The “another $1 billion” refers to a second Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV) investment fund reported by Bloomberg on January 19, 2021—not a new 2026 fundraise. Bloomberg reported that BEV’s first billion had backed 45 startups. The 2021 announcement was a new round of funding for an existing climate-investment effort, not the launch of the organization.
What the $1 billion announcement covered
Bloomberg reported on January 19, 2021, that Bill Gates-led BEV had raised $1 billion for a second round of investments. The same report said the first billion had backed 45 startups. Those figures describe the announcement and portfolio at that time; they do not establish the size or status of any later BEV fund.
BEV dates to 2016. The U.S. Department of Energy described it at launch as an investor-led vehicle intended to provide more than $1 billion in patient capital for early-stage clean energy. The 2021 raise was therefore a second fund round, not BEV’s founding.
What kinds of companies BEV says it targets
Breakthrough Energy’s current programs page says BEV invests in science-driven companies with the potential to reduce at least 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions—described by the organization as about half a gigaton per year. This is BEV’s stated investment ambition, not a verified outcome achieved by its portfolio.

The organization identifies five areas of focus:
- Manufacturing
- Electricity
- Agriculture
- Transportation
- Buildings
That scope helps explain the “climate innovation” framing: BEV describes its focus in terms of companies developing solutions across major emitting parts of the economy, rather than limiting its stated remit to one technology or sector.

Breakthrough Energy Catalyst is a separate project-finance program. Axios reported in February 2026 on Catalyst’s plans and a decision not to raise a second Catalyst project-finance fund. That report does not establish whether BEV raised another venture fund after January 2021, and it should not be read as an update to BEV’s fund history.

The available announcements establish BEV’s second $1 billion round in 2021, but do not establish whether it raised a third fund or announced a later fundraise. As a result, the 2021 round should be described by its date rather than called BEV’s latest.
