The famous Bitcoin pizza purchase happened on 22 May 2010—not 2009. Laszlo Hanyecz exchanged 10,000 BTC for two Papa John’s pizzas, worth about $41 at the time. Their eye-catching billion-dollar value is a later calculation based on Bitcoin’s market price, not the pizzas’ original cost.
What happened in the Bitcoin pizza transaction?
On 22 May 2010, software developer Laszlo Hanyecz offered 10,000 bitcoins for two large pizzas. Guinness World Records identifies the purchase as the first commercial Bitcoin transaction. The Associated Press reports that the pizzas were from Papa John’s and were delivered to Hanyecz’s home in Florida. Guinness World Records and the Associated Press document the transaction.
The year in the original headline is incorrect: the purchase took place in 2010. Bitcoin Pizza Day is marked on 22 May to remember the transaction.
How much were the bitcoins worth at the time?
The Associated Press estimated that the 10,000 BTC were worth about $41 when Hanyecz made the exchange. That is the approximate value of the bitcoins then, not a separately stated cash price for the pizzas.

How much would 10,000 Bitcoin be worth today?
There is no fixed answer: the calculation changes whenever Bitcoin’s market price changes. At CoinMarketCap’s indicative price of about $83,400, retrieved on 8 October 2026, 10,000 BTC would be about $834 million (10,000 × $83,400). This is a volatile spot-price illustration, not a guaranteed sale value or a daily closing price. CoinMarketCap’s Bitcoin page provides its market-price data.
For a dated closing-price comparison, Investing.com listed Bitcoin’s 7 October 2026 close at $83,232.6. Multiplying that close by 10,000 gives about $832 million. Investing.com’s historical data uses a different price reference from a live spot quote, so the two calculations need not match.

Why do headlines put the pizzas at more than $1 billion?
The number refers to what 10,000 BTC could be worth at a later Bitcoin price, not what Hanyecz spent in dollars in 2010. The AP reported that the coins were worth about $1.1 billion on 22 May 2025, when Bitcoin reached a record. CoinMarketCap lists a $126,198.07 all-time high dated 6 October 2025; at that price, 10,000 BTC would calculate to about $1.262 billion. That is a price-based comparison, not a claim that Hanyecz received or could have sold the coins at that exact amount. The quoted figure varies with source and date. The AP’s 2025 account and CoinMarketCap’s Bitcoin data provide the respective context.

There is no basis for treating the transaction as a wager on a future billion-dollar price. The AP quoted Hanyecz reflecting, “I don’t think anyone could have known it would take off like this.” The remark is his later reflection as reported by the AP, not a prediction from the original 2010 post.
