Bitcoin’s August 2026 Flash Crash: What the Reported $108 Billion Drop Means

On August 22, 2026, crypto market capitalization reportedly fell by about $108 billion in six minutes, from roughly $2.68 trillion to $2.55 trillion. Bitcoin dropped to around $76,500 as liquidations surged. The figure describes a change in an estimate of the value of all crypto assets—not $108 billion in cash proven to have left the market, and not a loss attributable to Bitcoin alone.

What happened on August 22, 2026?

Coinpedia reported that the total cryptocurrency market value declined from about $2.68 trillion to $2.55 trillion over six minutes. Its report was published at 10:16 UTC on August 22; a related KuCoin item appeared at 11:53 UTC. The exact six-minute market-cap figure is a contemporaneous reported estimate: the sources available do not provide a preserved minute-by-minute data series with which to independently reconstruct it. Coinpedia’s report and KuCoin’s related item relay the account.

Why “wiped out” does not mean $108 billion was withdrawn

Market capitalization is an estimate based on asset prices and circulating supply. When prices fall, the estimated value of outstanding coins falls too; that calculation does not establish that an equivalent amount of cash was sold or withdrawn. The reported $108 billion refers to total crypto market capitalization, while Bitcoin’s price and derivatives liquidations are separate measures.

Bitcoin, liquidations, and other market measures

Coinpedia’s figures describe several related but distinct effects. Liquidations are forced closures of leveraged positions; they should not be added to the market-cap decline or treated as another measure of money leaving the market.

Measure Reported figure What it describes
Total crypto market capitalization About $2.68 trillion to $2.55 trillion, down roughly $108 billion in six minutes A reported change in estimated market value across crypto assets, not a cash-withdrawal total. Coinpedia, 2026.
Bitcoin price Fell to around $76,500 Bitcoin’s reported price level during the move. Coinpedia, 2026.
BTC long liquidations About $257.77 million Reported forced closures of Bitcoin long positions. Coinpedia, 2026.
Crypto liquidations About $1.71 billion across 281,846 traders in 24 hours CoinGlass figures relayed by Coinpedia; a derivatives measure over a 24-hour window. Coinpedia, 2026.
Open interest Down about $3.34 billion, or 5.18% A reported decline in outstanding derivatives positions, not the market-cap change. Coinpedia, 2026.
Ether About $2,426, with roughly $293.34 million in liquidations Reported price and liquidation figures for Ether. Coinpedia, 2026.
XRP Down about 12%, from $1.70 to $1.51, with roughly $121.71 million in liquidations Reported XRP price move and liquidations. Coinpedia, 2026.
TOTAL3 About $784 billion to $731 billion, down roughly $53 billion or 6.7% A market-cap measure excluding Bitcoin and Ether, indicating the reported decline extended to other tokens. Coinpedia, 2026.

What may have driven the sell-off?

Coverage described a reversal after a sharp rally: Bitcoin had risen from about $63,600 to $79,500 before turning lower. Coinpedia also reported that more than $4.5 billion in crypto long positions had been liquidated over the preceding four days. That four-day figure is a different time window from its $1.71 billion 24-hour liquidation figure. Coinpedia, 2026.

Forced liquidations, falling open interest, and broad declines are consistent with deleveraging during a fast sell-off. They do not, by themselves, prove what triggered it. The August 2026 reporting does not establish a definitive root cause, so claims that a single news event or market actor caused the move go beyond what these figures show.

Did Bitcoin recover afterward?

A CoinMarketCap historical snapshot for August 23, 2026, lists Bitcoin at $77,755.26, with a market capitalization of about $1.561 trillion and a 0.87% 24-hour gain. This daily snapshot indicates a higher BTC price and a positive 24-hour change at that time; it does not verify the six-minute low or the reported total-crypto market-cap drop. Is this the same crash as October 2025?

No. The title’s reported $108 billion move refers to August 22, 2026. October 10, 2025, was a separate crypto sell-off. ESMA’s 2026 risk report says that earlier event followed global trade tensions and gives estimated derivatives liquidations of $19 billion (equivalent to EUR 16.3 billion), while noting uncertainty in liquidation estimates and reports of exchange performance problems. Binance later attributed the broader October 2025 event primarily to macro risk, leverage, and thin liquidity, while also acknowledging platform-specific transfer and index issues, according to CoinDesk’s coverage. That is Binance’s retrospective account of the 2025 event—not an established explanation for August 2026. CoinDesk’s coverage of Binance’s account.

How to read a headline about a market wipeout

  • Check the time window: a six-minute market-cap change, a 24-hour liquidation total, and a four-day liquidation total are not interchangeable.
  • Check what is being measured: market capitalization estimates asset value; liquidation figures count forced derivatives closures; open interest tracks outstanding derivatives positions.
  • Check the market breadth: BTC, Ether, XRP, and TOTAL3 figures show whether the reported move was limited to Bitcoin or spread across other assets.
  • Separate observation from explanation: price declines and liquidations can describe what happened without identifying a proven cause.
