Boeing reported on March 23, 2026, that the FAA had certified a higher maximum takeoff weight for the 787-9 and 787-10. The rating gives airlines a choice: use the added weight capacity for more payload or trade it for additional range. Boeing said the first aircraft with the capability were progressing through delivery activities, but did not give a first-delivery date. Air New Zealand was named among the early 787-9 operators.
What the increased takeoff weight changes
The change is a higher maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) rating for existing 787-9 and 787-10 aircraft, not a new Dreamliner variant or a cargo-conversion program. MTOW is the maximum permitted weight of an aircraft at takeoff. A higher rating gives an airline more room to balance the aircraft’s payload and fuel for a particular mission.
Boeing’s March 23, 2026 announcement says the FAA certified the increased rating. The certification claim and performance estimates below are attributed to Boeing; the announcement does not supply a separate FAA approval record. Boeing’s announcement
How much extra payload or range Boeing estimates
Boeing describes the payload and range figures as alternatives. An airline can use the added weight margin for more payload, or use it to carry more fuel and extend range; it should not assume it can achieve both maximum gains on the same flight. Actual results depend on the aircraft’s configuration, route, payload and operating conditions.

| Model | Boeing-reported MTOW increase | Approximate payload option | Approximate range option | Published baseline range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 787-9 | About 10,000 lb (4,540 kg) | About 3 metric tons more | More than 300 nautical miles (560 km) farther | Up to 8,300 nautical miles |
| 787-10 | About 14,000 lb (6,350 kg) | About 5 metric tons more | More than 400 nautical miles (740 km) farther | Up to 7,500 nautical miles |
The MTOW increases and payload/range estimates are approximate figures reported by Boeing in 2026. Baseline ranges are Boeing’s published specifications, accessed in 2026; they are maximum manufacturer figures, not guaranteed distances for every payload or route. Which model benefits, and how an airline might use it
787-9: payload flexibility or longer missions
Boeing estimates that the 787-9’s roughly 10,000-pound higher rating can support about 3 metric tons of extra payload or more than 300 nautical miles of additional range. For an airline, the payload option could mean carrying more passengers’ baggage or freight on a flight where weight is limiting. The range option could provide more flexibility on a long route, subject to the aircraft’s load and operating conditions.

787-10: more payload or a larger range extension
Boeing estimates roughly 14,000 pounds of additional MTOW for the 787-10, corresponding to about 5 metric tons of extra payload or more than 400 nautical miles of added range. Its published baseline range is lower than the 787-9’s, but the higher rating may suit an airline seeking more payload capacity or additional reach from this model. Neither version is universally better: the useful choice depends on the airline’s network, payload demand, route length and costs.
When aircraft can use the higher rating
Boeing says all 787-9 and 787-10 aircraft assembled as of December 2025 are structurally capable of the higher weight. Structural capability does not mean every aircraft automatically operates at the new rating: an airline can choose to activate it on delivery or later. Boeing says the certified operating weight is designated for each aircraft, and the chosen weight can affect airport fees as well as route planning.

In its March 2026 update, Boeing said the first aircraft with the capability were moving through ticketing and delivery activities. That is a status update, not a firm promise of a delivery or service date for every customer. Boeing identified Air New Zealand as among the early customers for the 787-9 version. Its announcement did not specify a first-delivery date or aircraft registration.

The additional capability is an airline operating option, not a promise that a passenger will see a particular flight become nonstop or that a specific shipment will be accepted. Airlines decide whether the payload or range margin is more valuable on each aircraft and route. A longer-range configuration could support route planning, while a payload-focused configuration could allow more weight to be carried; the specific outcome depends on an airline’s aircraft, schedule and operating choices.
