Bitcoin is a proof-of-work digital currency with a protocol-defined eventual cap of 21 million BTC. Ethereum is a proof-of-stake network for smart contracts and decentralized applications; its native asset, ether (ETH), pays fees and supports staking, with no fixed supply cap in the comparison described here. Neither design makes one asset a universal winner: the useful comparison is how each network works, what risks it relies on, and what its supply rules mean.
What is the difference between Bitcoin and Ethereum?
Both use blockchain technology, but their design goals differ. Bitcoin focuses on peer-to-peer value transfer and a scarce-asset narrative. Ethereum is a programmable network where applications can run through smart contracts. Ether is the asset used to pay for transactions and smart-contract activity and to participate in network security.
| Comparison | Bitcoin (BTC) | Ethereum and ether (ETH) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Peer-to-peer digital currency; often described as a scarce store of value | Programmable application and settlement platform; ETH pays fees and supports staking |
| Consensus | Proof-of-work mining | Proof-of-stake validation |
| Supply design | Predetermined issuance with an eventual 21 million BTC limit | No fixed supply cap in the cited comparison; issuance and activity-linked burning both affect net supply |
| Security model | Accumulated proof-of-work and transaction confirmation depth | Staked capital, validator incentives, finality, and slashing |
| Energy trade-off | Ongoing electricity demand from proof-of-work mining | Ethereum.org says energy use fell by more than 99% after the 2022 move to proof of stake |
| Central trade-off | Narrower base-layer function and energy-intensive mining | Greater programmability, alongside protocol complexity and staking-concentration risks |
“Digital gold” and “global settlement layer” are common shorthand descriptions, not guaranteed outcomes or evidence of future value. Both networks can transfer value, and added scaling networks complicate a simple one-role-per-chain comparison. (Ethereum.org’s Bitcoin and Ethereum comparison)
What are Bitcoin and Ethereum used for?
Bitcoin: value transfer and a scarce-asset design
Bitcoin’s base layer is centered on transferring BTC under a comparatively limited scripting model. Some users frame BTC as “digital gold” because its issuance is constrained by protocol rules; that framing describes a use or belief, not a guaranteed store of value or price outcome.

Ethereum: applications that use smart contracts
Ethereum was designed to run on-chain programs, or smart contracts. Applications include lending, trading, games, and digital collectibles. ETH is used to pay network fees and interact with those contracts. Ethereum’s broader functionality also means that activity on the network is not limited to simple transfers.
How do their supply rules differ?
Bitcoin has a 21 million eventual limit
Bitcoin’s issuance is predetermined and declines over time under protocol rules. The eventual supply limit is 21 million BTC; it does not mean that all 21 million are already in circulation. (Ethereum.org)

Ethereum has no fixed cap in the cited comparison
ETH is issued to validators in relation to the amount staked and burned in relation to network activity. Its net supply therefore reflects the balance between issuance and burning. No fixed cap does not mean supply must always rise, just as burning does not establish a permanent decline.
EIP-8363, “Tapered Issuance Burn,” is a proposal that would require a hard fork, not an activated change to Ethereum’s supply policy. In its proposal context, it reports that during the year ending July 31, 2026, MEV-Boost relays paid proposers about 72,600 ETH across 2.42 million blocks—an average of 0.030 ETH per block. The proposal also estimates consensus issuance at about 1,054,000 ETH per year at its stated staked base. Those figures describe the proposal’s calculation and assumptions, not guaranteed future issuance, staking yield, or investment returns. (EIP-8363)

How do Bitcoin and Ethereum secure transactions?
Bitcoin: proof of work and growing confirmation depth
Bitcoin miners use computation to produce proof-of-work blocks. Full nodes independently check blocks against Bitcoin’s consensus rules. Rewriting a transaction’s history would require accumulating substantial work, and each additional block built on top increases the work needed to alter that past transaction. Confirmation confidence grows with chain depth, but it is probabilistic rather than an instantaneous guarantee. Six confirmations is a rule of thumb, not a universal settlement time or protection against every threat. (Bitcoin Developer Documentation: Block Chain)
Ethereum: proof of stake, validators, and finality
Ethereum validators stake ETH rather than mining with proof of work. The official comparison describes finality as often occurring around 15 minutes; this is a general description, not a promise that every transaction settles on that exact schedule. Validators that engage in certain dishonest behavior can risk losing stake through slashing. (Ethereum.org; Ethereum.org: proof of stake)

Different risks, not a simple safety ranking
Ethereum’s proof-of-stake model has explicit economic penalties, but it also introduces protocol complexity and the possibility that liquid-staking providers concentrate a large share of stake. Bitcoin’s proof-of-work model depends on mining hardware and pools and uses substantial electricity. These are different security assumptions and attack surfaces; they do not establish that one network is categorically safer. (Ethereum.org: proof-of-stake trade-offs)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which network uses more energy?
Bitcoin continues to use proof-of-work mining, which requires electricity for miners’ computation. Ethereum’s 2022 transition from proof of work to proof of stake reduced its energy consumption by more than 99%, according to Ethereum.org. That comparison describes the effect of the transition; it is not a current annual energy measurement for either network. (Ethereum.org)

Is Bitcoin or Ethereum better for payments?
There is no lasting winner based on a single fee, throughput, or confirmation figure. Fees can change with congestion, and a transaction’s experience may depend on whether it uses a base layer or a scaling network. Ethereum applications may use layer-2 networks; Bitcoin users may use the Lightning Network. The IMF’s September 2025 working paper cautions that some network measurements are not directly comparable because Bitcoin and Ethereum have different use cases, and fees can spike under congestion. (IMF Working Paper WP/25/186)
How to compare the risks as a personal-finance decision
Protocol design is only one part of the risk of holding either asset. The comparison here does not establish a current investment-risk ranking, predict prices, or determine which asset suits a particular financial plan. A practical assessment should distinguish network mechanics from the financial decision to buy, hold, or use BTC or ETH.
- Ask what function matters to you. A peer-to-peer currency with constrained issuance is a different proposition from a network designed for programmable applications.
- Understand the security assumption. Bitcoin relies on accumulated proof of work; Ethereum relies on staked ETH, validator incentives, finality, and penalties.
- Separate protocol supply from market price. Bitcoin’s eventual cap and Ethereum’s issuance-and-burn balance describe supply rules, not future demand or returns.
- Check the transaction route. Base-layer and scaling-network fees, confirmation expectations, and user experience can differ and change over time.
