Boeing’s 777X Delay: What the 2026 Announcement Said—and the Latest Timeline

Boeing’s 2026 777X forecast came from its October 2024 announcement. The company later moved the 777-9 first-delivery expectation to 2027 as certification work continued.

Boeing’s October 11, 2024 announcement said it expected the first 777X delivery in 2026. That date is no longer Boeing’s latest expectation: the company moved the 777-9 target to 2027 in October 2025 and retained 2027 in its second-quarter 2026 results. Boeing attributed the 2024 delay to development challenges, a pause in flight testing and a work stoppage.

What Boeing announced in October 2024

On October 11, 2024, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg told employees that the company had notified customers it expected the first 777X delivery in 2026. The announcement was a change to the program’s expected schedule, not a delivery milestone or a guarantee. Boeing tied that revised expectation to development challenges, a flight-test pause and an ongoing work stoppage. Boeing’s October 11, 2024 message

When does Boeing now expect to deliver the 777X?

Boeing’s subsequent updates moved the 777-9 first-delivery expectation to 2027. Its October 2025 update reported a $4.9 billion pre-tax earnings charge associated with the revised certification timeline. In its second-quarter 2026 results, Boeing continued to anticipate first delivery in 2027. This is the company’s reported expectation, subject to certification and operational developments—not a delivery date guaranteed by regulators. The variant distinction matters: the 2024 filing gave different schedules for the 777-9, the 777-8 freighter and the 777-8 passenger aircraft. The later 2027 expectation specifically concerns the 777-9; it should not be read as a newly confirmed delivery date for every 777X variant.

Why was the 777X delayed?

Boeing’s October 2024 explanation named development challenges, a flight-test pause and the work stoppage. Its September 2024 filing supplied additional program detail: the company said a cracked engine thrust link was found on a flight-test aircraft in August, prompting a pause in flight testing, and that the work stoppage affected the resumption of flight activities. These are Boeing’s stated explanations, not an independent finding about the causes of the delay. Boeing’s September 2024 SEC filing

The filing also identified certification requirements and timing, incorporating changes on completed aircraft, labor and production disruption, supply-chain disruption, customer delivery timing and negotiations, production-rate adjustments, and accounting-quantity changes as factors affecting program profitability. Those disclosures help explain why the schedule and financial outlook are linked, but they do not establish an independently measured total cost of the delay across the aviation industry.

What certification progress has Boeing reported?

In its second-quarter 2026 results, Boeing said the FAA had approved the 777X to begin certification flight testing under Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) 4B during that quarter. In a July 16, 2026 program update, Boeing reported that the 777-9 test fleet had accumulated more than 4,800 flight hours and roughly 1,700 flights, with half of planned certification testing complete. These are company-reported figures and progress measures, not proof that certification is complete. Boeing’s second-quarter 2026 results; Boeing’s July 16, 2026 program update

Boeing said remaining work included TIA 5 and ETOPS-focused TIAs, ETOPS demonstrations and certification deliverables. Mike Sinnett, Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ senior vice president of Product Strategy, Product Development and Development Programs, described the company’s priority as: “Certainty is more important than flow.” That statement reflects Boeing’s view of schedule management; it does not independently verify that the 2027 target will be met.
