That dated milestone supports calling the 777 one of the most successful widebody aircraft families historically. It does not establish that the 777 is the current number-one widebody: Boeing reports the original 777 and 777X separately, and available figures do not provide a like-for-like ranking across all competing families.
What does “2,000+ orders” mean?
Boeing’s January 8, 2019 announcement said the 777 program had exceeded 2,000 orders since launch, reaching the milestone in December 2018. The announcement also reported 51 net orders for the 777 family in 2018, with freighter sales driving that year’s result. These are historical figures, not a current program total. Boeing’s 2018 orders and deliveries announcement.
Order totals need a date and a definition. In its filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Boeing listed the original 777 program and 777X separately. It defines cumulative firm orders as deliveries plus undelivered firm orders:
| Program in Boeing’s June 30, 2026 filing | Cumulative firm orders | Undelivered firm orders |
|---|---|---|
| 777 | 1,826 | 35 |
| 777X | 591 | 591 |
These are Boeing’s program-specific figures as of June 30, 2026, not a single undifferentiated family total. Adding the two cumulative totals would combine separately reported programs; it would not be the same measure as Boeing’s 2018 “more than 2,000” milestone. Is the 777 the most popular widebody?
It depends on what “popular” means. The word can refer to lifetime orders, aircraft delivered, planes still in service, number of operators, or recent sales. Those measures describe different things, and the evidence available here does not provide a complete comparison of every widebody family using one definition and one cutoff date.
The historical order milestone and the 777-300ER’s large active fleet support describing the 777 as one of the most successful and widely used widebody families. They do not prove a current first-place ranking across all widebodies. For a fair ranking, compare the same measure for each family and use consistent family boundaries and dates.

What the 777-300ER’s active fleet shows
A July 2026 market report, reproducing REDBOOK Fleet+ figures, counted 745 active passenger-configured 777-300ERs operated by 45 airlines. That is a model-specific fleet snapshot, not a count of every 777 variant or a ranking against all other widebodies. The report said the variant had received no new order since 2019, except for a transferred aircraft built in 2020. July 2026 SEC-filed market report.
How the 777X changes the picture
The 777X is Boeing’s next-generation 777 program, but it had not completed certification or begun deliveries as of Boeing’s June 30, 2026 filing. Boeing said it had received FAA approval to begin the fourth phase of certification flight testing in the first half of 2026 and expected approval for the final phases in the second half. It also said it was working with its supplier and the FAA on a solution to an engine durability issue identified in 2025.

Boeing’s filing forecast first delivery of the 777-9 in 2027, the 777-8 Freighter about two years after the first 777-9 delivery, and no passenger 777-8 delivery before 2030. These are company expectations subject to certification, not guaranteed service dates. The July 2026 market report separately counted 541 net 777-9 orders as of May 31, 2026. That variant-specific figure has a different cutoff date from Boeing’s June 30 program totals, so it should not be treated as directly interchangeable with them.

Orders can surge or shift among manufacturers and models over time. The July 2026 market report said 751 widebodies were ordered in 2023, compared with 348 in 2019, citing Boeing Commercial and Airbus Orders and Deliveries. It also reported large 2025 orders across Airbus A330 and A350 and Boeing 777X and 787 variants, nearly 75 orders for the 787-10 during 2026, and more than 100 orders for the 777X in the preceding 12 months. These are time-bounded market indicators, not a lifetime or active-fleet comparison.

The report listed 367 A350-1000 orders as of June 30, 2026, alongside 541 net 777-9 orders as of May 31, 2026. Because these are for different variants and dates, they do not establish which widebody family has more orders overall. A reliable comparison would need consistent family-level totals, deliveries, active fleet and recent order momentum, all measured on common terms.
