A spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) is generally the simpler route if you want bitcoin price exposure through a brokerage account and do not need to control or transfer bitcoin yourself. Buying bitcoin directly is the route to consider if you want the bitcoin itself and are prepared to manage custody—or choose and rely on a custody provider. Neither route removes bitcoin’s volatility, and their costs and risks are different.
What you own in each route
A spot bitcoin ETP share
A U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETP share is a security traded on an exchange through a brokerage. The trust holds bitcoin, but a shareholder owns an interest in the trust—not bitcoin held under the shareholder’s personal private keys. The bitcoin represented by each share can decline over time as the trust sells assets to pay fees and expenses.

“Bitcoin ETF” is familiar shorthand, but many U.S. spot bitcoin products are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940. They still have securities-law registration and disclosure obligations and trade on registered national securities exchanges; the distinction matters because they do not receive certain protections expressly provided by the 1940 Act.

With a direct purchase, you own bitcoin. You can arrange for a provider to hold it for you (hosted custody), or use a wallet in which you control the private keys (self-custody). Depending on the provider and setup, direct ownership may allow you to transfer bitcoin on the network. A purchase on a platform does not by itself establish that you can withdraw bitcoin, so check the platform’s withdrawal terms before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
How the costs compare
There is no standardized total-cost comparison that establishes which route is cheaper for every investor. Compare the costs that apply to your specific fund, brokerage, purchase method, custody arrangement, and intended transfers—not just a fund’s stated fee.
| Cost to check | Spot bitcoin ETP | Bitcoin bought directly |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing product or custody charge | The fund’s management fee and any waiver; expenses can reduce the bitcoin represented by each share. | Any charge for hosted custody, or the cost of arranging and maintaining self-custody. No standardized comparable amount is established. |
| Buying and selling | Brokerage commission, if any, plus the bid-ask spread and any difference between the share price and net asset value (NAV). | Platform purchase or sale fees, if any, plus the quoted spread. Terms differ by provider. |
| Moving assets | Ordinary shareholders trade shares; fund-level creation and redemption arrangements do not give them direct possession of the trust’s bitcoin. | Check any withdrawal, network transaction, or transfer charge and whether the service permits withdrawals. |
For one dated example—not an industry average or an all-in investor cost—Grayscale reported a 0.15% management fee for the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF (ticker BTC) as of March 31, 2026. Fees and waivers can change; check the current prospectus and fee schedule, as well as your brokerage’s trading charges, before investing.

Access, trading, and the ability to use bitcoin
Brokerage access through an ETP
The SEC approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares on January 10, 2024. An investor with an eligible brokerage account can trade the shares on an exchange during that exchange’s trading sessions. This can fit an investor who wants exposure within a securities account and does not need to move bitcoin. Exchange hours also mean the share market is not continuously open in the way some crypto platforms may be; confirm the hours and order options that apply to your account.
On July 29, 2025, the SEC permitted in-kind creations and redemptions by authorized participants for covered crypto ETP shares, changing how those market participants can move assets into or out of the products. It did not give ordinary shareholders the right to redeem shares for personal possession of the fund’s bitcoin. SEC Chair Paul S. Atkins said investors “will benefit from these approvals, as they will make these products less costly and more efficient.” That statement described the SEC’s rationale; it is not evidence that every investor will realize savings.

Platform or wallet access for direct bitcoin
Direct buyers use a crypto platform, a wallet, or both. A platform may make buying and selling convenient, but its custody and withdrawal rules govern what you can do with bitcoin held there. With self-custody, you control the keys and can initiate transfers, but you also take responsibility for protecting them and handling recovery information. A hardware wallet is one optional self-custody tool, not a guarantee against loss, theft, or mistakes.
Risks to weigh before choosing
Both choices expose you to bitcoin’s price volatility. Bitcoin is speculative, and its value can fall sharply. In its January 10, 2024 statement, SEC Chair Gary Gensler said: “While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin.” The SEC’s approval of particular listings should not be read as an endorsement of bitcoin, a fund, its custody arrangements, a crypto platform, or an investment decision.

| Risk | Spot bitcoin ETP | Bitcoin bought directly |
|---|---|---|
| Custody and service providers | The trust depends on its bitcoin custodian and other service providers. A security incident or operational problem can affect assets or interrupt operations. | With hosted custody, you rely on the provider and platform. With self-custody, key theft, loss, or mishandled recovery information can mean losing access; recourse after theft or misconduct may be limited. |
| Price measurement and trading | The product’s index or reference price may not track global bitcoin prices exactly. Shares can trade above or below NAV, particularly if the creation-and-redemption process or arbitrage is impaired; liquidity also matters. | Prices and execution depend on the platform or trading venue used. Direct transactions bring their own platform and transfer risks. |
| Market and regulatory conditions | SEC-filed fund risk disclosures describe risks in bitcoin markets and trading venues, including fraud, theft, manipulation, security failures, and regulatory uncertainty. | Direct holders are exposed to the same volatile, uncertain bitcoin market, along with the risks of the platform or custody arrangement they choose. |
The 1940 Act distinction is specific: spot bitcoin ETPs are not registered as investment companies under that law and therefore lack certain protections it expressly provides. It does not mean they have no securities-law disclosure obligations or exchange regulation.

Taxes and account treatment
Tax results depend on current law and the facts of the investment: the fund’s structure, account type, transaction, holding period, and taxpayer circumstances can all matter. There is no basis here for a blanket conclusion that direct bitcoin or an ETP is always more tax-efficient. For reporting obligations and current digital-asset guidance, consult the IRS’s current instructions; ask a qualified tax professional about your situation.

Which route fits your priorities?
- Consider an ETP if brokerage-based securities trading is important and you want price exposure without personally managing bitcoin keys. Review its prospectus, fee schedule, trading liquidity, reference index, custody disclosures, and share-price behavior relative to NAV.
- Consider direct ownership if you want to hold or transfer bitcoin itself and are willing to assess the custody method, platform withdrawal rules, transaction charges, and security responsibilities.
- Before either purchase, decide how much volatility you can tolerate, check the full costs for the specific route you plan to use, and understand what happens if a service provider fails or you lose access.
