Bitcoin and gold are both scarce assets that people describe as stores of value, but they are not equivalent. Gold has a much longer history, several sources of demand and established roles in investment and central-bank reserves. Bitcoin is a digital asset whose price is set by market supply and demand and has been substantially more volatile in the periods compared by the World Gold Council (WGC). Neither asset guarantees stable purchasing power or protection from loss.
What does “store of value” mean?
A store of value is an asset people expect to retain purchasing power over time. Scarcity can support that expectation, but it does not ensure it: demand, liquidity, price swings, access and the ability to hold an asset securely all matter. An asset can be scarce and still fall sharply in price or lose purchasing power over a chosen period.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes virtual currency as a digital representation of value that can function as a store of value, while noting that it is not legal tender and is not backed by a government or central bank. In the United States, the CFTC describes bitcoin as a commodity under the Commodity Exchange Act; that classification does not make its price stable or remove the risks of owning it. How do bitcoin and gold differ?
| Factor | Bitcoin | Gold |
|---|---|---|
| What supports demand | Market supply and demand for a digital asset; the CFTC says its value is completely derived from market forces. | Demand from jewelry, technology, investment and central banks. |
| History and institutional role | A digital market asset with a shorter history and no legal-tender status or central-bank backing, as described by the CFTC for virtual currency. | A long-standing physical asset with established investment and central-bank roles, as well as non-investment uses. |
| Price behavior in cited comparisons | WGC historical comparisons show substantially higher volatility and drawdown risk than gold over the periods studied. | Less volatile than bitcoin in those WGC comparisons, but still capable of losing value. |
| Ownership considerations | Exposure can involve platform, cyber, custody and market-integrity risks. | Physical bullion can involve premiums, fees, commissions, storage and seller risks. |
The table describes broad differences, not every way to invest. Directly holding bitcoin or physical bullion is not the same as holding a fund, futures contract or another intermediary product; the costs, protections and risks can differ.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Does scarcity make either asset a dependable store of value?
Bitcoin’s market price depends on demand as well as supply
The CFTC warns that virtual currencies are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies and says, “Their value is completely derived by market forces of supply and demand.” That means a constrained supply alone cannot tell an owner what bitcoin will be worth or how much purchasing power it will retain. [CFTC customer advisory]
Gold’s demand comes from several sources
Gold also has constrained supply, but its demand is spread across uses including jewelry, technology, investment and central-bank holdings. The WGC’s 2026 edition reports an average of 3,181 tonnes in annual net demand over the ten years ending in Q4 2025. That figure includes jewelry and technology net of recycling, bars and coins, ETFs and central-bank demand; it excludes over-the-counter demand because of data limitations. The WGC is a gold-industry association, so its market statistics should be read with that perspective in mind. [WGC Gold Demand Trends]

Which has been more volatile?
In the WGC’s historical comparisons, bitcoin had much higher volatility and downside risk than gold in the periods analyzed. Its 2024 authors characterize bitcoin’s performance and volatility as closer to technology stocks, and report that it tracked risk assets during selected market drawdowns. Those are source-specific historical findings, not a promise about what either asset will do in the next downturn. [WGC 2024 bitcoin and gold analysis]

Gold is not risk-free or consistently stable. The CFTC cautions that precious metals can be highly volatile and that past performance is not a good predictor of future returns. Its advisory is US consumer guidance; rules and protections vary by jurisdiction and by the product used. [CFTC precious-metals advisory]
Has gold protected purchasing power better?
The WGC’s 2026 edition reports that the US-dollar price of gold rose at an annualized 9% rate from the collapse of the US gold standard in 1971 through 31 December 2025, and outpaced US and world consumer-price inflation over that period. The same analysis reports an average 10% annual gold-price increase in years when US inflation was between 2% and 5%, based on annual changes from January 1971 through 31 December 2025. These are historical results for the WGC’s chosen benchmark and period, not forecasts or a guarantee that gold will hedge inflation over a shorter interval. [WGC 2026 gold outlook]

The sources cited here do not establish that bitcoin reliably protects purchasing power against inflation across all periods. Nor does the WGC’s gold evidence provide a synchronized bitcoin-versus-gold performance comparison through the end of 2025. A comparison of past returns needs the same start and end dates, currency and measurement method for both assets.
What risks come with owning each asset?
Bitcoin: market, platform and custody risks
- Price swings: Bitcoin’s volatility can make the value of a holding change substantially.
- Platform and market risks: The CFTC warns that many cash markets may not be regulated or supervised by a government agency and may lack customer protections; its advisory also flags cyber threats and manipulation. [CFTC customer advisory]
- Custody: How bitcoin is stored and who controls access are material ownership considerations. The cited guidance identifies custody among the risks, but does not establish that a particular platform or storage method is safe.
Physical gold: price, cost and seller risks
- Price loss: Gold prices can fall, and its historical long-run performance does not guarantee future returns.
- Transaction and holding costs: Physical bullion may involve premiums, fees, commissions and storage costs, which reduce an owner’s realized return.
- Seller conduct: The CFTC warns buyers to watch for seller misconduct and emphasizes that gold is not a safe investment. [CFTC precious-metals advisory]
Does adding bitcoin or gold improve a portfolio?
There is no universal answer: portfolio outcomes depend on the assets selected, the dates studied, the size of each allocation and how risk is measured. In its 2024 hypothetical portfolio analysis, the WGC found that a small bitcoin allocation improved risk-adjusted returns in its chosen historical simulation, while larger allocations increased portfolio risks. The authors conclude that bitcoin is not equivalent to or a substitute for gold in that analysis, citing increased volatility and returns comparable to high-risk equity assets. This is a historical backtest by a gold-industry research organization, not personalized investment advice or proof that the same result will recur. [WGC 2024 bitcoin and gold analysis]
