A Bitcoin transaction with zero confirmations has not yet been included in a block; it may still be waiting in nodes’ mempools. Look up its transaction ID (txid), check its status in your wallet or a block explorer, and compare its fee rate with current conditions. If it remains unconfirmed, your wallet may offer a fee bump—but whether that works depends on the transaction and network policy. No confirmation-time estimate is a guarantee.
How to check a Bitcoin transaction’s confirmations
- Find the txid. Open the wallet that sent or received the payment and locate the transaction details. Copy the transaction ID, not just the wallet’s generic “pending” label.
- Check the network. Make sure you are looking at Bitcoin mainnet if that is where the payment was sent.
- Look up the txid. Check it in the wallet or paste it into a block explorer. A block explorer offers another view, but it is not a definitive view of every node on the network.
- Read the status. An unconfirmed transaction has no block inclusion yet. If it has a block height or confirmation count, it has been included in a block.
If the wallet and explorer disagree, they may be observing different nodes or data sources. One node’s mempool is not a complete, synchronized list of every transaction known across the network, so a transaction missing from one view is not proof that it is absent everywhere.
What do zero, one, and more confirmations mean?
- Zero confirmations: The transaction has been broadcast but is not yet included in a block. It is not final, and a recipient should assess the risk of accepting an unconfirmed payment. See the Bitcoin Developer Guide to payment processing.
- One confirmation: The transaction is included in a mined block.
- Additional confirmations: Each subsequent block built on the block containing the transaction adds another confirmation.
More confirmations mean more blocks have been built on top of the transaction’s block; a count does not promise that a future payment can never be reversed or guarantee a particular recipient’s acceptance policy.
Why is a Bitcoin transaction taking so long?
Fees compete for limited block space
Transactions compete for finite space in blocks. A transaction’s fee rate—the fee relative to its virtual size, commonly shown in sat/vB—is more useful for comparing inclusion incentives than the total fee alone. A fee rate that is low compared with current demand can mean a longer wait. That does not establish that a transaction is permanently stuck, and no precise confirmation time can be promised from the fee rate alone.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Mempools are local, not one global queue
A mempool is a node’s waiting area for transactions it has accepted but that have not appeared in a block. Nodes may differ in which unconfirmed transactions they have and in their relay and acceptance policies. Bitcoin Core’s getmempoolinfo RPC reports information about the queried node’s local mempool, not a network-wide queue.
Fee estimates can change
Bitcoin Core’s estimatesmartfee RPC estimates a fee rate intended to begin confirmation within a requested number of blocks, if possible. It is an estimate, not a deadline or promise; estimates may be unavailable or stale as demand changes. The Bitcoin Developer Guide to transactions explains the relationship between transaction fees and block space. Check a current fee estimate when making a decision rather than relying on an old quoted fee.

Should you wait or try to raise the fee?
If the payment is not urgent, waiting may be reasonable. If it is still unconfirmed and delay matters, check whether the sending wallet supports a fee bump for this transaction. The choice depends on the wallet’s support, whether the transaction and node policy make replacement possible, the added fee and resulting recipient amount, and how urgent the payment is.
| Option | When it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wait | The payment is not urgent and you prefer not to pay an additional fee. | The transaction’s status in your wallet and, if useful, another network view. A wait time cannot be predicted precisely. |
| Use the wallet’s fee-bump feature | The transaction remains unconfirmed, delay matters, and the wallet offers a supported replacement method. | Whether replacement is supported and accepted, the new total fee, and the amount the recipient will receive. |
What RBF does—and does not—promise
Opt-in Replace-by-Fee (RBF) allows a transaction to be flagged as replaceable until it is confirmed in a block, according to the Bitcoin Core RBF FAQ. A replacement offers a higher fee, but signaling and mempool policy conditions apply; replacement does not guarantee inclusion in a particular block. See BIP 125 and Bitcoin Core’s mempool replacement policy. The Bitcoin Developer Documentation describes wallet fee bumping in its bumpfee RPC reference.

Before approving a replacement, verify the recipient and change details, and inspect the new fee and recipient amount in the wallet. A recipient may choose to wait for confirmation before treating a replaceable transaction as payment.

What not to do with an unconfirmed transaction
- Do not share recovery words or keys. Never enter a seed phrase, private key, or wallet recovery words into a website or support chat to check a transaction.
- Do not assume manual rebroadcast will speed it up. Bitcoin Core’s sendrawtransaction RPC warns that unconditional rebroadcast to peers may degrade privacy by revealing the transaction’s origin. Follow your wallet’s documented controls instead.
- Do not treat an accelerator claim as a guarantee. A service cannot promise that miners will include a transaction in a specific block.
- Do not choose a fee from an unrelated old quote. The appropriate fee depends on current conditions and the transaction; estimates are not guarantees.
