Robot Cache did launch globally on July 6, 2023, but its proposed “blockchain currency,” IRON, was not a freely tradable cryptocurrency. The company’s SEC offering circular described it as platform-only store credit, valued at $0.01 per IRON in the disclosed program and unavailable for withdrawal or exchange trading. The storefront was later reported to be closing, although the exact final access date is not confirmed by the sources available here.
What was Robot Cache?
Robot Cache was a PC digital game storefront associated with game-industry executive Brian Fargo. Its central pitch was that digital game licenses need not be permanent, non-transferable purchases: a player could list an eligible game for resale, and if another user bought it, the seller would give up access in return for a partial refund or store credit. Publisher restrictions and the game’s purchase terms could limit whether resale was available.

Robot Cache also said publishers and developers would receive about 95% of game-sale proceeds. That was the company’s launch-era promotional claim, not an independently verified measure of actual payouts. Robot Cache’s launch page described its original pitch.
What was IRON, and could users trade it?
In its SEC offering circular, Robot Cache described IRON as digital store credit for purchases on its platform. The company said users could opt in to use their personal computers to validate blockchain transactions and receive IRON, which could then be spent on games in the store.

The filing explicitly distinguished IRON from cryptocurrency: it said IRON was not an ERC-20 or other utility or security token, could not be withdrawn from or traded on Robot Cache, and was not tradable on cryptocurrency exchanges. The filing stated a fixed value of $0.01 USD per IRON for that disclosed program. This was a historical, platform-bound term—not a current cash value or a promise that users could redeem balances after the service’s reported closure. Robot Cache’s SEC offering circular sets out those terms.
When did Robot Cache launch?
- May 2020: An earlier SEC filing said the platform had been completed and was operating in open beta.
- July 6, 2023: A later company SEC filing dates Robot Cache’s global launch to this day, following earlier regional launches.
The later filing is the source for the global launch date; it records the company’s account of its platform, not an independent assessment of its commercial performance. The later SEC filing also describes subsequent corporate changes.

What happened to Robot Cache and users’ games?
Robot Cache’s corporate filings describe a shift away from its PC game platform in 2024 toward an AI-focused business. The company changed its name from Robot Cache US Inc. to Cloudhands, Inc., effective March 18, 2025, and disclosed that its Robot Cache S.L. subsidiary was formally dissolved and liquidated in November 2024.
In April 2026, PC Gamer reported on a purported customer email saying the store would close in 30 days, purchasing had already been disabled, players would lose access to games even if they had downloaded them, and unused IRON would expire. Because the report relied on a user-shared email, it does not establish the exact final shutdown date or independently confirm what happened to every customer’s account or balance. PC Gamer’s April 2026 report describes the reported notice and its implications.
