The 300,000-square-foot facility was intended to manufacture interior components for the company’s 787 program and supply Boeing South Carolina’s nearby aircraft operation.
What the South Carolina facility makes
Boeing said the Interiors Responsibility Center South Carolina would produce cabin and crew-area components for the 787, including:
- Stowbins, closets, partitions and class dividers
- Floor-mounted stowbins used by flight attendants
- Overhead rests for flight crews and flight attendants
- Video-control stations and attendant modules
The facility was part of Boeing’s planned 787 production system in North Charleston, rather than a retail supplier of aircraft parts. Boeing’s December 1, 2011 opening announcement described its intended products and role.
When it opened and where it is
Boeing announced the opening on December 1, 2011, in North Charleston, South Carolina. The company reported that the building covered 300,000 square feet (27,871 square meters). Its July 15, 2010 announcement placed the planned fabrication factory 10 miles (16 km) from the 787 final assembly and delivery site in North Charleston.

What Boeing expected in 2010 and 2011
The company’s announcements described expectations, not independently verified outcomes. In July 2010, Boeing said the planned factory was expected to create more than 150 jobs. At the December 2011 opening, Boeing said it looked forward to making its first deliveries to Boeing South Carolina in 2012. That statement recorded the company’s expectation at the time; it does not establish when deliveries actually began.

Boeing’s 2011 opening release also credited Pattillo Construction’s crew with completing more than 500,000 labor-hours without a lost-time accident. That is Boeing’s account of the construction work.
How the facility fits into later South Carolina expansion
On November 7, 2025, Boeing marked the groundbreaking of an expansion at its South Carolina site that included additions to the Interiors Responsibility Center. The same release said Boeing South Carolina was set to increase production to 10 787 airplanes per month in 2026. That figure is a target stated in the 2025 announcement, not confirmation that the rate was subsequently reached.
