Bitcoin vs. Treasury Bills: Risks, Returns, and Liquidity

Treasury bills and Bitcoin behave very differently: a bill has a fixed maturity date and pays its face value at maturity, while Bitcoin has no promised payout and must be sold at whatever the market price is then. T-bills can offer a defined return if held to maturity; Bitcoin’s return depends on its price when you sell. Neither asset is automatically suitable for every cash need or time horizon.

How Treasury bills and Bitcoin work

Treasury bills have a maturity payment

Treasury bills are short-term U.S. government securities that mature in one year or less. TreasuryDirect lists regular terms from four weeks to 52 weeks. Bills are generally sold at a discount to face value or at par; at maturity, the holder receives the face value. The difference between a discounted purchase price and face value is the interest earned. TreasuryDirect’s bill overview explains these mechanics.

The return is set through an auction, so a TreasuryDirect buyer does not know the bill’s rate before the auction. The quoted discount rate is a convention for expressing the bill’s return, not a Bitcoin-style price change. Compare a bill’s stated return with another asset only after specifying its term, auction or purchase date, yield convention, and whether it was held to maturity. See TreasuryDirect’s auction and bill information.

Bitcoin has no maturity value

Bitcoin does not mature or promise a payment at a future date. Its value to an investor depends on the market price at the time of sale, which can be substantially higher or lower than the purchase price. The SEC describes Bitcoin as highly speculative and historically volatile in its investor guidance on crypto assets.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Are Treasury bills safer than Bitcoin?

“Safer” depends on the risk you mean. A bill held to maturity provides a defined face-value payment, which makes its nominal principal outcome more predictable than Bitcoin’s market value. Selling a bill before maturity can produce a different amount, and its market price may be above or below the amount due at maturity. Bitcoin, by contrast, has direct market-price exposure throughout the holding period and no contractual repayment.

This distinction does not make the two investments equivalent or remove every risk. A bill’s predictable maturity payment is different from protection against inflation or from a guaranteed price if you sell early. Bitcoin’s volatility can make it unsuitable for money you may need on a fixed date. The SEC warns that “The risk of loss for individual investors who participate in transactions involving crypto assets, including crypto asset securities, remains significant.” The bulletin discusses crypto-asset risks; that warning is not a forecast of Bitcoin’s future price.

Which has better returns, Bitcoin or T-bills?

There is no useful winner without a matched comparison period. A bill’s auction discount rate and Bitcoin’s price change are different measures. To compare realized results, choose the same start and end dates and state whether fees and taxes are included. For the bill, identify its term, auction or purchase date, yield convention, and whether it was held until maturity. For Bitcoin, state the exact purchase and sale dates and account for any trading fees or spread.

A bill held to maturity has a known face-value payment; Bitcoin’s sale value is unknown in advance. Past Bitcoin prices do not resolve what it will return over a future period, and no matched-period return comparison here establishes a historical winner. A headline rate for a new bill also cannot be compared directly with a Bitcoin return measured over a different span.

Can I sell a Treasury bill before it matures?

Yes. TreasuryDirect defines a marketable security as one that can be transferred and sold before maturity. A bill’s early-sale price may differ from the amount due at maturity, so the value you receive depends on market conditions when you sell. TreasuryDirect explains bill terms and sale options.

Bitcoin can also be sold, but the ability to trade is not the same as certainty about sale price or execution. Bitcoin trading liquidity depends on market conditions and the venue used. The available sources do not provide a directly comparable measure of market depth or transaction costs for Bitcoin and Treasury bills. Treasury regulation describes the Treasury securities market generally as the largest and most liquid securities market in the world, while noting that liquidity varies by instrument; that broad characterization is not a guarantee that every bill sale is frictionless or a head-to-head Bitcoin comparison. The regulation’s liquidity discussion is about the Treasury market generally.

Compare the risks that matter to your situation

  • When you need the money: Match the bill’s maturity to your cash need, or account for the possibility of a different sale price if you exit early. Bitcoin’s price at the time you need to sell is uncertain.
  • Price movement: A bill held to maturity pays face value; Bitcoin can rise or fall sharply during the holding period. The exact period matters when assessing any past return.
  • Access and execution: Consider how you would buy and sell each asset, and what fees or spreads apply. Liquidity does not guarantee a particular price.
  • Custody: Bitcoin ownership involves managing access to private keys yourself or relying on a third party. Each approach has distinct risks.
  • Taxes: TreasuryDirect says bill interest is federally taxable and exempt from state and local taxes. Bitcoin tax treatment is not established by the cited sources; do not assume the same treatment applies.

Bitcoin custody: self-managed keys or a third party

A crypto wallet manages private keys; it does not store Bitcoin itself. Losing access credentials can mean losing access to the assets. A cold wallet is typically a physical device that is less exposed to internet threats, but it can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Third-party custody may add provider-failure and access risks. The SEC outlines these custody considerations in its crypto-asset investor bulletin.

A hardware wallet is one possible form of cold storage, not a way to eliminate Bitcoin’s price risk. A physical device also creates the practical need to protect the device and recovery credentials. No particular wallet model or security guarantee follows from the general custody guidance.

Taxes on Treasury bills and Bitcoin

TreasuryDirect states that interest from Treasury bills is subject to federal income tax and exempt from state and local income taxes. See TreasuryDirect’s bill tax information. The cited sources do not establish Bitcoin’s tax treatment, which can depend on the facts and applicable rules; consult current tax guidance for your circumstances.
