In April 2024, bank employees in Rio de Janeiro called police after a woman brought a 68-year-old man who did not respond and tried to guide his hand with a pen during a loan application. Police said forensic analysis found he had died before reaching the bank. The woman was arrested on suspicion of fraud; the arrest and allegations do not establish that she knew he was dead or that she was guilty.
What happened at the bank?
The incident took place on April 16, 2024, at a bank branch in Bangu, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro. Reuters reported that Érika Vieira Nunes brought 68-year-old Paulo Roberto Braga to seek a 17,000-real loan in his name.
Surveillance footage, as described in contemporaneous reporting, showed Nunes trying to guide Braga’s hand with a pen. Bank employees became suspicious when he did not respond and his head fell back when she stopped supporting it. They called police, who arrested her on suspicion of fraud.
What did police say about the man’s death?
Reuters reported that police forensic analysis determined Braga had died before arriving at the bank. The report said he had been dead for hours, but the available accounts do not establish a precise time or cause of death.

The Washington Post attributed this comment to Fábio Souza, identified as the lead police investigator, speaking to GloboNews: “Anyone watching the video can tell he was dead.” That is the investigator’s assessment; it is not a court finding about what Nunes knew or whether she committed a crime.
What loan was reportedly sought?
Reuters reported the requested amount as 17,000 Brazilian reais. Its April 2024 report gave an approximate conversion of US$3,250 at the time; that historical conversion should not be read as the amount’s current dollar value.

What is known about the legal case?
A May 2, 2024 report by legal-news outlet SEDEP said a court accepted the prosecution’s complaint and revoked Nunes’s preventive detention. Those steps do not amount to a final verdict. The cited reporting does not establish the case’s present disposition or whether there has been a final judgment.
Some accounts described Braga as Nunes’s uncle, but the exact family relationship has not been independently established in the reporting summarized here. The central allegations should therefore be described as allegations, not as proven criminal intent or guilt.
