Brendan Eich’s claim is straightforward: when enough people choose products that do not depend on surveillance, their purchasing and switching decisions can change what advertisers, publishers and competitors build. Brave is his test case. The browser blocks many third-party trackers by default, matches optional ads on the device rather than sending browsing histories to advertisers, and shares a stated portion of ad revenue with participating users through Basic Attention Token (BAT).
That is a market experiment, not proof that privacy has defeated surveillance advertising. Brave remains a commercial company with ads, subscriptions, search services and crypto-related features. Its significance is that it tries to make privacy economically viable rather than treating it only as a regulatory demand.
What Eich means by “users can move markets”
In a Cybernews interview, Brave co-founder and CEO Brendan Eich argued that consumers do not have to wait for regulators to redesign the technology industry. His view is that people can create pressure by choosing products whose business models require less personal data. That is Eich’s analysis, not an independently verified claim about every regulator or law. (Cybernews interview)
The proposed chain is:
- People switch browsers or search engines.
- Those products build a substantial audience outside dominant ad-tech channels.
- Advertisers gain a reason to buy inventory that does not require individual cross-site profiles.
- Publishers and creators gain another way to receive financial support.
- Competitors copy effective privacy features to retain users.
- Regulators face working alternatives rather than only theoretical privacy rules.
The chain can fail at any link. A privacy tool needs enough users, advertiser demand, publisher participation and trust to become a durable market, not merely a technically impressive product.

How Brave tries to turn that theory into a product
Shields block common tracking by default
Brave’s built-in Shields block many third-party ads and trackers, cross-site cookies and known tracking techniques without requiring separate extensions. Brave also describes fingerprinting defenses, phishing protection, bounce-tracking protections and unlinkable bouncing. Some Google-specific connections and telemetry are removed or proxied. The controls are adjustable, so a user can make a site-specific exception when a page fails.
Brave is based on Chromium on desktop and Android. The iOS version must use Apple’s WebKit requirement, so behavior and engine-level capabilities differ by platform. (Brave product overview)
Blocking is not the same as anonymity
Brave says its browser does not collect or retain browsing history, while noting that some functions can process limited operational information, such as an IP address when required. That statement applies to the browser’s practices, not every Brave website, wallet, forum, partner or account you may use. (Brave browser privacy policy)
A site can still identify you through a login, a purchase, information you submit, your network connection, unusual behavior or tracking that evades a particular defense. Brave reduces common profiling; it does not make every activity anonymous.

Brave’s advertising model versus surveillance advertising
Conventional behavioral advertising often combines persistent identifiers, cross-site tracking and inferred profiles to decide which ad to show and to measure a conversion. Not every ad uses every technique, but that data-intensive model is the one Brave is trying to replace.
Brave says eligible Brave Ads are matched on the device using private browser information. The personal data used for matching is not supposed to leave the device, and reporting is based on anonymous or aggregated events rather than an identifiable history of the sites a person visited. The ad can still be relevant; “privacy-preserving” does not mean random.
Brave’s browser privacy policy says it cannot determine which specific private ad a user viewed or interacted with. Its design therefore separates relevance from sending a user’s browsing record to an ad network. (Privacy policy; Brave Ads FAQ)
This is not an ad-free web. Shields block third-party ads on sites, while Brave can show first-party ads inside its own products. Search advertising is a separate system from browser-based Brave Ads.

What Brave Rewards and BAT actually provide
Brave Rewards is optional. A user can browse with Shields and never enroll. If Rewards and Brave Ads are enabled, Brave says the user receives 70% of the ad revenue Brave receives. The reward is paid in BAT, a digital asset that can be held, used to support participating creators or exchanged through supported arrangements. (Brave Ads FAQ)
That is not guaranteed income and is not payment simply for browsing. Eligibility, country, account or wallet setup, fraud controls and payout providers can affect whether rewards are available. Brave’s policy says a Rewards Payment ID and country code are used for eligibility and fraud prevention. BAT’s market value can fluctuate, and conversion may involve fees, identity checks, custody choices, tax obligations and geographic restrictions. (Rewards privacy details)
Creators may receive support through tips, but their participation and the available payout route also depend on the relevant service and jurisdiction. The economic loop is therefore conditional, not a predictable rebate on internet use.
How Brave makes money without selling browsing histories
“Privacy-first” does not mean “noncommercial.” Brave is a privately held, for-profit company. Its stated revenue sources include:
Rank #4
- Managed-node control in the router: Browse available SSRouter regions in S1's local dashboard and select a managed node without configuring a separate VPN provider.
- Switch nodes in the browser: Join S1 WiFi or LAN, sign in to the local dashboard, select Use this node, and see which managed node is active.
- Three routing modes: Direct uses the regular internet connection; Global routes supported traffic through the selected managed node; Smart applies country-based rules to supported traffic.
- Encrypted router-to-node link: Traffic routed through an SSRouter-managed node uses Trojan over TLS between S1 and that node. Compatible devices connected to S1 do not each need a VPN app; AX3000 WiFi 6 and four 2.5G Ethernet ports support wired and wireless use.
- Setup and service terms: Connect S1 WAN to an internet-ready DHCP router or gateway; S1 is not a modem. Managed-node access ends after 30 days or 100 GB from first activation, whichever comes first; no automatic renewal; a separate plan is required afterward.
- Brave Ads and first-party placements such as New Tab Takeovers.
- Brave Search advertising.
- Premium products including Firewall + VPN, Talk Premium, Leo Premium and Search Premium.
- Search API subscriptions.
- Partnership arrangements.
- Fees connected with fiat-to-crypto transactions through Brave Wallet on-ramp partners and creator-tip services.
Brave also operates a self-serve advertising program. In a March 2026 announcement, it said the minimum campaign spend had been reduced to $500 per month; that dated figure is a product signal, not a universal quote for every campaign. The same announcement said Brave News Ads were retired as of July 2025. (Brave FAQ; self-serve advertising announcement)
The relevant test is not whether Brave earns revenue. It is whether it can earn revenue without needing to identify and follow a person across unrelated websites.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Brave Search private in the same way?
No product label should collapse browser privacy and search privacy into one promise. Brave says Brave Search does not build user profiles for sale or sharing and offers an ad-free Search Premium tier. Search advertising is separate from browser Brave Ads and is not described as BAT-earning inventory. (Brave overview; Brave Search advertising help)
That stated no-profile approach does not mean that no technical processing or network metadata exists. Search queries, IP-address handling, infrastructure and account choices depend on the applicable notice and product configuration. Result quality, local-search coverage and AI-generated summaries are separate questions from whether a profile is built.

Can users really move the market?
The strongest case for Eich’s thesis
- Switching browsers is relatively easy, and Brave offers import tools for settings, passwords and extensions, subject to platform configuration.
- Core tracker blocking is on by default, so users do not need advanced privacy expertise.
- A large privacy-conscious audience gives advertisers a reason to test contextual or on-device approaches.
- Creators and publishers can gain alternatives to conventional tracking-funded advertising.
- Competitive pressure can make anti-tracking features normal even outside Brave.
Brave’s free download and availability across major desktop and mobile platforms lower the cost of trying the model. (Brave homepage)
Why adoption may not be enough
- Incumbent browsers benefit from operating-system distribution, account synchronization and workplace requirements.
- Users may value compatibility, streaming, banking access or ecosystem integration more than privacy.
- Blocking scripts, cookies or anti-bot signals can break sites; a site-specific exception restores function but may restore some tracking.
- Advertisers may still prefer individual-level retargeting and familiar attribution systems.
- BAT adds volatility, custody and regulatory friction.
- Privacy claims require continuing trust in Brave’s code, policies, measurement and partners.
- Brave’s Chromium base gives it compatibility but does not eliminate dependence on a dominant browser engine.
Without scale, the proposed chain—user choice to advertiser demand to sustainable revenue—remains fragile. No exact current Brave market share is established here, so claims that users have already displaced incumbent models would go beyond the evidence.
Practical trade-offs before switching
When Brave is a good fit
- You want built-in blocking instead of assembling extensions.
- You accept privacy-preserving first-party ads or prefer to disable them separately.
- You are comfortable evaluating an independent search index.
- You want optional BAT and understand it is a volatile digital asset, not income.
- You can tolerate occasional site-specific troubleshooting.
When another choice may fit better
- Firefox: a non-Chromium engine and Mozilla’s privacy orientation. Vendor site
- DuckDuckGo: a simpler privacy-search proposition without BAT. Vendor site
- Mullvad Browser: stronger anti-fingerprinting emphasis, with fewer mainstream convenience features. Vendor site
- Tor Browser: stronger anonymity goals, generally with more restrictions and slower performance. Vendor site
- Safari: deep Apple integration and built-in anti-tracking for users committed to that ecosystem. Vendor site
What Eich’s argument proves—and what it does not
Brave demonstrates that a browser can block widespread tracking, perform ad matching locally and sell privacy-positioned advertising and subscriptions. It also shows that a user-reward system can be layered onto that model, although BAT introduces real financial and administrative complexity.
It does not prove that consumer choice alone can displace surveillance advertising. The outcome depends on convenient software, credible privacy practices, compatible websites, willing advertisers, participating creators and enough sustained adoption. Users can move markets, but only when the privacy-preserving alternative is good enough to keep using and commercially durable enough for others to follow.
