Brazil is seeking Chinese expertise and potential investment for transport infrastructure that could move agricultural exports from the country’s interior toward Atlantic and Pacific ports. Publicly reported steps include railway-network planning, regulator outreach, site assessments and discussions with a Chinese construction company. They do not establish that China has committed financing to build the proposed Brazil–Peru corridor.
How Brazil is trying to attract Chinese participation
Brazilian agencies have used several channels to promote transport opportunities and explore cooperation. The actions reported so far are at planning and discussion stages, rather than evidence of a funded construction program.
Railway network planning
On 7 July 2025, Brazil’s Infra S.A. and China Railway Economic and Planning Research Institute signed a memorandum for the Chinese institute to study Brazil’s railway network. Brazil’s Planning Ministry said the work would consider multimodal integration—roads, railways, waterways, ports and airports—as well as existing projects. On 27 May 2025, the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) said its director general met Chinese ambassador Zhu Qingqiao and embassy staff to discuss Brazil’s conceded transport infrastructure and connect Chinese stakeholders with opportunities in land-transport infrastructure. Discussions with a Chinese company
Brazil’s Transport Ministry reported that it received representatives of China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) on 19 August 2025 to discuss cooperation and investment opportunities in the Brazilian railway sector. What the proposed farm-freight link could connect
A Bahia state government report dated 17 April 2025 said Chinese railway engineers visited the works on the West-East Integration Railway (FIOL) and Porto Sul to assess their potential in relation to the proposed Brazil–Peru Bioceanic Corridor. The described route would cross Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Rondônia and Acre, linking central Brazil’s production region with Peru’s Port of Chancay. The concept matters to agriculture because it aims to connect production areas to export infrastructure. But a corridor’s usefulness depends on more than a line on a map: its route, links to other transport modes, port access, cost and delivery arrangements would all shape whether it can serve freight competitively. The reported network study explicitly includes multimodal connections; the available reports do not establish final route economics or a complete schedule.
Why China is a significant potential partner
The commercial context is substantial. Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) reported that China received 36.1% of Brazil’s agribusiness exports in 2023, the highest share in MAPA’s series. MAPA also reported US$99 million in Chinese investment in Brazil’s agricultural sector in 2022. The latter is a sector-wide figure, not funding for a railway or the proposed corridor. MAPA
