British Airways Engineering Gatwick (BAEG) as a wholly owned subsidiary, alongside its existing engineering operations in South Wales and Glasgow. Boeing employees at the facility were expected to transfer after an employee information and consultation process. The initial announcement anticipated a Q2 2025 transfer, but it did not state how many employees were involved. BA also forecast that it might recruit more colleagues over the longer term; that was an expectation, not confirmation of subsequent hiring. BA’s announcement
What is known about the deal’s price and completion?
BA’s 17 February 2025 release described the acquisition as subject to usual conditions. A later BA social post said the acquisition had occurred, but the reviewed materials do not establish the formal legal closing date. Neither the price nor an exact completion date was stated in those materials. BA’s announcement BA’s later post

How does the Gatwick operation fit into BA Engineering?
British Airways Engineering’s live page describes a Gatwick team of over 350 colleagues; it does not state the page’s publication year or attribute the whole team to the Boeing transaction. The page lists EASA B and C licence certification for A320, A330, A340-200/-300, B737 Classic/NG, B744, B767 and B777. It identifies the base operation as Hangar 6 on the south side of Gatwick Airport and says its multiple-bay facility supports casualty aircraft and scheduled maintenance. These details describe the current operation as presented by BA, not a verified inventory of capabilities transferred from Boeing. British Airways Engineering

British Airways Chief Technical Officer Andy Best said the announcement would bring in the skills and expertise of former Boeing colleagues and add a large, modern hangar to BA’s engineering facilities. He said it would support fleet reliability and benefit customers and colleagues. This is BA’s executive rationale for the deal, not an independent assessment of its results. BA’s announcement
