BMW offers paid digital services and, in some markets, lets owners pay to activate eligible vehicle functions after purchase. That does not mean every BMW feature is subscription-locked: what you can buy depends on the car’s equipment and software, your country, and the offer shown for your vehicle.
What BMW means by subscriptions and “Functions on Demand”
BMW’s ConnectedDrive services include digital products that may be sold for a one-time or recurring payment. In the UK, BMW’s terms describe BMW Digital Premium as access to digital content and in-car features; possible inclusions include apps, extended navigation and parking assistance, personal-assistance functions, settings, and data connectivity. The package depends on the car’s operating system and the current offer. BMW says to check availability in the ConnectedDrive Store after linking the vehicle identification number (VIN) to a BMW ID. BMW UK ConnectedDrive terms, revised 10 October 2025.
Functions on Demand is a different but related idea: BMW has offered eligible customers the option to select certain functions after buying a vehicle, sometimes with a trial period followed by a paid term. BMW’s announcement says functions purchased as factory equipment remain available without an additional charge. Its examples explain the model, but do not establish that a particular function is offered now in every market. BMW Group’s Functions on Demand announcement.
Does BMW make you pay monthly for heated seats?
There is no universal answer supported across BMW models and markets. The sources do not establish that heated seats—or any other specific feature—are currently sold by subscription everywhere. Check the exact feature against your car’s VIN and the local ConnectedDrive Store offer; distinguish equipment you paid for at the factory from an eligible function offered later.

Which BMW features are subscriptions?
There is no fixed global list. BMW Digital Premium can bundle digital content and services, while Functions on Demand has covered selected vehicle functions. Package contents and eligible functions vary with the model, equipment, technical capacity, software, market regulations, and current offer. A feature name alone is not enough to establish availability or whether it is a subscription rather than factory equipment.
Does your car already have the hardware?
Not necessarily. BMW Australia’s terms say some activated functionality depends on the correct operation of vehicle hardware and software. A payment or software activation is not proof that every car has the hardware needed for a function. BMW’s Functions on Demand description also makes eligibility dependent on technical requirements and equipment. Check the car-specific offer and equipment before budgeting for an upgrade. How much does BMW ConnectedDrive cost?
There is no single current price for all owners. BMW says costs are shown during booking, and eligibility and service content vary by car and market. For the relevant offer, link your BMW ID and vehicle, then review the ConnectedDrive Store or purchase flow for that VIN. BMW Australia lists a BMW ID, linked vehicle, and payment details among purchase conditions. BMW Australia ConnectedDrive terms.
For historical context only, BMW Group gave a Germany example in a 2023 model-update announcement: €9.98 per month, a provisional annual fee of €99, and a three-month free trial. Those were launch-era figures, not current prices for every service or market. BMW Group, 2023.

How to decide whether a paid feature is worth it
Compare the actual offer with what you already bought, rather than treating a monthly price in isolation. Before accepting, check:
- Whether the feature is already included as factory equipment in your vehicle.
- Whether your model, equipment, hardware, and software qualify for the offered function.
- The one-time or recurring payment, renewal and cancellation terms, and any trial conditions shown at checkout.
- The total cost over the period you expect to own or use the car, compared with the applicable factory-purchase option, if one is offered.
BMW’s UK and Australian terms describe varying services and booking conditions; they do not establish one cancellation rule for all services and countries. Use the terms attached to the particular offer rather than assuming a subscription can be cancelled on the same basis everywhere. BMW’s UK terms also say availability and detail can differ by model, technical capacity, and market regulations. BMW UK ConnectedDrive terms and BMW Australia ConnectedDrive terms.

BMW CarData is a separate service category
BMW CarData is a partner ecosystem, not a way for drivers to buy ConnectedDrive subscriptions. BMW says European Economic Area service providers can register to build services using connected-vehicle data, with customer agreement required for data sharing. BMW also says providers pay for data actually accessed and received, and that available capabilities depend on the vehicle; the latest recorded data is not a real-time direct request to the car.
