Gold is the better-established geopolitical hedge. It has a long record in official reserves and has generally risen during periods of high geopolitical risk and policy uncertainty. Bitcoin can sometimes behave like a hedge, but the evidence is inconsistent and its volatility can turn a crisis into a sharp loss. Neither asset is guaranteed to protect wealth in every war, sanctions episode or market panic; the better choice depends on the shock, time horizon, liquidity needs and whether you are comparing sovereign reserves, financial products or personal holdings.
What the comparison actually measures
“Geopolitical hedge” is not a single test. A war, a sanctions announcement, an inflation shock, a banking panic and a forced global liquidation can produce very different price reactions. An asset may preserve purchasing power over years yet fall alongside stocks during the first hours of a crisis. It may be liquid in a major market but difficult to access when payment rails, exchanges or custodians are disrupted.

- How did the asset behave during a particular shock?
- Is there institutional evidence that governments treat it as a reserve or safe haven?
- Can an investor access, custody and sell it when markets are stressed?
- Does its risk fit the investor’s liabilities and time horizon?
The available evidence does not establish a current, matched-period winner for Bitcoin versus gold across geopolitical events through October 13, 2026. The strongest conclusion is narrower: gold has the longer, better-documented institutional and historical case; Bitcoin remains a high-volatility asset whose safe-haven behavior is episodic rather than dependable.

Is Bitcoin a safe haven like gold?
Not on the evidence available here. The World Gold Council (WGC) describes Bitcoin as a “high-octane” tactical asset and says its safe-haven-like behavior has no consistent trend. Its exact wording is: “At times, market participants have noticed ‘safe haven-like’ behaviour in Bitcoin, as it has appeared to directionally move in a similar way to some traditional hedges, such as gold. However, there is no consistent trend.”
That distinction matters. A safe haven is normally expected to retain value, or at least hold up relatively well, when risk assets are under severe pressure. Bitcoin’s long-term scarcity narrative does not ensure short-term protection. It trades continuously, is highly sensitive to changes in liquidity and risk appetite, and can be sold by investors raising cash elsewhere in a crisis.
What the March 2020 episode shows
The WGC’s example from March 2020 is a useful warning, not a forecast. Bitcoin fell more than 40% from peak to trough and finished the month down 25%. Gold initially fell about 8% peak to trough, then recovered to its starting level by month-end. In that sell-off Bitcoin behaved more like US technology stocks than like gold.

Does gold protect against geopolitical risk?
Gold has the stronger historical record, subject to important qualifications. The European Central Bank’s Financial Stability Review (May 2025), using data from January 1997 through March 2025, states: “Gold generally offers a safe haven in times of stress, particularly during episodes of high geopolitical risk or policy uncertainty.” The ECB reports that gold prices tend to rise when geopolitical risk is elevated, while stocks and bonds tend to fall.
In combined extreme episodes—including the September 11 attacks, the onset of COVID-19 and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine—the ECB found that gold prices tended to rise alongside the US dollar as stocks and bonds declined. The finding is conditional, not a promise of a positive return every time. In more traditional financial-stress episodes, the ECB says sovereign bonds and the US dollar can perform even better than gold.

How large can the short-term response be?
In its December 2025 commentary, the WGC reports that “a 100pt increase Geopolitical Risk Index translates into 2.5% increase in the gold price.” This is an estimate attributed to the WGC, not a universal pricing rule. The council says longer-term effects depend on how persistent the event is and on channels including inflation, interest rates and the US dollar.
The associated WGC event chart defines an event as at least a 150-point daily rise in the index with no other occurrence within two weeks. It covers 19 events, divided into pre-2022 and post-2022 periods, with data through January 6, 2026. The methodology and event selection mean the 2.5% figure should not be multiplied mechanically for every headline or treated as a guaranteed return.
Gold’s institutional case: reserves, sanctions and trust
Gold’s most important advantage is not just its price history; it is the role governments already assign to it. The International Monetary Fund working paper Gold as International Reserves: A Barbarous Relic No More? (January 27, 2023), by Serkan Arslanalp, Barry J. Eichengreen and Chima Simpson-Bell, finds that central-bank gold holdings rose after the Global Financial Crisis.
The paper identifies 14 “active diversifiers.” These are countries that bought gold and increased gold’s share of total reserves by at least five percentage points over the preceding two decades. The authors associate reserve accumulation with safe-haven demand during economic, financial and geopolitical volatility, and with exposure to financial sanctions imposed by the United States, United Kingdom, European Union and Japan.
The paper reports that multilateral sanctions may have a larger association with gold accumulation than unilateral sanctions, because unilateral measures can leave a country a path to shift reserves into another country’s currency. These are observed reserve patterns and statistical associations. They are not proof that an individual’s gold is immune from seizure, restrictions, custody failures or market-access problems.
China’s reserve composition
In a May 7, 2024 speech, IMF First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath said China’s gold share of total foreign-exchange reserves rose from less than 2% in 2015 to 4.3% in 2023. She said: “This suggests that gold purchases by some central banks may have been driven by concerns about sanctions risk.”

That statistic describes China’s official reserves over stated years. It does not describe Chinese households, private investment returns or Bitcoin ownership. It does, however, illustrate why gold remains relevant to governments managing reserve concentration and geopolitical exposure.
What the reserve evidence does not prove
- It does not mean every gold bar is instantly accessible during a crisis.
- It does not eliminate vault, transporter, insurer, title or jurisdiction risk.
- It does not show that retail coins and bars behave exactly like central-bank reserves.
- It does not establish that gold will outperform cash, the dollar or high-quality government bonds in every stress episode.
Bitcoin versus gold across the key comparison points
| Comparison | Gold | Bitcoin | What an investor should infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Observed geopolitical behavior | The ECB reports gold generally performs well during high geopolitical risk and policy uncertainty; it rose in several combined extreme episodes. | The cited WGC analysis finds no consistent safe-haven trend; March 2020 brought a fall of more than 40% peak to trough and a 25% monthly loss. | Use the specific shock and measurement window, not a generic “crisis” label. |
| Institutional status | Held in official reserves and explicitly discussed by the ECB and IMF as a safe-haven or diversification asset. | The cited materials do not establish an equivalent central-bank reserve role. | Gold has a deeper institutional track record. |
| Volatility and drawdowns | Can fall during liquidity squeezes but historically showed steadier behavior in the cited episodes. | Described by the WGC as a high-volatility tactical asset. | Bitcoin can overwhelm a portfolio’s hedge during a forced sale. |
| Sanctions exposure | IMF research associates sanctions risk with higher gold shares in central-bank reserves. | No cited source establishes a comparable reserve response or current geopolitical-risk statistic. | Neither asset is automatically beyond legal, custody or market-access controls. |
| Liquidity and custody | Market liquidity varies by form, location, purity, dealer and storage arrangement. | Trading is generally continuous on digital-asset venues, but access depends on a functioning wallet, keys, platform and payment route. | Assess the exact product and custody chain, not only the underlying asset. |
| Macro sensitivity | Longer-term effects depend on inflation, interest rates, the dollar and event persistence. | Price can be strongly affected by liquidity, risk appetite and speculative positioning. | Hedge performance depends on the surrounding macro regime. |
Which is better in a war or sanctions crisis?
There is no universal answer because “war or sanctions crisis” contains several different risks.
Sudden military escalation
Gold has the better documented starting point. The ECB’s high-geopolitical-risk analysis supports gold’s safe-haven role, while the cited Bitcoin evidence does not show a stable response pattern. A sudden escalation can still produce an initial liquidity sell-off in gold, particularly if investors sell what they can to meet margin calls.

Broad financial-market liquidation
Cash, the US dollar and high-quality sovereign bonds may be more useful than either asset for near-term liabilities. The ECB specifically notes that these instruments can outperform gold in traditional financial-stress episodes. Bitcoin’s March 2020 decline demonstrates why a highly volatile asset may fail as immediate insurance when investors need cash.
Long sanctions and reserve fragmentation
Gold has the stronger sovereign evidence. The IMF’s 14 active diversifiers and the increase in China’s official gold share are consistent with governments seeking diversification and protection from sanctions-related concentration risk. That does not make privately held gold frictionless: sanctions, export controls, banking restrictions and local dealer closures can still affect access.
Payment-system disruption
Bitcoin’s digital transferability may be useful in some circumstances, but only when the holder can secure keys, obtain network access, find a willing counterparty and convert or spend the asset. The cited sources do not provide a current, like-for-like test of Bitcoin and gold under communications outages, capital controls or wartime payment restrictions. Avoid treating theoretical portability as demonstrated crisis performance.

Can Bitcoin replace gold as a crisis hedge?
For most investors, the evidence does not support calling Bitcoin a replacement for gold. The assets have different risk engines. Gold is a physical reserve asset with centuries of monetary use and a documented role in central-bank diversification. Bitcoin is a newer, digitally native asset whose market history includes rapid appreciation, deep drawdowns and changing correlations.
The WGC’s hypothetical portfolio illustrations, covering December 31, 2015 through December 31, 2020, show this difference. In a well-diversified US-dollar portfolio, Bitcoin’s gains came from rapid appreciation rather than reduced portfolio volatility. Gold contributed to returns while reducing volatility. These are historical illustrations, not current forecasts or personalized allocation advice, and the portfolio window ended in 2020.
An investor may hold both for different reasons, but “both” is not automatically diversified. If Bitcoin is sized so that a 40% or larger drawdown jeopardizes rent, debt payments or emergency reserves, it is functioning as a speculative risk position, not reliable crisis insurance. Gold also requires a decision about form, storage, insurance, spreads and selling arrangements.

1. Match the hedge to the liability
List the expense the hedge is meant to cover and its timing. An emergency fund due next month needs stable, accessible cash rather than an asset whose price can gap lower. A long-term purchasing-power objective can tolerate more price movement and may justify a diversified mix.
2. Define the shock you fear
- Geopolitical escalation: gold has the stronger historical and institutional evidence.
- Short-term liquidity crisis: cash and high-quality sovereign debt may be more dependable than either gold or Bitcoin, as the ECB notes.
- Long inflationary or currency-debasement risk: consider how each asset responds to inflation, rates and the dollar; the WGC warns these channels shape gold’s longer-term outcome.
- Sanctions and reserve fragmentation: gold has observed central-bank demand linked to sanctions concerns, but personal access depends on jurisdiction and custody.
- Digital portability: Bitcoin may offer a distinct transfer mechanism, but operational and counterparty requirements must be met.
3. Separate the asset from the wrapper
A gold bar in a private vault, a coin held at home, a pooled account and a listed fund involve different ownership, fees, liquidity and legal risks. Likewise, directly controlled Bitcoin, an exchange balance, a fund share and a custodial account are not interchangeable. Evaluate the wrapper’s redemption rights, counterparty, jurisdiction, trading hours, tax treatment and failure procedures.

Use the March 2020 Bitcoin example as a stress input: a fall of more than 40% peak to trough and a 25% monthly loss occurred in that episode. Do not assume a future decline will be smaller merely because the purpose is hedging. For gold, stress-test a temporary decline as well; safe-haven status does not prevent losses when investors raise cash.

5. Plan custody before buying
For physical gold, determine authentication, storage, insurance, access during emergencies, delivery time and the buy-back spread. For Bitcoin, determine key backup, inheritance, device security, recovery procedures, platform withdrawal rules and a way to transact if one provider is unavailable. A hedge that cannot be accessed when needed is not performing its intended job.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling every crisis the same
Gold’s strong record in geopolitical-risk episodes does not mean it will beat sovereign bonds in every financial panic. Bitcoin’s behavior in March 2020 does not determine its response to every future conflict. Label the shock first, then select the relevant evidence.
Turning an association into a forecast
The WGC’s 2.5% estimate is a short-term association for a 100-point increase in its index. It is not a guaranteed move, and longer-term effects depend on event persistence, inflation, interest rates and the dollar. The IMF’s sanctions findings are associations in central-bank reserve data, not a promise for a retail holding.

China’s move from less than 2% of foreign-exchange reserves in gold in 2015 to 4.3% in 2023 describes official reserve composition. It does not show what private investors earned or how Bitcoin performed for Chinese households.
Using historical portfolio illustrations as forecasts
The WGC portfolio analysis ended December 31, 2020 and was hypothetical. It cannot establish current expected returns, volatility or a suitable allocation for a particular person.
Ignoring access and legal risk
Gold can be subject to transport, storage, title, insurance and jurisdictional restrictions. Bitcoin can be subject to exchange outages, key loss, network or internet dependence, banking access and legal restrictions. Neither is immune from the practical consequences of a sanctions regime or emergency controls.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say in 2026
The ECB’s May 2025 review provides the most direct official statement supporting gold’s safe-haven role during high geopolitical risk, with observations through March 2025. The WGC’s December 2025 commentary extends an event-response chart through January 6, 2026 and supplies the 2.5% short-term association, but it is an industry analysis and carries its own methodological qualifications. The WGC’s Bitcoin comparison relies on the March 2020 episode and a portfolio exercise ending in 2020.
No cited statistical publication establishes Bitcoin’s current price response to geopolitical risk, and no recent matched-period study here compares Bitcoin and gold across geopolitical shocks through October 13, 2026. A responsible conclusion therefore avoids declaring a current numerical winner. Gold’s case rests on longer history, official reserve use and more consistent observations in the cited stress episodes. Bitcoin’s case rests on a distinct digital architecture and occasional hedge-like behavior, offset by substantially higher volatility and less established institutional evidence.
Bottom line for a personal investor
Choose gold when your priority is the most established geopolitical hedge, especially where you value official-reserve precedent and a longer record during elevated geopolitical risk. Treat Bitcoin as a separate, high-volatility risk asset that may diversify some portfolios over a long horizon but should not be assumed to protect capital in the next market panic. Keep near-term obligations in genuinely liquid, lower-volatility assets, and judge any gold or Bitcoin position by its exact custody arrangement, jurisdiction, costs and ability to meet the liability it is supposed to hedge.
