Bitcoin remains a high-risk investment even if you plan to hold it for years. For U.S. federal taxes, selling or exchanging Bitcoin can create a reportable gain or loss, and accurate records matter. Long-term storage is a separate decision: you can manage the private keys yourself or rely on a custodian, but each approach shifts the risks and responsibilities.

How risky is Bitcoin for a long-term investor?

Bitcoin is speculative and highly volatile, according to the SEC. Its price can fall sharply, and a long holding period does not guarantee recovery or a positive return. No strategy—whether holding through declines, buying gradually, or diversifying—guarantees protection from loss.

The SEC’s March 23, 2023 investor alert puts the risk plainly: “The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely.” The alert is staff guidance, not a rule or legal obligation. Read the SEC’s investor alert on crypto asset securities.

Bitcoin exposure through an exchange-traded product (ETP) can avoid personally managing wallet keys, but it is not the same as owning Bitcoin directly and does not remove Bitcoin’s price risk. ETPs have product-specific risks that investors should weigh alongside their potential benefits. The SEC’s ETP bulletin discusses those considerations.

When can Bitcoin transactions create U.S. federal taxes?

The IRS treats digital assets as property for U.S. federal income-tax purposes. When you sell Bitcoin for U.S. dollars, you generally calculate a capital gain or loss by subtracting your adjusted basis from the amount realized, subject to applicable rules and limitations. Exchanging Bitcoin for other property—including another materially different digital asset—can also create a gain or loss. These are U.S. federal tax rules, not universal rules; other countries may treat transactions differently.

Short-term and long-term holding periods

For federal tax purposes, the IRS describes a sale or exchange after a holding period of one year or less as short-term; a holding period of more than one year is long-term. The classification describes the holding period, not whether a transaction is taxable or whether it will produce a gain.

Wallet transfers and transaction fees

A transfer between wallets you own is generally different from a sale or exchange, but the details of the transaction matter; not every wallet movement is taxable. Bitcoin used to pay for transaction services can itself be treated as disposed of, potentially producing a gain or loss. Keep records that show what happened rather than assuming every transfer has the same tax result. The IRS’s digital asset transaction FAQs include guidance on reporting and records.

What records should you keep, and where do transactions go on a U.S. return?

Keep enough documentation to support the positions on your tax return. The IRS identifies records such as receipts, sales, exchanges, dispositions or transfers, and fair market value information. In practice, preserve transaction dates, amounts, the asset involved, and records that help establish basis and proceeds.

For individual federal reporting, the IRS says to report sales and other capital transactions on Form 8949 unless a broker has provided Form 1099-DA with gross proceeds and basis information. Capital gains and deductible capital losses are summarized on Form 1040, Schedule D. Taxable transactions must be reported whether or not you receive an information return.

Form 1099-DA: check the tax year

Broker reporting requirements change across tax years. Under the IRS’s 2026 Form 1099-DA instructions, for sales effected after 2025, brokers must report gross proceeds for digital assets; basis reporting is mandatory for covered securities and voluntary for noncovered securities. For 2025 sales, the IRS’s 2025 instructions said brokers were not required to report basis. These are reporting requirements for brokers, not a reason to omit a taxable transaction from your return. Check the current instructions for the tax year you are filing: IRS Instructions for Form 1099-DA (2026).

What are the options for long-term Bitcoin storage?

A wallet does not literally hold Bitcoin. It manages the private keys used to access and authorize transactions. The central choice is whether you control those keys yourself or have a third party control them for you.

Consideration Self-custody Third-party custody
Who controls the keys? You control the private keys and recovery information. The custodian controls access to the private keys.
Main responsibility Protect the keys and any seed or recovery phrase; plan how to recover access. Assess how the provider safeguards and holds assets and keys, including any subcontracting.
Key risks Lost or exposed secrets can mean permanent loss or theft; a physical device can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Provider failure, access restrictions, and the scope and exclusions of any insurance require scrutiny.
Convenience and cost Choose an approach suited to how often you transact; account for device and transaction or transfer fees. Review access arrangements and fees; terms vary by provider.

The SEC’s Dec. 12, 2025 custody bulletin describes the trade-offs between custody approaches and questions to ask before choosing one.

Hot wallets and cold storage

A hot wallet is connected to the internet, which can make transactions convenient while increasing exposure to cyberthreats. A cold wallet is typically a physical device kept offline and is generally less exposed to cyberthreats, but it can be lost, damaged, or stolen—with possible permanent loss of access.

A Bitcoin-compatible hardware wallet is one way to use cold storage. The device does not, by itself, protect against loss of the recovery phrase, phishing, user error, or physical theft. Consider transaction frequency, ease of use, physical security, and whether you can reliably protect both the device and recovery information.

Questions to ask before choosing a custodian

  • How are the assets and private keys safeguarded, and where are they held?
  • Does the provider use subcontractors, and what roles do they have?
  • What happens to access and assets if the provider fails?
  • What does any insurance actually cover, and what are its exclusions?
  • What fees apply, and what access or transaction limits are in the terms?

Do not assume Bitcoin held with a provider is FDIC- or SIPC-insured. A provider’s statement that it has insurance is not a guarantee that your assets or losses are covered; check the policy’s scope and exclusions.

How can you make a storage decision?

  1. Set your transaction needs. Consider how often you expect to send or receive Bitcoin and how much convenience you need.
  2. Choose who will control the keys. Self-custody makes you responsible for key security and recovery; third-party custody makes the provider’s practices and failure arrangements central.
  3. Plan recovery before moving funds. For self-custody, decide how to protect the recovery phrase without sharing it. The SEC advises keeping seed phrases secure and not sharing them.
  4. Account for all exposure and costs. Weigh online threats, physical loss or theft, transfer and transaction fees, device costs, provider fees, and the practical steps required to regain access.
  5. Review the arrangement as your needs change. A setup that suits frequent transactions may not suit long-term holding, and a custodian’s terms or your ability to protect keys may change.

The SEC’s older 2014 Bitcoin and virtual currency investment alert discusses enduring risks such as theft, fraud, limited recovery, exchange failure, and the absence of bank-deposit or securities-account protections for Bitcoin held in a wallet or exchange. It is a historical risk overview, not a source for current market-price data.
