Federal mediation became part of Boeing Defense, Space & Security workers’ 2025 strike in the St. Louis area, but the first reported session did not produce a deal. Talks resumed in October, and a settlement agreement dated October 23 set out conditions for ending the strike and returning employees to work. The negotiations are a historical dispute, not evidence of an active strike in October 2026.
When federal mediation entered the Boeing strike
IAM District 837 workers began striking at Boeing’s St. Louis-area defense operations on August 4, 2025, according to Spectrum News. On September 9, the union bargaining committee and Boeing met with a federal mediator for the first time during the strike. The session lasted four hours and ended without an agreement.
The union committee said it was “proposing solutions to find a viable answer to the work stoppage.” The committee also accused Boeing of not being serious about ending the strike; that was the union’s assessment, not an independently established finding.
Boeing executive Dan Gillian, identified by Spectrum News as the company’s Air Dominance vice president and general manager and senior St. Louis site executive, said the company hoped mediation would help bring its “3,200 teammates back to work.” That number was Gillian’s contemporaneous description, not a separately verified headcount. Gillian also said the union was asking for “more of everything” and called that approach unconstructive. Those remarks reflected Boeing’s position.

Why the sides disagreed over the economic terms
When Boeing Defense and IAM District 837 returned to mediated talks on October 20, 2025, their accounts of the offers remained far apart. Boeing said its offers were the largest it had made to this union. The union argued that other Boeing unions had received better terms. Spectrum News reported these as the parties’ competing positions, not as an independently audited comparison of contracts or offers.
The union said it hoped returning to mediation would lead to “meaningful progress and a fair resolution,” and that it was ready to reach an agreement and return members to work building military aircraft and defense systems.

What the October 23 settlement provided
The written settlement agreement, dated October 23, 2025, tied ending the strike to ratification of the 2025–2030 collective bargaining agreement. Upon ratification, the union would terminate the strike and picketing. The agreement also set out return-to-work protections and timing:
- Employees would return to their same shift and job classification.
- No IAM District 837 member would be displaced by employees hired during the strike.
- Return to work would begin with third shift on November 2, 2025.
These are the terms documented in the agreement; they explain the planned end of the work stoppage and return process rather than establishing any later developments.

What federal mediation did—and did not—mean
Mediation brought the parties together with a federal mediator to support negotiations. The September 9 meeting was a process step, not a settlement: it lasted four hours and ended without a deal. The subsequent October talks and settlement show why a mediator’s presence should not be mistaken for a resolution at the first meeting.
The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service describes its role in convening parties with a federal mediator and supporting a return to negotiations in a September 13, 2024 release. That release concerned a separate Boeing-IAM dispute in 2024, so it provides general context about the agency, not an announcement about the 2025 St. Louis negotiations: FMCS release.
