Brazil Traders Expected January 2026 Soybean Shipments to Miss ANEC’s Outlook

Brazilian traders warned in late January 2026 that soybean exports could fall short of the 3.8 million metric tons in ANEC’s vessel-schedule estimate. That figure was not a final shipment total: ANEC was reconsidering it, citing a possible slowdown late in the month and logistics bottlenecks. Later publications reported different January totals—1.9 million tonnes in Brazilian government data and 2,375,993 tonnes in ANEC’s statistics—so the figures need to be read by source and reporting vintage.

Why traders questioned the January forecast

On January 22, 2026, Reuters reported that some Brazilian traders expected January soybean exports to miss ANEC’s 3.8 million metric ton outlook. ANEC said the estimate was based on vessel schedules and was under reconsideration; it thought late-month shipments could slow enough to bring the monthly total closer to 3 million tons. The association cited possible logistics bottlenecks and noted that much of the soy shipped in January had been planted in 2024 and harvested in 2025. Reuters reported the contemporaneous outlook.

Traders’ concern centered on the expectation of an unusually early harvest. One Brazilian trader, quoted anonymously by Reuters, put January exports at around 2 million metric tons. A second said the market had prepared for quick shipments, but harvest was moving at a normal pace rather than ahead of schedule, making shipments likely to shift into February. These were individual market views, not a verified consensus forecast. Reuters’ report attributed the estimates and explanation to the traders.

What the January progress figures did—and did not—show

Brazilian government trade data cited by Reuters showed 1.307 million tons shipped during the first three weeks of January 2026, compared with about 1 million tons in the corresponding period of 2025. That was a partial-month snapshot, not the final January total.

Hedgepoint Global estimated that 3% of Brazil’s planted soybean area had been harvested by the Friday before the Reuters report, versus 1.1% at the same point in 2025. The comparison showed an earlier start than the prior year, but it did not establish that harvest was ahead of schedule or that the 3.8 million ton export estimate would be met. Reuters reported the Hedgepoint estimate.

How much soy Brazil reported exporting in January 2026

Later monthly publications give different soybean export totals. Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services consolidated statistics report 1.9 million tonnes in January, valued at US$821.9 million, with quantity up 75.5% year over year. ANEC’s later statistics list 2,375,993 tonnes for January 2026, compared with 1,124,713 tonnes for January 2025. The government’s consolidated trade statistics and ANEC’s export statistics should be treated as separate publisher figures.

3.8 million metric tons ANEC’s schedule-based January outlook, under reconsideration; not a final total. Reuters report, January 2026.

Around 2 million metric tons One anonymous trader’s estimate for the month, not a consensus forecast. Reuters report, January 2026.
1.307 million tons Shipments in the first three weeks of January, not a full-month result. Brazilian government data cited by Reuters.
1.9 million tonnes January soybean exports; government-reported value was US$821.9 million and quantity was up 75.5% year over year. Brazilian government consolidated statistics, published later.
2,375,993 tonnes ANEC’s later January 2026 total; its January 2025 comparison was 1,124,713 tonnes. ANEC statistics, published later and subject to retroactive revision.

The government and ANEC totals differ, and the available published information does not fully explain why. ANEC says its figures are revised retroactively at each month end and can differ from earlier reports; that caution does not establish that its total is a revision of the government figure. Keep each publisher’s number attached to its source rather than choosing one as definitive or combining them.

How to interpret the January miss

The contemporaneous story was about a schedule-based expectation meeting the pace of harvest and the practical timing of shipments. ANEC’s 3.8 million ton figure was an outlook, the 1.307 million ton figure covered only three weeks, and the later monthly totals came from different publishers. The sources support harvest timing and possible logistics constraints as concerns raised at the time; they do not establish a single cause for the gap or show that logistics alone determined the final figures.

Broader export context is not soybean data

Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock reported January 2026 agribusiness exports of US$10.8 billion, down 2.2% from January 2025. Across the agribusiness sector, export volume rose 7.0% while average prices fell 8.6%. These are all-sector figures and should not be read as soybean-only export values or volumes. The ministry’s January agribusiness figures provide that broader context.
