Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies fell on October 7, 2026, as rising oil prices and Treasury yields revived concerns about inflation and interest rates. Reuters reports also pointed to renewed worries about Middle East energy and shipping disruptions. Those macroeconomic pressures may have made investors less willing to hold volatile assets, while forced selling by leveraged traders may have intensified the decline. These are reported drivers and market interpretations, not a precise accounting of what caused each price move.
What happened to Bitcoin and crypto on October 7?
A Reuters report carried by Investing.com described Bitcoin trading around $84,289 early on October 7, 2026, as oil prices and Treasury yields rose. That is a time-stamped observation from the report, not a current quote. The same coverage said other crypto assets also declined, indicating that the move was broader than Bitcoin alone.
A second Reuters report carried by Investing.com connected the selloff with renewed Iranian attacks and concerns about their potential effect on Strait of Hormuz shipping. It reported Brent crude above $102 per barrel and described concern that oil-driven inflation could feed into higher government bond yields and interest-rate expectations. The reports also noted that crypto had lagged record-setting Wall Street trading while AI stocks drew investor attention.
What may have driven the decline?
| Factor | How it could matter to crypto | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Oil prices and geopolitical supply concerns | Disruptions to energy supply or shipping can push oil prices higher. If investors expect that to sustain inflation, they may anticipate interest rates staying higher for longer and become more cautious about volatile assets. | Reuters coverage on October 7, 2026, reported rising oil prices, renewed Iran-related shipping concerns and rate fears. It does not quantify how much each factor moved Bitcoin. |
| Treasury yields and interest-rate expectations | Higher yields and the prospect of tighter financial conditions can weigh on appetite for riskier investments, including crypto. | Reuters coverage reported rising yields and inflation concerns as part of the day’s market backdrop; it does not establish a direct, fixed relationship between yields and Bitcoin’s price. |
| Investor attention and risk appetite | When investors favor other assets, demand for crypto may weaken. This is a market context, not proof that money moved directly from Bitcoin into a particular stock or sector. | The October 7 Reuters coverage noted strong equity-market performance and attention on AI stocks while crypto lagged. |
| Leveraged positions and forced selling | When a leveraged long position loses value, an exchange may close it if the trader’s collateral falls below required levels. Those closures can add sell orders to a falling market. | The Bitcoin Foundation’s October 7, 2026, article cited third-party liquidation data. Those totals are estimates, not audited market-wide figures. |
The most defensible explanation is a combination: a risk-off macroeconomic backdrop may have pressured crypto, while market positioning may have amplified the move. The available reporting does not isolate the effect of any one headline or factor.

How leveraged liquidations can accelerate a drop
Leverage lets a trader control a position larger than their own unborrowed capital by borrowing funds or using margin. If a long position moves against the trader, losses reduce the equity supporting it. When collateral falls below an exchange’s requirements, the exchange may automatically close the position. Closing a long position involves selling, which can deepen a decline if many positions are closed in a short period.
The Bitcoin Foundation’s October 7 article described large crypto long liquidations using third-party data and explained this margin mechanism. Treat reported liquidation totals as estimates: they can vary by data provider and should not be read as a definitive measure of every exchange’s activity.

A historical example shows why leverage and market plumbing matter without proving they drove this particular selloff. In its 2026 risk report, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) discussed the October 10, 2025, crash and described automated liquidations, high leverage, thin liquidity, fragile pricing and exchange performance problems as interacting vulnerabilities. ESMA cited an estimated $19 billion in automated derivatives liquidations that day, noting the figure was based on market estimates and could be an underestimate. It also cited other analysts’ estimates of $30–40 billion; that larger range was not ESMA’s own measured figure. The report said Bitcoin and Ether fell more than 12% and 15%, respectively, within hours on October 10, 2025.

Bitcoin was already in a larger correction before the October 7 move. A Bitwise Bitcoin ETF Trust Form 10-Q filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in 2026 described Bitcoin falling from approximately $126,000 in October 2025 to below $60,000 in June 2026—a drawdown of more than 50%.

The same filing characterized 2026’s second quarter as the period with the largest quarterly net outflows from U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products since their January 2024 launch, attributing that characterization to market sources. Those facts describe the preceding market backdrop; they do not show that ETF outflows caused the October 7 intraday decline.

What the reports do—and do not—show
- They show a reported market backdrop: rising oil prices and Treasury yields, inflation and rate concerns, and a broad decline across crypto assets on October 7, 2026.
- They offer plausible transmission channels: energy-supply concerns can affect inflation and rate expectations, while changing risk appetite can weigh on volatile assets. The reports do not prove a direct mechanical link from a geopolitical event to Bitcoin’s price.
- They identify a possible amplifier: leveraged long liquidations can add forced selling, but the cited liquidation figures are estimates.
- They do not establish a bottom, recovery path or reliable support level. The historical correction and 2025 liquidation episode provide context, not a forecast for what happens next.
