Atlas and Digit are aimed at different industrial work, and the clearest difference today is deployment maturity. Boston Dynamics describes its all-electric Atlas as in development and field-testing with Hyundai, with factory sequencing planned from 2028. Agility has a public customer-site record for Digit 4 in logistics, while the published payload and endurance figures belong to the newer, still-in-development Digit 5. The available company sources do not establish a head-to-head winner.
What is the difference between Atlas and Digit?
Atlas is Boston Dynamics’ all-electric humanoid platform, being tested with Hyundai for factory sequencing work. Hyundai has announced a phased plan to begin deploying Atlas for parts sequencing in 2028 and expand to component assembly by 2030; those are future milestones, not completed deployments. Boston Dynamics describes Atlas and its field testing, while Hyundai’s 2026 strategy announcement sets out the planned timeline.
Digit has a more established public operational history in warehouse logistics, but generation matters. Agility’s customer-site operating-hours and GXO deployment history concern Digit 4. The listed payload, reach and endurance figures are preliminary estimates for Digit 5, which Agility says remains in development.
How do their stated capabilities compare?
| Measure or evidence | Atlas | Digit |
|---|---|---|
| Current status in cited sources | All-electric platform in development; field testing with Hyundai on real-world sequencing tasks. Boston Dynamics | Digit 4 has reported customer-site operations. Digit 5 is in development. Agility Robotics |
| Reach | 2.3 m (7.5 ft), listed on the Atlas product page. Boston Dynamics | 2.2 m (7.2 ft), a preliminary Digit 5 estimate based on Agility’s internal testing and benchmarking of pre-production configurations. Agility Robotics |
| Payload | Not stated on the cited Atlas product page. Boston Dynamics | 23 kg (50 lb), a preliminary Digit 5 estimate based on Agility’s internal testing and benchmarking of pre-production configurations. Agility Robotics |
| Endurance | Not stated on the cited Atlas product page. Boston Dynamics | Digit 5 page lists a 10:1 run-to-charge ratio and up to 20 work hours in a 24-hour period as preliminary estimates based on internal testing and benchmarking of pre-production configurations. Agility Robotics |
| Operational evidence | Field testing with Hyundai; planned factory milestones are 2028 for parts sequencing and 2030 for component assembly. Boston Dynamics; Hyundai Motor Group | Agility reports more than 65,000 Digit 4 operational hours across customer sites and a cumulative 100,000-tote milestone at GXO’s Flowery Branch facility. These are company-reported figures, not independent audits. Agility Robotics; Agility Robotics |
These figures are not a controlled comparison. In particular, the Digit 5 specifications are vendor estimates for pre-production configurations, while Digit’s reported operating history is for Digit 4. The cited sources do not provide comparable speed, uptime, safety results, throughput, or final pricing for the two platforms.

What work are Atlas and Digit designed to do?
Atlas: factory sequencing and assembly plans
Boston Dynamics says Atlas is field-testing real-world sequencing tasks with Hyundai. Hyundai’s announced roadmap starts with parts sequencing in 2028 and plans component assembly by 2030. This supports describing Atlas as directed toward prospective factory work; it does not establish production throughput or prove broad capability across factory tasks.
Digit: warehouse tote and material handling
Agility and GXO announced a multi-year Robots-as-a-Service agreement in June 2024 following a proof-of-concept pilot. Their announcement describes Digit operating in GXO logistics operations, including at a SPANX facility, integrated with existing automation such as autonomous mobile robots. Agility’s stated operational history also names GXO, Schaeffler, Amazon, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada as customer sites. The GXO agreement announcement describes the arrangement; Agility’s Digit 5 announcement reports the later Digit 4 operating-hours figure.

The deployment record is evidence of customer-site work, not proof that Digit 5 has performed those same tasks or that it will produce the same results at another facility.
What trade-offs matter to a factory or warehouse?
- Deployment evidence: Digit 4 has a more visible customer-site record in logistics. Atlas is at the field-testing stage in the cited evidence, with Hyundai’s factory milestones still planned.
- Task fit: Atlas’s stated path centers on factory sequencing and later component assembly. Digit’s documented setting is logistics, including tote movement and integration into warehouse automation. Those use cases are distinct, so neither description proves broader versatility.
- Specification transparency: Agility publishes preliminary Digit 5 payload, reach and endurance estimates. The cited Atlas page lists reach, but not a comparable payload or runtime. Missing Atlas figures should not be treated as evidence of inferior performance.
- Facility integration: GXO’s announcement describes Digit working alongside existing automation. A site still needs to assess how a robot fits its workflows and systems; the announcement does not establish plug-and-play results at other facilities.
- Commercial and performance certainty: The cited sources do not establish final comparative prices, independently validated reliability, comparative safety outcomes, or a head-to-head throughput result.
Which robot is better for a factory or warehouse?
There is no evidence-based overall winner in the available company material. A warehouse operator evaluating tote handling can examine Digit’s reported Digit 4 customer-site activity and GXO agreement, while treating Digit 5’s specifications as preliminary. A manufacturer considering sequencing or assembly can track Hyundai’s Atlas testing and announced schedule, while recognizing that future milestones are plans rather than evidence of completed rollout.
