Boom Supersonic chose Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina, for its planned Overture aircraft factory in 2022. The company reported the building complete on June 17, 2024, but that milestone does not establish that aircraft production has started. Its announcements also included projected jobs, investment, incentives and factory capacity; those figures should not be read as realized results.
Where is the Overture Superfactory?
The planned factory is at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina. Boom announced the site on January 26, 2022. The company described a roughly 400,000-square-foot facility on a 65-acre campus, intended to assemble Overture aircraft, test them and deliver completed aircraft to customers.
Boom said it selected the location for its access to aerospace suppliers, technical schools, workers and the eastern seaboard. Those are the company’s stated reasons for choosing the site, rather than an independent evaluation of the region.
What has happened at the factory?
- January 26, 2022: Boom and the North Carolina Governor’s Office announced the site. Boom said it expected to break ground that year and begin production in 2024. Its announcement-era schedule projected Overture rollout in 2025, first flight in 2026 and first passengers by 2029; these were targets stated in 2022, not confirmation of current dates.
- November 9, 2023: Boom said the building frame had topped out and anticipated completing the building in the second quarter of 2024.
- June 17, 2024: Boom held a ribbon-cutting and reported that construction was complete. The company said it was preparing the production floor and beginning tooling installation, including an advanced test cell. It did not announce that aircraft production had begun.
Is the factory producing Overture aircraft now?
The available current company homepage, accessed October 7, 2026, highlights Boom’s programs but does not establish the Greensboro facility’s operating status or aircraft output. The latest detailed factory milestone identified here is the June 2024 construction-completion announcement. Without a newer direct confirmation, it would be inaccurate to describe the factory as currently producing Overture aircraft.

What to make of the announcement
The project combines a completed-building milestone with much longer-term plans. For readers assessing its public-finance implications, the distinction matters: a projected economic impact is not revenue already received by the state, and a conditional reimbursement ceiling is not the same as a grant paid unconditionally. North Carolina’s 2022 announcement said potential JDIG payments depended on annual verification of job and investment targets.

Likewise, the factory’s stated annual capacity is not an aircraft delivery count. Boom’s June 2024 release described planned capacity and ongoing tooling work, not completed production. The milestones support saying that the factory building was reported complete; they do not support treating the project’s full employment, incentive, economic-impact or output targets as achieved.
