The reported Boeing deal is no longer best described as a confirmed sale of 500 jets. In May 2026, the White House described China’s initial purchase commitment as 200 aircraft, and Boeing confirmed that commitment. President Donald Trump separately said the total could rise to as many as 750. That larger figure is a possible expansion, not a completed order.
What is confirmed, and what is not?
The figures refer to different stages and should not be treated as interchangeable. The White House’s May 17, 2026, fact sheet said, “China approved an initial purchase of 200 American-made Boeing aircraft for Chinese airlines.” Boeing also confirmed a 200-aircraft commitment. The sources do not identify aircraft models or provide a delivery schedule. White House fact sheet; Associated Press, May 2026.
| Figure | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 200 aircraft | Initial purchase commitment for Chinese airlines, according to the White House in May 2026; Boeing confirmed the commitment. | Announced commitment; aircraft types, airline assignments and delivery dates are not stated. |
| Up to 750 aircraft | Possible total described separately by President Trump, as reported by AP in 2026. | Potential expansion, not a completed order quantity. |
| 500 aircraft | The figure in earlier reporting reflected a possible sale, not the later stated initial commitment. | Not the confirmed initial quantity in the May 2026 announcements. |
Boeing described its China trip as having “accomplished our major goal of reopening the China market to orders for Boeing aircraft,” in a statement reported by AP on May 15, 2026. That describes market access and the commitment; it does not establish that all airline-level contracts have been signed.
What happens next?
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said the next practical steps were for China to allocate aircraft to individual airlines, followed by negotiations between Boeing and each airline for firm orders. Reuters reported on May 28, 2026, that delivery schedules had not been confirmed. Ortberg said, “The 200-jet commitment is an entirely new deal and does not include previously unannounced orders.” Reuters, May 28, 2026.

- China allocates aircraft to airlines. The sources reviewed do not name the airlines or say that allocation is complete.
- Airlines and Boeing negotiate firm orders. The 200-aircraft commitment is not, by itself, evidence that every airline-level contract has been finalized.
- Model mix and delivery timing become clearer. Neither the White House nor Boeing’s reported confirmation names aircraft models, and Reuters reported no confirmed delivery schedules.
What does the engine-parts assurance cover?
China’s Commerce Ministry said the United States would provide supply guarantees for aircraft engine parts and components, Reuters reported on May 20, 2026. The published reporting does not explain the guarantees’ terms, scope or implementation schedule, so it is not possible to tell from that statement how they would operate in practice. Reuters, May 20, 2026.
How much does the deal say about Boeing’s wider China business?
Boeing says China participates in manufacturing every in-production commercial aircraft model it lists—the 737, 767, 777 and 787—and that more than 10,000 Boeing aircraft worldwide use Chinese-made components. These company-reported figures illustrate existing supply-chain ties; they do not reveal which models are covered by the 2026 commitment. Boeing China.
