What the result notice says
BPSSC states that the preliminary written examination was held on 17 December 2023 in two shifts and that 1,275 vacancies were advertised. The notice reports the following participation and evaluation figures:
| Measure | Count in BPSSC notice dated 25 January 2024 |
|---|---|
| Registered candidates | 660,537 |
| Candidates who appeared | 536,754 |
| Candidates disqualified | 21,758 |
| Answer sheets evaluated | 514,996 |
The commission says candidates were chosen for mains in merit order and by reservation category, with selection aimed at 20 times the category vacancies, subject to the rules and conditions in the notice. It explicitly cautions that the qualified-candidates list is not to be treated as a merit list.

Qualification is not final selection
A roll number in this PDF established progression from prelims to the mains written examination only. It did not establish a final rank, selection, or appointment. BPSSC’s official listing shows that the same recruitment later had a mains result on 15 March 2024, a physical efficiency test and document-verification notice on 8 April 2024, and a final result on 9 July 2024. The 2023 prelims result is therefore part of a completed historical recruitment cycle.

The BPSSC notice is the primary source for the figures above. An Indian Express report published on 8 February 2024 gives substantially different counts—45,510 appeared, 44,381 answer sheets were evaluated, and 1,129 candidates were ineligible. Those figures conflict with BPSSC’s notice, which reports 536,754 appeared, 514,996 evaluated answer sheets, and 21,758 disqualified candidates. The discrepancy is unresolved here; for the official recruitment record, use the commission’s notice rather than combining the two accounts.
