But the ETF-flow figures often paired with that decline refer to different dates and measurement windows: U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $89.9 million in net outflows on October 5, while a separate September 25 report said their year-to-date net flows had turned positive. Those facts are not contradictory, and the available reports do not establish that ETF inflows caused—or coincided with—the price drop.
What happened as Bitcoin approached $84,000?
The Crypto Times reported Bitcoin at $84,164.72 on October 7, 2026, down 1.0% over the preceding 24 hours. The outlet attributed the price data to CoinGecko and reported a session high of $86,648.14 and low of $83,647.88. These are reported observations from that article, not a live quote.
CoinGlass data cited in the same report showed $142.87 million in Bitcoin liquidations over 24 hours. That figure is Bitcoin-only; liquidations across the entire crypto market totaled $546.89 million.
Long positions made up most Bitcoin liquidations
Of the reported Bitcoin liquidations, $129.07 million were long positions and $13.80 million were short positions. A liquidation occurs when an exchange forcibly closes a leveraged position because its collateral no longer covers losses. The split indicates that most of the reported forced closures were positions betting on a Bitcoin price increase.

- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Liquidations can intensify a price move as leveraged positions are closed, but these figures alone do not identify what initially caused Bitcoin to fall.
Why positive ETF flows can coexist with outflows
“ETF flows” can describe a single day’s net subscriptions and redemptions, a streak of daily flows, or a cumulative balance over a longer period. Those measures can point in different directions at the same time because they cover different dates and windows.

The October 5 daily flow was negative
The Crypto Times reported, citing SoSoValue, that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs had $89.9 million in net outflows on October 5, 2026. The report also said the funds had recorded about $293 million in combined inflows across the preceding two trading sessions. It cited $2.18 billion in total ETF trading volume and $57.7 billion in cumulative net inflows since launch. These figures refer to distinct measures and should not be treated as the same flow statistic.
The September 25 year-to-date balance had turned positive
CoinDesk reported on September 25, 2026, that U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs had nearly $800 million in net inflows year to date. That followed a reported year-to-date low of $5.8 billion in net outflows on July 13. CoinDesk also reported about $4 billion in inflows since August and a six-day inflow streak totaling $2.84 billion as of its September 25 article. The year-to-date balance was still well below the net inflows reported for 2024 and 2025.

A positive year-to-date total does not mean every day had inflows. Nor does a positive cumulative balance prevent Bitcoin’s market price from falling: ETF flows are one measure of demand for a particular set of investment products, while Bitcoin’s price reflects trading across markets and influences beyond the figures reported here.

The headline’s combination of a Bitcoin price near $84,000, roughly $143 million in liquidations, and positive ETF flows does not describe one confirmed, same-day event in the available reporting. The October 7 account paired the price and liquidation figures with October 5 ETF outflows. The positive year-to-date ETF balance came from CoinDesk’s September 25 report.

A separate Web3 Week Asia analysis of the September 21 rally described Bitcoin briefly trading above $87,000. It cited $746.6 million in total crypto liquidations, including $647.9 million in short liquidations, and $433 million in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF inflows on September 18. That outlet characterized the rally as substantially supported by a short squeeze; that is its analysis of a separate episode, not evidence explaining the October 7 decline.

How to read the figures without conflating them
- Check the flow window: distinguish a daily ETF figure from a multi-session streak or year-to-date total.
- Check the liquidation scope: the $142.87 million figure was for Bitcoin; $546.89 million covered the broader crypto market.
- Check which positions were closed: Bitcoin long liquidations substantially exceeded short liquidations in the October 7 report.
- Do not infer causation from timing alone: the reported flow and liquidation figures do not establish why the price moved.
