The firm says that would represent a 15% annualized return from an approximately $88,000 Bitcoin price on December 31, 2025. The figure is a conditional scenario—not a guarantee, a probability-weighted forecast or a prediction of Bitcoin’s actual future price.
What VanEck’s $2.9 million scenario assumes
VanEck’s base case depends on Bitcoin becoming widely used in the global financial system. Its January 2026 summary assumes Bitcoin is used to settle 5–10% of global trade and reaches 2.5% of central-bank balance sheets. Those are assumptions about adoption decades from now, not current measures of Bitcoin’s use or ownership.

The scenario appears in VanEck’s January 8, 2026 capital-market assumptions article, authored by Matthew Sigel, the firm’s Head of Digital Assets Research, and Patrick Bush, a Senior Investment Analyst in Digital Assets. Its 15% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is tied to a reference price of about $88,000 on December 31, 2025. That date matters: the $88,000 figure is the model’s starting point, not a statement of Bitcoin’s current price.

These are scenario outputs, not three outcomes with stated odds: VanEck does not assign probabilities to them in the cited summary. The spread illustrates how strongly the result depends on assumptions about Bitcoin’s eventual role. The table reports a price, CAGR and share of world financial assets for each case; it does not establish that any case will occur.
What the earlier valuation model explains
A July 2024 VanEck explanation describes the model’s broad mechanics as a velocity-of-money calculation. In simplified terms, it relates the economic activity settled using Bitcoin to the amount of Bitcoin actively circulating and how quickly that supply changes hands. The firm’s thesis was that Bitcoin could function as an international medium of exchange and reserve asset, while emerging Bitcoin Layer 2 networks might help address scalability barriers. These are VanEck’s arguments about possible future adoption, not verified outcomes.

The 2024 version’s base assumptions included 10% of international trade and 5% of domestic trade settled in Bitcoin, central banks holding 2.5% of assets in Bitcoin, 85% of Bitcoin effectively removed from circulating supply, and Bitcoin velocity of about 1.5. These figures belong to that earlier model explanation. The 2026 article’s visible summary does not restate all of them as updated inputs, so they should not be treated as confirmed components of the 2026 base case. VanEck’s July 24, 2024 valuation article provides that earlier context.
What the scenario does—and does not—tell investors
The $2.9 million figure is useful as a way to understand the scale of adoption VanEck’s base case requires. It is not enough, by itself, to establish that Bitcoin is fairly valued today or that the assumptions will be met. The cited 2026 summary supplies selected adoption assumptions and scenario results, but not a complete calculation that an outside reader can independently reproduce. It also does not show probabilities for the bear, base or bull outcomes.

VanEck explicitly limits how its analysis should be read. The article says: “The information, valuation scenarios, and price targets in this blog are not intended as financial advice or any call to action, a recommendation to buy or sell, or as a projection of how bitcoin will perform in the future.” It also discloses that VanEck may hold positions in the digital assets discussed. Its 2024 explanation likewise cautions that actual future performance is unknown and may differ significantly from illustrative scenarios.
For a personal-finance decision, the scenario is therefore context about one firm’s long-range thesis, not a basis for assuming a particular return. A 15% CAGR sustained over decades would require the adoption conditions behind the base case to materialize, while the table itself shows that VanEck’s modeled outcomes vary substantially.
