Forbes/Trefis reported that Boeing shares fell 6% in extended trading on June 12, 2025, after news that Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8, had crashed. That was an immediate, historical market reaction—not a current stock quote, proof the crash alone caused the move, or evidence of a lasting decline.
What happened to Boeing stock after the crash?
A Forbes/Trefis article published June 12, 2025, reported that Boeing shares dropped 6% in extended trading after the crash news. The report captures a reaction at that moment; it does not establish how the stock performed in later regular trading or how much of the move was attributable to the accident. Forbes/Trefis’s June 12 report is therefore best read as a dated snapshot, not an investment signal or a current price.
Which crash does the headline refer to?
Air India Flight AI171 was a scheduled passenger service from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, operated by Boeing 787-8 VT-ANB. India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) records the accident on June 12, 2025, at about 0809 UTC (13:39 IST), during the aircraft’s initial climb. The aircraft and flight details come from the agency’s preliminary investigation report.
Does the reported drop show that the crash caused Boeing shares to fall?
It shows that a financial-news report described a 6% decline in extended trading after the crash news. The timing is consistent with investors reacting to the event, but that single observation does not prove the crash was the sole cause of the move. Nor does it show whether the reaction endured: that would require later regular-session prices and a comparison over the same dates with a suitable broad-market or aerospace benchmark.

What is known about the cause?
The AAIB preliminary report identifies the aircraft, flight, time, and phase of flight; those particulars are not a final explanation of why the crash occurred. The contemporaneous Forbes/Trefis article said the cause was unknown when it was published. The AAIB’s public updates page lists an interim statement on the investigation’s progress, but the materials available here do not establish a final cause. Do not treat the stock reaction, preliminary details, or company safety statements as an accident finding.
The AAIB says that “the sole objective of the investigations carried out by AAIB is prevention of accidents and incidents and not to apportion blame or liability.” Its preliminary report also records that the US National Transportation Safety Board appointed an accredited representative and technical advisers from Boeing, GE, and the Federal Aviation Administration to assist with the investigation.

How should investors interpret the headline?
- Separate the event from the investment conclusion. A reported after-hours move is not a valuation analysis or a prediction of future returns.
- Use dates and trading sessions. The 6% figure refers to extended trading after the June 12, 2025 news, not Boeing’s current performance.
- Wait for verified investigation findings before drawing causal conclusions. Neither the market move nor the preliminary report establishes the crash’s cause.
- For a lasting-impact assessment, compare equivalent periods. Check Boeing’s subsequent regular-session performance against an appropriate market or aerospace benchmark; the reported 6% alone cannot answer that question.
