Dryness and a compromised-feeling skin barrier
Look for a formula combining moisture-support ingredients. SELF describes humectants such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which attract water; emollients such as ceramides or fatty acids, which soften skin; and occlusives, which help reduce moisture loss. Those ingredient roles offer a practical way to compare labels, but do not establish that one product works best for everyone.

Using retinol and exfoliating lotions more cautiously
The American Academy of Dermatology advises beginning retinoids gradually, using moisturizer, and protecting skin from sun exposure. It states: “Retinoids should not be used during pregnancy.” If you have dry or inflamed skin, a history of irritation, or questions about whether a retinoid is appropriate, ask a qualified clinician. Avoid applying an irritating product to broken or already inflamed skin, and discontinue use if irritation is significant or persistent.
When adding an exfoliating acid or retinol, introduce one active product at a time rather than layering several new products at once. Follow the product label, and seek dermatological advice for persistent lesions, severe symptoms, or a concern that needs diagnosis rather than cosmetic care.

Cosmetic claims and U.S. regulation
In the United States, a lotion’s regulatory status depends on its intended use and claims. The FDA explains that ordinary moisturizing or appearance claims are generally cosmetic claims, while sunscreen products are drugs under U.S. law. The agency states, “Under U.S. law, cosmetic products and ingredients do not need FDA approval before they go on the market.” Companies and individuals marketing cosmetics nevertheless remain legally responsible for product safety. A cosmetic claim should not be mistaken for proof that a product treats a disease or reverses skin aging.
