Bitcoin.de publishes different fees for different trading routes, while some competitors build costs into a quoted price. To compare them fairly, check the price for the same asset and euro amount at the same time, then factor in funding, withdrawal charges, available coins, and who controls the private keys. The figures below reflect provider information and a study available as of October 9, 2026; check current terms before trading.
How Bitcoin.de’s fees compare with other pricing models
Bitcoin.de does not have one fee that applies to every transaction. Its published fee information lists separate charges for Express, SEPA, and crypto-to-crypto marketplace trading. Its English purchase FAQ describes a different transaction context, so its 0.5% figure should not be substituted for the marketplace schedule.

These published charges are not directly interchangeable. An explicit percentage fee may sit alongside a spread or other costs, while a broker-style quote may include its markup in the execution price. Compare the confirmation screen for the same asset, euro amount, order type, and time rather than comparing a chart price with a fee schedule.
What observed trading costs show—and what they do not
A TUM-hosted project study reported mean round-trip costs that differed substantially across its sample. A round trip is a buy followed by a sell; these are study observations, not provider fees or predictions of what any customer will pay today.

The small sample limits what those figures can establish. The study had only two observations per asset for BISON, Kraken, Bitpanda, and Coinbase, and it describes those per-asset results as illustrative rather than statistically reliable. It also included only two exchange-model platforms, so it cannot establish a general cost ranking between exchange-model and broker-style services. Treat the results as a snapshot of the study’s transactions, not a current league table.
How to make a like-for-like fee comparison
Before deciding between Bitcoin.de and another service, compare the full path of a trade—not just the advertised percentage.

- Choose one asset and one amount. Compare the same asset pair, such as BTC/EUR, and the same euro order size on every platform.
- Use the same timing and order type. Prices and spreads move. Compare quotes at roughly the same time and distinguish a market order from a limit order.
- Record the execution price and explicit charge. Include any stated fee or markup, and note whether it is added separately or built into the quote.
- Add funding costs. Check the deposit method you will actually use and whether it carries a charge or changes the available price or processing route.
- Check the withdrawal path. Confirm that the asset can be sent to an external wallet, identify the supported network, and record the displayed withdrawal charge. Bitcoin.de says its withdrawal charges depend on current network fees and can change.
- Compare custody arrangements. Establish whether the provider holds the asset for you or the service is a marketplace connecting buyers and sellers, and whether you control the private keys while funds remain on-platform.
The result is a more useful comparison than a headline “trading fee”: it reflects the price you can actually execute, the way you fund the purchase, and what it costs and takes to move the asset afterward.
Coin selection: verify the exact asset and product
A reliable, current, Germany-specific, like-for-like coin list was not established for Bitcoin.de, Bitpanda, Coinbase, Kraken, Bitvavo, and BISON. Their advertised asset counts may cover different jurisdictions or product types, so they do not support a defensible claim here about which has the broadest selection.

Check each provider’s live Germany-facing asset list for the specific coin you want. Confirm that it is available for spot purchase and that you can withdraw the underlying asset: an asset listed in an app may instead be a derivative, tokenized product, or another exposure that does not give you a transferable coin. If you plan to move it off-platform, verify the supported withdrawal network as well as the asset name.

Bitcoin.de’s marketplace structure
Bitcoin.de product information describes users buying and selling bitcoin from and to other users and identifies Bitcoin Deutschland AG as an intermediary for FIDOR in the arrangement it describes. That helps explain the marketplace model, but it does not establish every current custody, legal, or withdrawal detail. Check the current terms for the particular transaction and asset.

What a regulated custodian does—and does not—mean
Coinbase Germany’s legal disclosures identify Coinbase Germany GmbH as a crypto custodian supervised by BaFin. The same disclosures say crypto custody is not covered by German deposit-guarantee or investor-compensation schemes. They separately describe euro balances as e-money issued by Coinbase Ireland and say those balances are not covered by an Irish deposit-protection or investor-compensation scheme. Supervision, custody, insurance, and deposit protection are distinct; regulatory supervision alone does not promise reimbursement if an asset is lost.

When crypto remains with a platform, the platform’s custody arrangement applies; self-custody instead means the holder controls the private keys. A Germany-focused secondary comparison reports external-address withdrawals for Kraken, Bitpanda, Coinbase, Bitvavo, and BISON, with charges varying by coin and network. Treat that as a starting point, not confirmation of current availability: check the provider’s current withdrawal page for the exact asset, network, limits, and fee before buying.

A hardware wallet is one way to hold keys yourself, particularly for someone planning to keep a larger balance off-platform. It shifts responsibility to the holder: losing access or sending funds incorrectly can cause losses, and a device does not eliminate those risks.
Which comparison matters most for your use
- For occasional euro purchases: compare the final buy quote for your usual amount, the deposit method you intend to use, and the cost of withdrawing the coin.
- For frequent trading: check the applicable route-specific fee, order-book or quoted execution price, order types, and whether any API terms matter to your use.
- For buying and holding Bitcoin: look beyond the initial purchase charge. Confirm whether you can withdraw BTC on a supported network and decide whether platform custody or self-custody fits your needs.
- For buying less common assets: verify the Germany-facing spot listing and external withdrawal support for that exact asset instead of relying on a platform-wide coin count.
