Bitcoin and BNB Smart Chain use different transaction models and consensus systems. Bitcoin records transfers by spending and creating unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), with miners securing blocks through proof-of-work. BNB Smart Chain is an EVM-compatible smart-contract network that uses Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA), and users pay transaction gas in BNB. Those differences shape how transactions are validated, fees are set, and settlement confidence develops.
First, what does “BNB” mean?
BNB is a token; BNB Smart Chain (BSC) is one network on which it is used. BNB Chain is the broader ecosystem, which also includes opBNB and Greenfield. These names are not interchangeable, and this comparison concerns Bitcoin and BNB Smart Chain—not every BNB Chain network or Binance’s centralized exchange ledger. BNB Chain’s introduction describes the ecosystem and its component networks.
Bitcoin and BNB Smart Chain at a glance
| Feature | Bitcoin | BNB Smart Chain |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction accounting | Transactions spend existing UTXOs and create new outputs. The difference between input and output value can be the fee. | EVM-compatible transactions execute on the chain; they can transfer assets or call smart contracts. |
| Block production and consensus | Miners compete to produce proof-of-work blocks. Nodes follow the valid chain with the greatest accumulated work. | A selected validator set produces blocks under PoSA. BNB Chain documentation describes 45 active validators and a 21-validator consensus group per epoch. |
| Transaction fee | The fee is the value left over when transaction inputs exceed outputs; the miner including the transaction may claim it. | Users pay gas in BNB. The amount depends on the transaction and network conditions. |
| Programmability | Bitcoin uses transaction scripts and a UTXO-oriented payment model. | Supports EVM-compatible smart contracts and protocols. |
| Confirmation and finality | Additional proof-of-work blocks increase confidence, but confirmations do not create an absolute, clock-based guarantee. | Documentation describes fast finality when enough validators vote; without sufficient votes, finality is probabilistic. |
| Fee and speed comparison | No matched, current fee or empirical speed comparison is established here. Neither network can be described as invariably cheaper or faster on this evidence. | |
How Bitcoin transactions work
UTXOs are spent and replaced
Bitcoin does not update a single account balance for each payment. Instead, a transaction references one or more unspent transaction outputs as inputs and creates new outputs. Each output can be spent only once. A valid transaction cannot create more value in its outputs than it consumes in its inputs; any difference may be claimed as a fee by the miner whose block includes it. The Bitcoin Developer Guide explains this transaction structure.
For example, a payment may use an output worth more than the amount sent. The transaction can create an output for the recipient and another returning the remainder to the sender; the input value not assigned to outputs is the fee. The exact structure depends on the available outputs and the transaction.

Miners secure the chain with proof-of-work
Bitcoin miners expend computing work to produce blocks that meet a difficulty target. Nodes check that blocks and transactions are valid and generally follow the valid branch with the greatest accumulated work. If blocks are found at nearly the same time, a temporary fork can occur; later work resolves which branch is followed. Rewriting an older block would require redoing its work and the work of subsequent blocks, as described in the Bitcoin Developer Guide’s blockchain section.
The system’s foundational design is also set out in the Bitcoin white paper, published on 2008-10-31. Its explanation of transaction fees likewise treats them as the difference between input and output value.

How BNB Smart Chain transactions work
Gas is paid in BNB
BNB Smart Chain supports EVM-compatible contracts and protocols. A user may make a straightforward asset transfer or submit a transaction that calls a contract; not every transaction is a complex contract interaction. The chain’s developer quick guide says, “BNB is the native utility token of BNB Smart Chain and is used to pay transaction fees.” Those fees are measured as gas and paid in BNB, rather than being calculated as the leftover value between transaction inputs and outputs as on Bitcoin. See the BNB Smart Chain Quick Guide and BNB Smart Chain introduction.
PoSA uses a selected validator set
BNB Chain documentation describes BSC’s consensus as Proof of Staked Authority. Its validator overview says the 45 active validators comprise 21 “Cabinets” and 24 “Candidates”; for each epoch, 18 Cabinets and 3 Candidates form the 21-validator consensus group. The documentation also describes slashing for certain failures or malicious behavior. These figures and roles describe the documented protocol and could change with updates. Details appear in the BSC Validator Overview.

How fees differ—and why “which is cheaper?” needs a live comparison
Bitcoin’s fee is the difference between the value of a transaction’s inputs and outputs. Users can make that difference larger to offer a stronger incentive for a miner to include the transaction; actual fee conditions vary. On BNB Smart Chain, the transaction uses gas and pays fees in BNB. The eventual charge depends on the transaction and network conditions.
These are different fee mechanisms, but the mechanism alone does not establish which network costs less for a particular use. A fair price comparison would need to match transaction types and use contemporaneous network data. Without that, a blanket claim that Bitcoin or BNB Smart Chain is always cheaper is not supported.

Block time is not the same as settlement finality
Bitcoin confirmations build confidence over time
A Bitcoin confirmation means a transaction has been included in a block. As more blocks build on that block, the chain has accumulated more work, increasing confidence that the transaction will remain in the accepted history. Because competing branches can occur and nodes follow the valid branch with the most work, a confirmation count is not an absolute guarantee. How much confirmation depth is appropriate depends on the transaction’s value and the recipient’s risk tolerance; there is no universal count that guarantees settlement.
BNB Smart Chain documents conditional fast finality
BNB Chain’s BSC introduction describes a 0.45-second mainnet block time following named hardforks and says fast finality can occur within two blocks—described on that page as approximately 1.125 seconds—when at least two-thirds of validators vote normally. If votes are insufficient, the documentation describes a fallback to probabilistic finality, with additional confirmations increasing safety. These are protocol descriptions, not a promise that every transaction will settle within a fixed time; implementation details can change. The figures and voting condition are described in the BNB Smart Chain introduction.

What the design differences mean for users
- For ordinary transfers: Bitcoin’s UTXO model determines how inputs and outputs are assembled; BNB Smart Chain charges gas in BNB for transactions on an EVM-compatible network.
- For applications: BNB Smart Chain’s EVM compatibility supports smart contracts and protocols. Bitcoin’s cited transaction guide focuses on UTXO payments and script rules; that distinction does not mean Bitcoin has no scripting.
- For security assumptions: Bitcoin relies on proof-of-work and the chain with the greatest accumulated work. BNB Smart Chain’s documented design relies on a smaller, selected validator structure based on staking rankings and governance, with slashing described for certain conduct. These mechanisms show different approaches to block production; they do not, by themselves, establish a complete quantitative ranking of decentralization.
- For timing: A stated block interval is not a settlement promise. Bitcoin confidence grows with subsequent work; BNB Smart Chain’s documented fast-finality path depends on validator votes and has a probabilistic fallback.
