These were two distinct crop developments reported in May 2024—not confirmed final-loss figures or current forecasts.
What happened to Brazil’s soybean harvest?
Floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state, struck while a substantial share of the soybean crop was still in the fields. A May 2024 Farm Policy News summary of Reuters reporting said about one quarter of the state’s soybeans remained to be harvested as the outlook worsened. The summary described rain-related damage to crops and disruption to transport and power infrastructure.
Leandro da Silva, a manager at farm cooperative Cotrisal, estimated that state soybean production could decline by as much as 15%, leaving output at 19–20 million metric tons. Those were contemporaneous estimates, not a verified final harvest result. The report’s figures are summarized by Farm Policy News.
“At risk” did not mean already lost
May 2024 reporting put about 5 million metric tons of soybeans “at risk,” while some analysts expected eventual losses to be lower, around 1–2 million metric tons. These figures describe different things: the at-risk estimate covered production exposed to potential damage, whereas the lower figure was an estimate of possible final losses. Neither should be read as a confirmed total of beans destroyed or omitted from the final harvest. The estimates and their uncertainty are summarized in Farm Policy News.

Rainfall and disruption
Emater-RS data cited in the same May 2024 summary recorded 150–500 millimeters of rain in central areas of Rio Grande do Sul from April 29, including about 540 millimeters at Restinga Seca. These are reported local measurements, not statewide averages. Flooding also damaged logistics and power infrastructure, closed roads, and slowed handling at the Rio Grande port; the report said the port had not suspended operations.
Why was Argentina’s corn forecast cut?
On May 6, 2024, the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange lowered its forecast for Argentina’s 2023/24 corn crop to 46.5 million metric tons from 49.5 million, a reduction of 3 million metric tons. The exchange cited a damaging leafhopper outbreak and poor weather, according to the contemporaneous report. This was a forecast revision, not proof that realized production fell by exactly 3 million metric tons. The figures and causes are summarized in Farm Policy News.

How the two crop stories differ
| Development | Crop and geography | What the May 2024 figures meant |
|---|---|---|
| Flood threat | Unfinished soybean harvest in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil | About one quarter remained to be reaped; around 5 million metric tons were reported at risk, while some analysts estimated possible final losses at 1–2 million metric tons. These were estimates, not confirmed outcomes. |
| Forecast revision | 2023/24 corn crop in Argentina | The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange cut its forecast from 49.5 million to 46.5 million metric tons, citing leafhoppers and poor weather. The change was a 3-million-ton forecast reduction, not a final loss measurement. |
The Brazil report concerned exposure and estimated damage to a harvest still underway; the Argentina report concerned a lower crop forecast for a specified season. Treating the numbers as equivalent measures of realized losses would be misleading.

The May 2024 accounts capture the outlook at the time, but the cited material does not establish a verified final soybean loss total for Rio Grande do Sul. It also does not turn Argentina’s revised corn forecast into a confirmed production result. Conab’s September 28, 2026 bulletin describes a different season: rainfall supported the beginning of Brazil’s 2026/27 first-crop planting, including soybeans where planting restrictions had ended, while excess moisture affected winter crops in 2025/26. That later update does not revise either 2024 estimate.
