On August 1, 2014, Bitcoin hardware maker BitFury announced that it was expanding into professional mining hosting and managed services, with a 20-megawatt facility in the Republic of Georgia at the center of the plan. It was a move beyond selling mining machines: BitFury was positioning itself to design hardware, deploy it, secure power, and operate or manage mining infrastructure. The announcement captures an early step in Bitcoin’s shift from hobbyist rigs to industrial-scale operations—not evidence of a current retail cloud-mining offer.

What BitFury announced in 2014

BitFury’s announcement, reported by Data Center Knowledge on August 1, 2014, described hosting mining equipment for professional clients and providing managed mining services through an expanding international network. The headline facility was rated at 20 MW and located in Georgia. The company said the Georgian site had been deployed in about 30 days; that rapid timetable is a contemporary company claim, not an independently measured construction record.

The timing matters. BitFury had announced a $20 million financing round in May 2014, and its Georgia facility was part of a broader expansion program rather than a project shown to have consumed the entire round. A contemporary financing report said the investors included Binary Financial, Crypto Currency Partners, Georgian Co-Investment Fund, Queensbridge Venture Partners, ZAD Investment Company, and individuals Bill Tai and Jonathan Teo. Reported uses included international facilities, next-generation ASIC development, servers, and adjacent opportunities.

What “cloud mining” meant in this case

In this 2014 announcement, “cloud mining” meant professional hosting and managed operations for mining companies. Data Center Knowledge named CryptX and DigitalBTC among BitFury’s customers. The coverage does not establish that BitFury was selling the same kind of small, fractional hash-rate contracts later associated with consumer cloud-mining promotions.

The distinction matters to personal-finance readers: a hosting provider manages equipment and facilities for a client, while a retail cloud-mining contract typically offers a consumer a specified share of mining capacity under a contract. The former is an infrastructure service; it does not, by itself, imply a consumer product or a guaranteed return. No current BitFury retail contract or public consumer price list is established by the cited material.

From chip supplier to vertically integrated miner

Founded in 2011, BitFury was known primarily for specialized Bitcoin mining chips and related servers. Bitcoin mining uses application-specific integrated circuits, or ASICs, designed to perform SHA-256 hashing efficiently. These machines compete to find valid blocks; their economics depend on hash rate, electricity cost, hardware efficiency and price, network difficulty, Bitcoin’s market price, uptime, and cooling.

A hardware maker that operates or hosts miners can connect several parts of that business:

  1. Design and supply ASIC chips.
  2. Assemble or supply mining servers.
  3. Deploy machines in power-dense facilities.
  4. Procure electricity and manage cooling and uptime.
  5. Mine directly or provide hosting and managed operations to clients.

This integration could help BitFury deploy new hardware quickly, observe performance in operating conditions, and earn revenue from services as well as equipment sales. The trade-off is a potential conflict: a supplier’s own mining operation competes with customers who buy its machines or rent its capacity. Mining also exposes the operator to Bitcoin-price swings, rising network difficulty, rapid equipment obsolescence, power-contract risk, and substantial capital needs.

BitFury said its chips powered a substantial portion of global Bitcoin mining; the contemporary account included a roughly 40 percent company estimate. That figure concerns the reported use of BitFury chips, not a verified estimate of the share of Bitcoin mined by BitFury itself.

What a 20 MW facility does—and does not—tell you

Megawatts measure power capacity, not Bitcoin output. If a 20 MW site drew its full rated load continuously, the arithmetic would be 480 MWh per day and 175.2 GWh per year. These are theoretical full-load calculations, not reported BitFury consumption. Actual energy use would depend on utilization, mining-machine draw, cooling and other auxiliary loads, maintenance, and power overhead.

The 20 MW headline does not establish the facility’s actual hash rate, number of machines, utilization, cooling efficiency, uptime, or Bitcoin production. Those figures would be needed—along with historical hardware efficiency and network conditions—to estimate output. Nor does a facility rating necessarily mean that all 20 MW was available to mining machines: cooling and supporting equipment also use power.

Inside a mining-focused data center

The 2014 report described BitFury’s “hashing centers” as high-density facilities built for mining rather than for general-purpose enterprise computing. Its account described dense racks, broad hot aisles, roof-level exhaust for hot air, and plastic barriers intended to prevent that air from mixing back into the cold aisle. The design relied mainly on air-based cooling and accepted lower redundancy than a conventional facility built for workloads that demand uninterrupted service.

That design reflects the workload. A mining machine can lose time during a power or equipment outage, but mining does not require the same low-latency access or fault tolerance as many banking, cloud-computing, and colocation workloads. Lower redundancy can reduce facility cost, while outages still reduce productive mining time. The trade-off is specific to the value and operating economics of the machines being hosted; it is not a general-purpose data-center model.

Why BitFury chose Georgia

Electricity economics were central. The original report highlighted Georgia’s comparatively low-cost power and BitFury’s use of electricity described as coming from clean-energy sources. That claim should not be read as proof that every unit of power consumed by the operation was emissions-free. A later academic account of Bitfury’s Georgian operations describes the importance of energy costs and cites research estimating that electricity can represent 90–95 percent of data-center expenditure in some circumstances; that is context, not a universal share for every facility.

Georgia also offered hydropower generation, existing industrial sites and utility infrastructure, and a government seeking technology investment. A scholarly retrospective places Bitfury’s first Georgian data center opening in July 2014, on the site of a former cotton mill in Gori. The contemporary 20 MW announcement should not be conflated with every later BitFury facility in the country: subsequent reporting and company materials discuss other sites and expansions.

Low-cost power is an advantage, not a guarantee of profit. Electricity contracts, network access, local regulation, machine efficiency, Bitcoin’s price, and the pace of difficulty changes all affect whether a mine remains viable. Concentrating operations in one region can also make a business more exposed to local infrastructure or policy changes.

Who used the service?

The contemporary account named CryptX and DigitalBTC. CryptX’s PetaMine operation was reported at the time as controlling about 2 percent of global Bitcoin hash rate; that is a historical figure attributed to the contemporary report, not a current statistic. DigitalBTC also had a separate hardware supply relationship with BitFury, described in coverage of the companies’ 2014 announcement.

These examples reinforce the professional orientation of the service. They do not establish its contract terms, how much customer-owned equipment was hosted, or what share of the facility BitFury operated for its own account.

The wider 2014 mining arms race

BitFury was not the only hardware company moving toward large-scale operations. The 2014 report also described CoinTerra building a 20 MW data center in Canada while using third-party data-center providers, including through a colocation arrangement with CenturyLink Technology Solutions. The contrast illustrates two approaches: owning or managing more of the mining infrastructure, as BitFury proposed, or combining large deployments with outside colocation.

Each approach had costs. Owning facilities offered more control over power, cooling, and deployment, but required capital and brought real-estate, utility, and operating risk. Colocation could speed expansion and reduce facility investment, but added hosting fees and dependence on a provider’s uptime, maintenance, and financial health. Selling ASICs alone was more asset-light, though hardware demand could weaken when mining economics turned against buyers.

What happened after the Georgia announcement

BitFury’s infrastructure ambitions continued after 2014. In 2015, the company announced another $20 million financing round and discussed a planned 100 MW Georgian data center, alongside a broader infrastructure strategy and immersion-cooling work, as TechCrunch reported. The plan should be understood as a later ambition; it does not establish that a facility of that size was completed or that it was the same site as the 2014 center.

A later Bitfury company fact sheet listed facilities in Georgia, Iceland, Norway, and Canada and described proprietary immersion-cooling technology. The company’s own materials are useful for its stated footprint and technology, but should be read as first-party descriptions. A 2016 company announcement described a move toward a broader digital-asset platform, beyond mining alone.

Later corporate and regulatory records also connect Bitfury hardware and modular BlockBox data centers with subsequent mining businesses. Cipher Mining’s SEC filing documents purchases and relationships involving Bitfury equipment and infrastructure. Those links are not evidence that Cipher or other affiliated or successor businesses continued the 2014 hosting service on the same terms.

In a 2025 announcement, Bitfury described itself as having evolved from a Bitcoin miner into an investment firm and announced a $1 billion initiative. That is the company’s characterization of its strategy, not independent confirmation of the initiative’s results. Its current corporate direction is therefore better understood through its later company materials than through the 2014 cloud-mining announcement.

Why the move mattered

BitFury’s 2014 expansion showed that mining competitiveness was becoming a question of infrastructure as much as chip design. A miner needed efficient ASICs, affordable and reliable power, facilities suited to high-density heat loads, and the operational capacity to deploy equipment before it became obsolete. BitFury’s bet was to bring several of those elements under one roof while selling hosting and management to professional customers—a strategy with potential operating advantages, but also more capital, energy-market, and customer-conflict risk than hardware sales alone.
