Boeing Machinists End 2024 Strike After Accepting 38% Wage Increase

About 33,000 Boeing machinists ended their 53-day strike on November 4, 2024, after 59% of members who cast ballots approved the company’s fourth formal offer. It provides a 38% general wage increase over four years; the union described the increase’s compounded value as more than 43% over the agreement’s life. Those are different ways of expressing the raise, not competing figures.

What did Boeing machinists get in the accepted offer?

The accepted offer called for a 38% general wage increase over four years. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) described the compounded value as more than 43% over the agreement’s life. The 38% is the stated increase; the larger figure reflects compounding, so they should not be treated as separate raises.

Boeing’s October 8 announcement about a tentative agreement also described increased company retirement contributions, lower employee medical cost sharing, and work-life-balance improvements. That announcement concerned a tentative offer; the available reporting does not establish the detailed eligibility rules or implementation terms of the final executed contract.

How did the strike end?

The strike began September 13, 2024, after workers rejected an earlier company offer. After another proposal featuring a 35% general wage increase was rejected by 64% of voters, Boeing made a fourth formal offer. On November 4, 59% of members who voted approved it, and picket lines came down. The stoppage had lasted 53 days. The Associated Press reported the vote and strike outcome.

What workers sought—and what they did not secure

IAM’s original demands included 40% raises over three years and restoration of the traditional pension plan. The accepted offer did not restore that pension plan, according to AP. The agreement therefore ended the dispute without meeting that central retirement demand.

AP reported a $12,000 ratification bonus in its October 31 account of the latest offer context. That report does not, on its own, establish the final executed contract’s payment terms, so the bonus should not be assumed to have applied to every worker or paid on a particular schedule.

Why the stoppage mattered to Boeing production

The striking machinists assembled 737 MAX, 777, and 767 cargo aircraft at Boeing facilities in Renton and Everett, Washington. The walkout halted production of most of Boeing’s airline jets. Ratification cleared the way for the company to restart idled Pacific Northwest assembly lines, but the vote alone does not establish when any particular line returned to a specific production rate. AP’s account of the strike’s end describes the production impact. Boeing’s October 8 announcement summarized the tentative agreement’s pay, benefits, and work-life-balance elements.
