Blue Origin announced on February 13, 2025, that it planned to cut about 10% of its workforce. CEO Dave Limp’s employee email cited rapid hiring, added bureaucracy and a need to focus on manufacturing output and launch cadence. The announcement is historical; it is not a report of a new 2026 layoff.
What Blue Origin announced
In a message to employees, CEO Dave Limp said Blue Origin had decided to reduce its workforce by about 10%. GeekWire reported the announcement on February 13, 2025, and reproduced the memo. GeekWire said notifications were due to be sent that morning; the Associated Press reported on February 14 that notifications were going out Friday. Those reports differ on the timing of delivery, so the announcement date should not be confused with a confirmed notification date for every employee.
GeekWire estimated the cuts would affect roughly 1,400 people out of nearly 14,000 employees. That was a contemporary media estimate, not an official headcount or final separation total. The AP noted that privately held Blue Origin does not disclose its employment figures. The company’s stated figure was about 10%.
What the memo said about the reason for the cuts
Limp connected the restructuring to Blue Origin’s 2025 operating plan and growth strategy. He said the company needed to scale manufacturing output and increase launch cadence, while operating with greater speed, decisiveness and customer focus. He attributed the need for organizational changes to rapid hiring that, in his view, had brought more bureaucracy and less focus than the company needed.

“We grew and hired incredibly fast in the last few years, and with that growth came more bureaucracy and less focus than we needed.”
That is the CEO’s stated explanation, not independently established proof that rapid hiring caused the restructuring. The announcement followed New Glenn’s first successful launch by a few weeks. The AP reported that the rocket reached orbit on its first try, but the available reporting does not say that launch caused the workforce reduction.

Which employees and roles were mentioned
Coverage identified some positions in engineering, research and development, and program or project management, as well as a plan to thin management layers. The reports do not provide a complete list of affected teams, locations or individual jobs, so the announced categories should not be treated as an exhaustive roster.
What employees were told about notifications and support
The memo said affected employees would receive notices by work and personal email, while employees not affected would also be notified. It said notices would include information about severance packages, COBRA coverage, career support services and counseling through the Employee Assistance Program. The memo’s description does not establish specific terms, duration, eligibility rules or service providers.

Did Blue Origin say it would stop hiring?
No. Limp’s memo said Blue Origin would continue investing and planned to hire hundreds of people in priority areas. That was a forward-looking statement made in February 2025; it does not establish how many people were subsequently hired.
