Bitcoin’s sharp price swings usually come from several forces interacting: demand can change faster than supply, broader financial shocks can shift investors’ appetite for risk, and leverage can turn a decline into forced selling. Derivatives and fund flows may add pressure in some circumstances, but no single factor explains every move.
Why Bitcoin can move sharply
Bitcoin’s supply responds slowly to sudden changes in demand. When many buyers or sellers act at once, the available supply may not adjust quickly enough to absorb the shift, so the price can move substantially. CME Group describes Bitcoin supply as highly inelastic and explains that inelastic supply can contribute to volatility. Its discussion of a feedback relationship between price and mining difficulty is a structural explanation, not a way to predict the direction of a particular day’s price: CME Group’s Bitcoin economics report.

Inelastic supply does not mean the amount of Bitcoin is literally fixed at every moment. It means that supply does not quickly expand or contract in response to a sudden change in demand. If demand shifts while the quantity available to trade adjusts slowly, price may have to move more to bring buyers and sellers into balance. That mechanism can work in either direction: a surge in demand can accompany a sharp rise, while a fast increase in selling pressure can accompany a steep fall.

The report’s reference to mining difficulty is best understood as part of the longer-run relationship between Bitcoin’s price and its network economics. It does not show that mining difficulty directly sets a particular day’s price or tell readers which way the market will move. It helps explain why Bitcoin’s supply structure can be relevant to volatility, not why any one event happened.

The market’s structure is only part of the explanation. A change in investor risk appetite, a crowded trade, or forced liquidations can arrive at the same time. Their effects can reinforce one another: a demand shock moves prices, falling prices put leveraged positions under pressure, and resulting sales can push prices further.
How liquidations can amplify a decline
Leverage lets a trader control a position larger than the collateral they have committed. It magnifies potential gains, but it also leaves less room for an adverse price move. If collateral falls below a platform’s maintenance requirement, the platform may close the position automatically. When many leveraged traders face that outcome together, their forced sales can add supply to a falling market and trigger further liquidations.
This is a feedback mechanism, not a claim that every price decline leads to a liquidation cascade. The initial move can put some positions under pressure; the size and direction of the resulting market impact depend on the positions and liquidations involved. But when forced selling occurs during an already falling market, it can add pressure rather than wait for sellers to choose when to exit. A cascade can therefore make a move sharper than the initial change in sentiment or demand alone.

A more recent, episode-specific example appears in the BIS’s March 2026 Quarterly Review. It reported that Bitcoin had fallen about 50% from its 2025 highs during a period that included declines in technology stocks, and said liquidations of leveraged long crypto positions probably exacerbated the move: BIS Quarterly Review, March 2026. This describes one episode, not a universal explanation for Bitcoin declines. The wording matters: the BIS identified liquidations as a likely amplifier of that move, not necessarily its sole cause.

How wider markets can affect Bitcoin
Bitcoin-specific news is not the only possible source of volatility. When investors become less willing to hold risky assets, movements in broader financial markets can coincide with changes in crypto prices. IMF analysis found that spillovers between crypto and equity markets increased during periods of heightened financial-market volatility and sharp Bitcoin price swings: IMF research on crypto-price spillovers.
An IMF study reported a Bitcoin-stock correlation of 0.36 for 2020–21. That is a historical result for that period, not a current correlation or proof that Bitcoin always tracks stocks: IMF analysis of crypto and financial stability, 2022. Correlations can vary across time and market conditions, so a past relationship does not establish what Bitcoin will do during the next stock-market move.

If stocks and Bitcoin fall together, that is context worth considering, but it is not proof that one market caused the other to fall. The IMF’s separate finding that spillovers increased in turbulent periods supports looking at wider-market conditions as one possible channel, while keeping the explanation specific to the episode and evidence at hand.
What futures and funds can add to price swings
Futures carry and positioning
Futures prices can differ from spot prices, and the gap can change sharply. A 2023 BIS working paper reports crypto futures carry of up to 60% annualized. It links volatile carry to trend-chasing, smaller investors seeking leveraged upside exposure, and limited arbitrage capital willing to take the other side. The paper also discusses leverage, margin spikes, and liquidation risk as factors that can help explain severe crashes: BIS working paper on crypto carry.
The 60% figure is the paper’s reported maximum, not a typical or current rate. Carry can help describe market positioning; it does not by itself predict when a Bitcoin price move will happen or how large it will be.

The mechanism described in the paper is that high or volatile carry can coexist with investors chasing a trend and seeking leveraged exposure, while limited arbitrage capital is available to offset that positioning. If market conditions turn, leverage and margin requirements can make positions more vulnerable to forced closure. This connects futures-market pricing to liquidation risk, but it does not make carry a stand-alone signal of an impending crash. A historical maximum should not be read as a real-time measurement.

A futures-based fund may affect the underlying market when its footprint is large relative to that market. In a historical analysis of the first U.S. Bitcoin futures ETF, BIS explained this possible channel but judged that BITO was unlikely to cause such disruption at the time because it was small relative to the market for its cash-equivalent holdings: BIS analysis of the first U.S. Bitcoin futures ETF. That was a time-specific assessment of one fund, not a current judgment about all Bitcoin funds.
The distinction is between a potential market channel and a conclusion about its actual scale. A fund’s influence depends on how large its footprint is in the relevant market; the cited BIS analysis did not say that all futures-based funds necessarily destabilize Bitcoin. Its observation about BITO applies to the fund and market conditions at the time of that analysis.
How to tell what a volatility figure means
A volatility number is useful only when you know what it measures. Two commonly distinguished concepts are:
- Implied volatility is derived from options prices and reflects the market’s expectation of future volatility over a specified period. It is not a guarantee of what will happen.
- Realized volatility describes price movement that has already occurred over a specified historical period.
CME CF’s Bitcoin Volatility Index (BVX) and Bitcoin Volatility Index Short-Term (BVXS) use Bitcoin and Micro Bitcoin options order-book data to measure expected 30-day implied volatility. CME CF describes BVX as a real-time benchmark and BVXS as a daily settlement benchmark: CME CF’s BVX and BVXS methodology.

These indices use options-market data to express an expectation over a defined horizon. That makes them different from simply calculating how much Bitcoin’s price moved in the past. An implied reading can change as options prices change; it is still a market-derived expectation, not a promise that future movement will match the figure.
When comparing volatility readings, check the time horizon, whether the measure is implied or realized, and which market and instruments supply the data. A 30-day options-based expectation and a measure of past price changes are not interchangeable. Even two measures with the same label may not be directly comparable if their horizons or underlying data differ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to interpret a sharp move
No single explanation should be assumed from the size of a move alone. To think through a sudden Bitcoin swing, separate the possible mechanisms:
- Start with the demand and supply imbalance. Ask whether buying or selling pressure may have changed faster than the available market supply could absorb. Slow supply adjustment can magnify a demand shift, but does not reveal what caused the shift.
- Consider broader risk appetite. Check whether the move occurred amid stress or repricing in wider markets. A contemporaneous equity-market move can be relevant context, but it does not establish that Bitcoin simply followed stocks.
- Look for leverage and liquidation pressure. Forced position closures can add selling to a decline or buying to a rise. They are a possible amplifier, rather than proof that the entire move was caused by liquidations.
- Read derivatives evidence with its limits. Futures carry and fund activity can illuminate positioning and market mechanics. A historical carry maximum or an older assessment of one fund should not be treated as a present-day market reading.
- Check the definition of any volatility statistic. Identify its horizon, whether it is implied or realized, and the instruments used to calculate it before comparing it with another figure.
These checks help separate a description from a causal claim. For example, a volatility index may show that options prices imply substantial expected movement over 30 days, but it does not explain what news, position changes, or market conditions produced that expectation. Likewise, a sharp fall occurring alongside falling technology stocks is a useful observation, but the relationship and the role of liquidations need to be assessed rather than assumed.
What volatility explanations can—and cannot—tell you
These mechanisms explain why Bitcoin can move sharply and how one force can reinforce another; they do not provide a reliable short-term forecast. Inelastic supply does not determine price direction, correlation figures from 2020–21 do not describe today’s relationship with stocks, and a volatility index records options-market expectations rather than certainties. Treat explanations of a particular episode as evidence about that episode, not as a rule for the next one.

The evidence also has different time scopes. The 0.36 correlation belongs to 2020–21; the 60% annualized carry is a maximum reported in a 2023 working paper; the BITO assessment was made in a historical analysis; and the March 2026 BIS example concerns a particular decline from Bitcoin’s 2025 highs. Keeping those dates attached to the findings prevents them from being mistaken for current readings or timeless rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Bitcoin so volatile?
Bitcoin’s supply adjusts slowly to sudden demand changes, so a shift in buying or selling pressure can move prices substantially. Broader changes in risk appetite and leveraged liquidations can add to the move, and derivatives or fund activity may matter in some circumstances. No single factor explains every episode.
Do stocks determine what Bitcoin does?
No. IMF research found increased crypto-equity spillovers during turbulent periods and reported a Bitcoin-stock correlation of 0.36 for 2020–21, but that figure is historical and does not show that Bitcoin always tracks stocks or establish the cause of a particular move.
How can leverage make a Bitcoin decline worse?
A falling price can reduce the collateral supporting leveraged positions. If collateral falls below a platform’s requirement, positions may be closed automatically; those forced sales can add pressure to the decline and trigger further liquidations. They are a possible amplifier, not necessarily the sole cause.
What is the difference between implied and realized Bitcoin volatility?
Implied volatility is derived from options prices and reflects market expectations for a specified future period. Realized volatility describes price movement over a past period. Because they measure different things, compare their time horizons and data sources rather than treating their values as interchangeable.
Does a futures carry figure of 60% mean Bitcoin is about to crash?
No. A BIS working paper reported crypto futures carry of up to 60% annualized and connected volatile carry with trend-chasing, leveraged upside exposure, and limited arbitrage capital. The figure is a reported maximum, not a current or typical rate, and carry alone does not predict the timing or size of a price move.
The Bottom Line
Bitcoin’s sharp swings are best understood as interacting forces: slow-moving supply meets shifting demand, wider-market risk appetite can change, and leverage can turn price declines into forced selling. Derivatives and funds may contribute under some conditions, but historical statistics and a single explanation are not reliable forecasts.
