The airline cancelled flights on 30 April 2024 after aircraft lessors required its planes to be grounded. Bonza entered liquidation on 2 July 2024. The latest dated update available here is from April 2025; its status after that date is not confirmed.
What happened to Bonza flights?
- 29 April 2024: Aircraft lessors issued lease-termination notices requiring the aircraft to stop operating and remain grounded. The notices followed default notices issued on 17 April, although Bonza’s directors said the lessors’ action was not expected. The administrator communication reproduced by the Australian Government records the events.
- 30 April 2024: Bonza cancelled flights and its board appointed administrators. The government initially described the suspension as temporary, but that was not the eventual outcome.
- 11 June 2024: A later government briefing says Hall Chadwick announced all future Bonza flights were cancelled and the employment of all 323 staff had been terminated.
- 2 July 2024: Bonza entered liquidation, according to the government’s September 2024 briefing. This is distinct from the voluntary administration that began when administrators were appointed in April. The Australian Government’s 2024–25 Supplementary Budget Estimates briefing gives the later dates and employee figure.
The ACCC identified Hall Chadwick as liquidator in August 2024. On 15 April 2025, the Australian Federation of Air Pilots reported that the liquidator had told it the previous day that its position had not changed and that it would pursue outcomes for creditors. That report said eventual outcomes were unclear. It is the latest dated update available here, not confirmation of the liquidation’s status in October 2026. Read the AFAP update.
What should you do about a Bonza booking?
Contact the liquidator
In its 22 August 2024 release, the ACCC listed Hall Chadwick as Bonza’s liquidator and gave these customer contact details: 03 8678 1600 and [email protected]. Because the details are from that dated release, check Hall Chadwick’s current official information before relying on them. The ACCC cautions that what happens to outstanding bookings, credits, gift cards, refunds and reimbursements depends on the administration or liquidation process. See the ACCC release.
Ask your payment provider about a chargeback
If you paid by credit card, debit card or a secure payment service such as PayPal, ask your bank, card issuer or payment provider whether you can request a chargeback. The ACCC says this may be possible; it is not a guaranteed refund, and the outcome of consumer claims depends on the liquidation. Keep your booking confirmation, payment record and relevant correspondence together in case they are needed.

Do not rely on the 2024 emergency assistance as a current offer
When flights were cancelled, Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar said they were willing to help affected passengers, including people stranded away from home who needed to return to their home port. The government hotline was announced as a limited-period measure through 2 May 2024. These were immediate responses at the time, not current travel or refund offers. The government later reported that more than 23,000 Bonza ticket holders had been flown at no charge by the three airlines; that is a historical assistance figure, not an available entitlement today. What about former Bonza employees?
The government says all 323 Bonza employees had their employment terminated by 11 June 2024. Eligible former employees of an employer in liquidation may be able to seek help through the Fair Entitlements Guarantee (FEG) for unpaid entitlements. Eligibility depends on individual circumstances; the program does not mean every former employee will qualify. Check the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations’ Bonza FEG information.

What did Bonza’s collapse mean for airline competition?
In August 2024, the ACCC reported that after Bonza’s collapse and Rex’s withdrawal from metropolitan routes, no Australian domestic route had more than two competing airline groups as of July 2024. It warned that the exits could reduce choice and expose passengers to higher fares on affected routes. This is a dated competition finding, not a check of current routes or fares. ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said: “Consumers generally enjoy lower airfares where there is more competition on a route.”
