Tony Bloom was accused in a civil High Court claim by former associate Ryan Dudfield of operating a betting syndicate said to make about £600 million a year. That figure is an allegation, not a court finding or independently verified total. A later report on Bloom’s court filing said it acknowledged betting through George Cottrell’s accounts and a profit-sharing agreement, while disputing the alleged annual scale.

What is Tony Bloom accused of?

Former associate Ryan Dudfield brought a civil High Court claim seeking a share of betting profits, according to The Guardian’s 3 December 2025 report. The claim alleged that Bloom operated a gambling syndicate using accounts associated with George Cottrell and attributed about £600 million in annual winnings to the group.

In a later account of Bloom’s court filing, The Guardian reported on 23 January 2026 that the filing acknowledged the syndicate placed millions of pounds of bets through Cottrell’s accounts and that Bloom, Cottrell and Dudfield had an agreement to split winnings. The same report said the filing called the £600 million annual figure an exaggeration. These are competing accounts within a civil dispute, not a judgment resolving the allegations.

What does the £600m figure mean?

It is the annual winnings figure attributed by The Guardian to Dudfield’s High Court claim. It should not be described as verified turnover, profit, or a finding by the court. Bloom’s later reported filing disputed its scale.

The January report also cited a separate figure: $3.7 million in net winnings on bets using Cottrell’s accounts from August to December 2022. That amount covers a defined period and a particular set of account-based bets; it is not the same measure as the £600 million annual allegation, and it does not independently establish that allegation.

Did Tony Bloom bet on Brighton?

Bloom denied betting on Brighton matches after becoming the club’s owner in 2009. In a statement issued through Brighton & Hove Albion and reproduced by The Guardian, he said: “I can categorically assure our supporters that I have not placed bets on any Brighton & Hove Albion matches since becoming the owner of the club in 2009.”

Bloom’s statement said the FA’s 2014 policy allowed certain owners to continue betting on football under strict conditions, barred bets on matches or competitions involving Brighton, and required annual audits of his football bets. BBC Sport also reported his denial and his account of the annual audits. These statements describe Bloom’s position and do not independently verify the underlying betting records.

Who is Ryan Dudfield?

Dudfield is described in the reporting as Bloom’s former associate and the claimant in the civil dispute. His claim sought a share of betting profits and made the allegations about the syndicate’s annual winnings and use of Cottrell-associated accounts. The available reports do not provide an attributable direct statement from Dudfield.

What is known about the case’s outcome?

The cited substantive reporting describes a claim and a later court filing, not a final finding on whether the alleged conduct occurred or what amount, if any, is owed. The procedural outcome after the 23 January 2026 filing is not established by these reports. Claims that the dispute has settled, been dismissed or reached judgment require a newer reliable source.
