Unleveraged Bitcoin spot trading means buying or selling the asset itself; perpetual futures provide price exposure through a derivative that may be leveraged and can be held long or short. Spot and perpetuals have different costs and risks: compare trading fees plus any funding or borrowing charges, and check the exact contract and margin rules for your venue and region before deciding.
How spot trading and perpetual futures differ
In a spot trade, you buy or sell Bitcoin in the spot market. A fully paid spot purchase does not borrow money to enlarge your exposure. A perpetual futures trade is a contract whose value tracks Bitcoin under the venue’s terms; you do not buy the coin through that contract. A basic spot purchase benefits from a rise in Bitcoin’s value, while shorting spot generally requires borrowing Bitcoin or using another instrument.
| Feature | Unleveraged spot | Perpetual futures |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | The underlying Bitcoin asset | A derivative contract; settlement currency and contract details depend on the venue |
| Long or short | A purchase gives exposure to a rise; shorting generally requires borrowing or another instrument | Long and short positions are available under the contract’s rules |
| Ongoing cost beyond trading fees | None for a fully paid spot holding; spot margin may add borrowing or rollover charges | Funding payments may be paid or received while the position is open |
| Liquidation | No futures-style liquidation for a fully paid, unleveraged asset; spot margin can be liquidated | Possible if the position or account no longer meets the venue’s margin requirements |
| Expiry | The asset has no futures expiry | A true perpetual has no ordinary expiry, but similarly named products may have one |
These are general distinctions, not guarantees that every venue’s products work identically. Spot margin is still a spot-market transaction, but it uses borrowed funds and therefore adds borrowing and liquidation mechanics.
How to compare fees and funding
Start with entry and exit fees
Check the current fee schedule for the specific venue, account tier, and order type you expect to use. Include both opening and closing trades. A displayed maker or taker rate alone does not tell you the full cost of holding a position.

- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Add the costs of keeping the position open
Perpetual futures can involve periodic funding payments. Funding is variable, can flow in either direction, and may change during your holding period. Binance explains that funding is intended to help align a perpetual contract with its index: when the rate is positive, longs pay shorts; when it is negative, shorts pay longs. Binance also notes that funding deductions can affect position margin and liquidation price. The rate, formula, and interval are venue-specific; see Binance’s explanation of perpetual contracts.
If you trade spot on margin, include borrowing or rollover charges as well as ordinary spot trading fees. Kraken’s margin documentation says its usual trade fee applies to opening and closing spot-margin volume in addition to its listed margin fees. That is Kraken-specific, not a universal schedule.

To compare two approaches, estimate entry and exit fees and the expected holding period, then include likely funding for a perpetual or borrowing costs for margin spot. Because funding can change and the final cost depends on venue, tier, order type, position management, and time held, neither instrument is universally cheaper.
How leverage changes the risk
Leverage means taking exposure larger than the collateral committed to the position. In its futures guidance, Coinbase describes leverage as the contract’s notional value divided by its initial margin requirement. That definition is useful for understanding the relationship, but the venue sets its own margin calculation and rules. See Coinbase’s futures leverage and margin guidance.

Leverage magnifies gains and losses relative to posted collateral, and reduces the room a position has to withstand an adverse move. A venue’s maximum advertised leverage is not a recommendation or a measure of what is prudent for a particular position. Margin tiers, position size, collateral, and contract rules all matter.
Why a position can be liquidated
For a leveraged position, liquidation can occur when the margin available under the venue’s rules is no longer sufficient to support it. The relevant threshold is tied to maintenance margin, but there is no single liquidation-price formula or threshold that applies across venues and contracts.

Price movement is not the only possible factor. Mark-price rules, funding deductions, changes in collateral, and changes in margin rates can affect a position’s risk. Kraken cautions that spot-margin risk depends on the open position size relative to collateral, not just the leverage setting. Coinbase’s margin guidance also describes an example where a margin-rate transition moves an account into liquidation risk without a price move.
Before opening a position, check the contract’s current mark-price definition, maintenance-margin schedule, collateral treatment, funding rules, and liquidation fees. Those terms are needed to estimate a specific position’s exposure; a simple rule of thumb cannot reliably prevent liquidation.

Check whether a “perpetual-style” contract really has no expiry
“Perpetual” ordinarily refers to a futures contract without a normal expiry or settlement date. Binance states that its perpetual contracts have no expiration or settlement. The funding mechanism helps keep the contract aligned with its reference price without relying on ordinary expiry settlement.
Product names are not enough to establish the time structure. Coinbase’s US overview describes “perpetual-style futures” with a five-year term: it states that current contracts expire on December 20, 2030, and use hourly funding. Treat this as a product- and jurisdiction-specific example, not a universal feature; check the specification for the exact instrument you are considering. The Coinbase overview refers to US derivatives products and does not establish eligibility or legal availability elsewhere.
A practical comparison for your intended trade
- If you want to own Bitcoin: compare spot purchase fees and consider custody and platform risks. A fully paid spot asset does not face futures-style margin liquidation, though its market value can fall.
- If you need short exposure or leveraged exposure: a perpetual may offer those mechanics, but evaluate the contract’s margin requirements and funding as part of the position—not as incidental details.
- If considering spot margin: treat borrowing and liquidation rules as additional costs and risks, even though the transaction remains in the spot market.
- If comparing venues: verify the current fee schedule, funding formula and interval, margin tiers, liquidation rules, product expiry, and regional eligibility on the venue’s official materials. Rules and availability can vary and change.
This comparison explains instrument mechanics, not which trade is suitable for you. Your result depends on the exact product, venue, jurisdiction, position size, order type, and holding period.
