Bitcoin Forks Explained: Soft Forks, Hard Forks, and Chain Splits

A Bitcoin fork may mean a software project, a consensus-rule change, or a chain split. Learn how to tell soft forks, hard forks, and accidental splits apart.

A Bitcoin “fork” can mean a change to consensus rules, a split into incompatible transaction histories, or simply a separate project based on Bitcoin software. The distinctions matter: soft forks can preserve compatibility for older software, hard forks are not backward-compatible, and a software bug or version mismatch can split nodes unexpectedly.

What does “Bitcoin fork” mean?

The word fork is used for several different things. In a technical discussion, identify which one is meant before drawing conclusions about what happened to Bitcoin or its users.

  • Software fork: A separate software project derived from or based on Bitcoin software. This does not, by itself, mean the Bitcoin blockchain split.
  • Consensus-rule change: A change to the rules nodes use to decide whether blocks and transaction histories are valid.
  • Chain split: A divergence in which different groups of nodes accept different histories. It can be temporary or persist if the groups continue following incompatible rules.
  • Accidental consensus fork: A divergence caused, for example, when different software versions validate the same block differently.

These meanings are related but not interchangeable. A software project can fork without producing a chain split, and a chain split can occur because of a bug or version disagreement rather than a planned protocol upgrade.

What is the difference between a soft fork and a hard fork?

The key distinction is how the change alters block validity under the old and new rules. Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) 123 describes consensus rules as the basis for locally evaluating valid state and history; the definitions below follow Bitcoin Core’s explanation and the BIP material.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Type Effect on validity Compatibility and coordination
Soft fork Some blocks or transactions that were valid under the old rules become invalid under the new rules. Structures already invalid under the old rules remain invalid. Older software may continue operating because the new rules narrow what counts as valid, but it may not validate all of the new rule data. Participants still need coordination around activation and enforcement.
Hard fork Some blocks or transactions rejected under the old rules may be valid under the new rules. It breaks compatibility with previous software. Nodes that do not upgrade can reject blocks accepted by upgraded nodes, so coordination by the required deadline is important.

Bitcoin Core’s 2016 explanation says soft forks can allow old and new software to coexist, whereas hard forks break compatibility and require coordination. “Coexist” does not mean that older software fully understands or checks every new rule.

Can a Bitcoin fork split the blockchain?

Yes. If nodes apply different validity rules to the same block, they can accept different histories. Miners may then build on different branches, and services may have to respond to uncertainty about which history will prevail. Some disagreements resolve when participants converge on a common valid chain; others can persist if incompatible rules remain in use.

The March 2013 accidental split

BIP 50’s post-mortem reports that Bitcoin 0.8 processed a block with more transaction inputs than had previously been seen, while some pre-0.8 nodes rejected it. The Bitcoin 0.8 chain had around 60% of mining hash power during the incident, according to that 2013 report, so the older chain did not immediately overtake it by total work.

The post-mortem says mining pools BTCGuild and Slush downgraded their nodes, moving majority hash power to the chain without the larger block. Bitcoin 0.8 nodes eventually reorganized to that chain. The report also records at least one large double spend, characterizing the person responsible as experimenting rather than intending to steal. Exchanges and BitPay quickly suspended deposits or payments during the incident. These are reported effects of that specific historical event, not a description of every fork.

What happens to old nodes after a soft fork?

Older nodes can sometimes keep operating after a soft fork because the upgrade makes the valid set of blocks more restrictive. But continued operation is not the same as full validation: old software may not check the new rule data and can therefore have a different view of what it has independently verified.

Segregated Witness (SegWit) is a concrete example. BIP 141 specifies SegWit as a soft fork and describes witness data committed separately from the transaction Merkle tree, with scripts and signatures moved into that structure. The proposal says this design mitigates involuntary transaction malleability and enables transaction constructions useful for off-chain protocols. BIP 141 also explains that older software can continue operating after activation without validating witness data. Those design effects are claims in the proposal, not a guarantee that every user or application experiences them in the same way.

How did SegWit activation proposals differ?

SegWit’s soft-fork design and the proposals for activating it are separate questions. BIP 91, BIP 148, and BIP 149 described different activation mechanisms; they should not be treated as one plan.

Proposal Activation approach What the specification says
BIP 91 Miner-activated Specified reduced-threshold miner-activated SegWit activation.
BIP 148 User-activated, flag-day style Specified that blocks signal for SegWit during its activation window if SegWit had not already locked in or activated. Its page gives the window as August 1 to November 15, 2017.
BIP 149 Separate user-activated deployment using versionbits Specified guaranteed lock-in on timeout if its conditions were met. Its page currently displays the proposal as closed.

These labels describe what an activation proposal asks miners or users to do; they do not settle who controls Bitcoin generally. A BIP page documents a proposal and its displayed status. Bitcoin.org’s BIP mirror says inclusion there does not itself imply adoption, community consensus, or endorsement.

Who decides which Bitcoin rules apply?

Bitcoin Core’s 2016 statement says: “At the end of the day, the Bitcoin Core development team does not decide the Bitcoin consensus rules.” The statement explains the project’s position that users choose which software they run. A software release or written proposal is therefore not, by itself, proof that every node or participant has adopted a rule change.

For readers assessing a particular “fork,” the useful questions are what validity rule changed, which software enforces it, how activation is defined, and whether nodes accepted incompatible histories. Those details distinguish a planned upgrade from a software-derived project or an accidental split.
