Their rankings reflect different testing and criteria. This guide compares six services using those publishers’ reported findings and dated price snapshots; it is not a report of testing conducted for this article.

Which service should you choose?
For a general-purpose subscription: ButcherBox
Fortune and NBC Select name ButcherBox their overall pick. Its assortment spans several meats and seafood, with frozen delivery and shipping included in the box price, according to Fortune. The medium-box figure in Fortune’s comparison is about $182; NBC Select reports a broader box-price range of $179–$319. Those are separate publisher snapshots, not a promise of the price at checkout. NBC Select says delivery excludes Alaska and Hawaii. It also reports, based on information from the brand, that ButcherBox’s grass-fed and grass-finished beef comes from Australia.
For choice and customization: Good Chop
Fortune selects Good Chop for customization, and Reviewed names it best overall. Fortune reports that subscribers can choose deliveries every four, six, or eight weeks and select from beef, pork, chicken, lamb, and seafood. Its reported medium-box price is $149, with shipping listed separately at about $9.99. Reviewed’s overall rating is its editorial judgment, not a guarantee that every customer will prefer the service.

For butcher-style beef and pork: Porter Road
Fortune highlights Porter Road for butcher-style boxes, while Reviewed includes it as a pick for beef and pork. Its selection also includes lamb and chicken. Fortune’s medium-box snapshot is $170, but it says both price and shipping depend on order size. Porter Road’s official page lists box prices from $99 to $210 and says customers can skip, cancel, or change a box; live prices and available products may change.
For a one-time order: Backyard Butchers
Fortune names Backyard Butchers its one-time-delivery pick. It offers à la carte orders as well as a subscribe-and-save option, so check that the cart reflects a one-time purchase if you do not want recurring deliveries. Fortune reports free shipping and an approximately $213 subscription-box price; it does not state a comparable à la carte basket price.

For a family mix: Meatzy
Fortune’s family pick, Meatzy, offers beef, pork, chicken, and seafood. Fortune reports a $169 medium box and free shipping. That price is a dated editorial snapshot; compare the actual box contents and delivered checkout total with what your household will use.
For à la carte specialty shopping: Crowd Cow
Crowd Cow offers both individual-product ordering and subscriptions, making it a useful option when you want to choose specific cuts instead of accepting a preset box. Fortune reports free shipping on orders over $149, while the total price depends on the products selected. Crowd Cow’s own 2026 comparison describes relationships with more than 50 farms and fisheries, farm-level traceability, and more than 200 wild-caught seafood items. Those are vendor-published claims, not independently established figures in the comparisons summarized here.

What matters beyond the box price?
Calculate the delivered cost for the food you will use
A box price alone does not tell you what dinner will cost. Add shipping where it applies, check the delivery frequency, and compare the included cuts and quantities with your household’s needs. The figures above come from Fortune’s 2026 comparison unless otherwise noted; they are point-in-time snapshots and may not match current checkout prices. For Crowd Cow, the total varies with the products chosen rather than a comparable preset medium box.
Check whether you are placing a one-time order or starting a subscription
Backyard Butchers and Crowd Cow support à la carte ordering as well as subscription options. Good Chop uses recurring deliveries at four-, six-, or eight-week intervals. Fortune describes ButcherBox, Porter Road, and Meatzy as flexible subscriptions. Before paying, confirm the order type, delivery interval, and how to skip or cancel through the service’s current terms.
Rank #4
Match selection to how you cook
These services are not interchangeable. ButcherBox and Crowd Cow include seafood in their reported ranges, while Porter Road’s listed selection emphasizes meat. Good Chop also includes seafood and lamb. If you want specialty items such as Wagyu, Fortune lists them for Good Chop and Crowd Cow; availability can vary. Choose based on the cuts and proteins you will actually prepare, not the length of a catalog.
Make sure delivery works where you live and fits your freezer
Shipping availability, fees, and inventory can change. NBC Select reports that ButcherBox excludes Alaska and Hawaii; do not assume that one service’s coverage applies to another. Fortune describes ButcherBox and Good Chop deliveries as frozen. Check current checkout eligibility for your address and make room for the shipment before ordering.

Why 2026 rankings differ
Fortune’s May 26, 2026 comparison, updated August 26, reports testing six services and assigns different picks by use case: ButcherBox overall, Good Chop for customization, Porter Road for butcher-style boxes, Backyard Butchers for one-time delivery, Meatzy for families, and Crowd Cow for grass-fed selection. Reviewed’s February 27, 2026 roundup names Good Chop best overall, Crowd Cow best for variety, Snake River Farms its premium upgrade, and Porter Road its beef-and-pork pick. NBC Select also names ButcherBox overall. Food Network’s September 2, 2026 guide names Rastelli’s overall and describes curated and build-your-own options with continental U.S. shipping.
These are distinct publishers’ editorial selections, not a shared industry ranking or results from tests conducted for this article. Reviewed’s Snake River Farms pick is an alternative for shoppers seeking American Wagyu and premium cuts; Food Network’s Rastelli’s pick is another option if curated or build-your-own boxes appeal. The comparisons do not establish that any one service is objectively best for every shopper.
Is a meat subscription box worth it?
It can be worthwhile if the box contains cuts you regularly cook, the delivered total fits your food budget, and the schedule suits your freezer and meal planning. It is less attractive if you would pay for unwanted items, struggle to use the shipment before the next delivery, or need a one-time purchase but select a recurring plan. Compare the delivered price with what you would otherwise buy for the same meals; the publisher snapshots here do not establish a general savings figure.
Can you try a meat delivery service without committing?
Yes, where the service offers à la carte ordering. Fortune identifies Backyard Butchers and Crowd Cow as offering one-time orders alongside subscription options. For other services, confirm the current checkout choices and cancellation terms before placing an order; a flexible subscription is still recurring unless you change or cancel it.
