Separately, CryptoQuant contributor Amr Taha reported that short-term holders sent 55,600 BTC to exchanges at a loss on Thursday. The figures describe different activity: forced closures of leveraged positions and reported exchange transfers. A transfer does not establish that the Bitcoin was sold.
What the October 9 report measured
Cointelegraph’s October 9, 2026 report attributed its liquidation figures to CoinGlass. It said total crypto liquidations reached $1.09 billion during the 24 hours ending at 10:00 UTC Friday. The report said $1.05 billion of Thursday’s liquidations were long positions—trades that stood to gain if prices rose. These are figures for that reported window, not live market totals.

The same report described a separate on-chain measure: CryptoQuant contributor Amr Taha said short-term holders sent 55,600 BTC to exchanges at a loss on Thursday. Cointelegraph defined short-term holders as entities that had held Bitcoin for up to six months without selling. A transfer was counted as being at a loss when the coins arrived at an exchange at a lower price than their previous transaction.

Liquidations and exchange transfers are not the same signal
| Measure | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Crypto liquidations | Leveraged positions forcibly closed in crypto markets; Cointelegraph attributed the reported totals to CoinGlass. | They do not measure the number of BTC transferred by spot holders. |
| Short-term-holder exchange transfers | Bitcoin attributed to short-term holders arriving at exchanges at a lower price than its prior transaction; the 55,600 BTC figure was attributed to Amr Taha by Cointelegraph. | An exchange deposit is not proof that every coin was sold, or that selling happened immediately. |
The figures should not be added together or treated as interchangeable measures of selling. Cointelegraph’s report and KuCoin’s republication both caution that transferred coins may not all have been sold. The reported flow alone therefore does not prove completed sales or predict Bitcoin’s next move.

Bitcoin’s reported low and recovery
Cointelegraph reported that Bitcoin touched $80,350 on Bitstamp, its lowest price since September 18, and later recovered to around $82,500 on Friday. Those are historical prices from the October 9 report, not current quotes.
What the $82,500 level meant to one analyst
Cointelegraph quoted trader and analyst Rekt Capital describing a conditional technical scenario: “Bitcoin is currently failing its retest of ~$82500. Weekly Close below $82500 and turn it into resistance however and Bitcoin will be back in its Macro Accumulation Range.” The quoted view hinged on a weekly close below that area and a subsequent shift to resistance; it was not confirmation that support had failed or a forecast of what price would do next.

How to read the reported loss transfer
A loss-measured arrival at an exchange indicates that the coins’ prior transaction price was higher than their price on arrival, under the report’s definition. It can be consistent with holders preparing to sell, but the transfer itself does not reveal whether, when or how much was sold. Cointelegraph also reported Taha’s comparison that Bitcoin was trading above $81,000, versus $59,300 in June, a price difference exceeding 36%. That comparison was Taha’s reported context, not evidence that the exchange transfers guaranteed capitulation or recovery.
Cointelegraph said loss-driven selling can coincide with capitulation and possible recovery conditions. That is a conditional interpretation, not a reliable standalone trading signal: the liquidation total, transfer figure and observed price path measure different things, and none alone determines what happens next.

Sources and scope
The figures and price description above come from Cointelegraph’s October 9, 2026 report, which attributed the liquidation data to CoinGlass and the transfer figure to CryptoQuant contributor Amr Taha. KuCoin republished the story and likewise noted that an exchange transfer does not guarantee an immediate sale; that republication is not independent confirmation of the underlying datasets. The figures are reported attributions, not independently verified original datasets. Cointelegraph described its report as informational, not investment advice.
